ILX’s Top 77 Television and Streaming Video Series of 2020

2020 saw the continuing balkanization of content, consolidation of big media and the inevitable dominance of streaming services. Apple and Disney settled in for the long haul, HBO begat HBO Now begat HBO Max, NBC put out Peacock without much in the way of new programming (but at least it plays on your Roku), Quibi came and went before anyone noticed, it became increasingly presumed that anyone you knew likely had Hulu and Netflix and Amazon and if not, why not? Niche watchers of all tastes can now easily stream treasure troves of classic movies (Criterion), sports (ESPN +), children’s programming (PBS Kids), UK TV (Acorn and BritBox), anime (Crunchyroll and Funimation), horror (Shudder and ScreamBox), arthouse (Mubi), retro (Night Flight), science (CuriosityStream), musicals (BroadwayHD), Chinese and Korean shows (Viki) and Bollywood (Eros Now) for monthly fees that run less than the price of a pack of cigarettes. If you can’t afford that, the internet provides YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, Kanopy, Crackle, Tubi, VPN and infinite sweet sweet t0rr3ntz.

There came a point for me (and likely you too) last year where I stopped wanting to have the same conversation with the same group of friends and strangers over and over again. With nothing to say, nothing to report, nothing happening, any news could only be bad news and if I don’t even have bad news to share what is there to talk about? Well, we could always talk about television. And that’s what a lot of us did when the water cooler disappeared: we watched television and then demanded our friends catch up so that we could talk about television with us. Garbage watching became a universal experience and it wasn’t unlikely that your mom might be watching P-Valley, a soap opera about strippers, or that your shrink would understand your Carol Baskin analogy. If you demand more complex programming, you’re always only two clicks away from thousands of hours of Peabody award winning fare. Now more than ever, curatorial guidance makes all the difference.

Much as with the ILM's Top 77 Tracks of 2020 and ILM's Top 77 Albums of 2020 polls, the ethos of our ILX TV and Streaming poll isn’t geared toward arbitrary ranking; the difference between #72 and #41 is only one first place vote. Instead, we hope this may be a thread that you bookmark as a watching wishlist for your year ahead, a one-stop shop for recommendations to explore worlds you might not otherwise risk the time investment without.

For reference, here’s last year’s thread:
Top 77 Television and Streaming Video Series of 2019

In 2020, we received 49 ballots, all ranked, ranging from at least one single show voter to several who nominated the maximum of 25 different programs. 165 total programs received at least one vote and there was a 5-way tie for #77, making the winners the effective top 50% of our collective viewing. Serendipitously, everyone's #1 vote made the countdown. Any series released anywhere in the world that includes more than three episodes that premiered in 2020 qualified for voting. Acceptable nominations included YouTube or Twitch streamers with a recognizable episode-to-episode continuity whether fictional or presentational, web series, streaming series, cable series, game shows, news shows, animation and talk shows. Unacceptable nominations included unscripted sporting events, concerts, one-episode documentaries, made-for-tv films and concert or music videos.

Nominations took place here:
Nominate the Best TV/Web/Streaming Series of 2020 - Nominations Closing January 7

Shows received 15 points for a #1 or #2 placement in a voter's ballot; 10 points for a #3, #4 or #5 placement; 5 points for #6 to #10; 3 points for #11 to #20 and 1 point for #21 to #25. To more accurately represent viewer enthusiasm, an extra five point bonus was awarded for every total 5 votes tallied for that program (i.e. shows with 5 to 9 votes are awarded an additional five points, shows with 10 to 14 votes are awarded an additional ten points, shows with 15 to 19 votes are awarded an additional 15 points and so on).

Tie-breakers were resolved based on number of votes, number of #1 votes, and the number of votes that placed that show in a ballot's top five, in that order.

Each entry in the poll receives a bespoke graphic, a link to the show's 2020 season trailer, a link to a representative sample clip, a link to where you can stream the show to watch it yourself, an essay or review about the program and maybe some other goodies.

Your poll-runners are myself (research, tabulation, posting) and Moka (images).

For the sake of fast-loading what's likely to be a long thread for folks with less than high-speed connections, I'm asking all posters to refrain from auto-embedding YouTubes and instead provide links to scenes or episodes they want to share when discussing the show. Click "Show Formatting Help" under the Submit Question button if you need a hand with that.

We’ll get started on Monday morning! I’ll let you hold the remote till then.

Reading through last year's results just now made me feel a weird sort of breathtaking dread. It doesn't seem possible that some of those shows that I watched an entire lifetime ago (during the Normal Times) were actually only released in 2019. Really underscores how different my sense of time's passage was pre-pandemic.

Thank you both again for your efforts!

One more brief point before we start that we might as well call “the sic rule.” As your author is American, the listed provenance and linked website for each show is predominantly going to be for its streaming home in the United States, even when the show hails from elsewhere. Readers are strongly encouraged to provide links for their own local streaming options so that everyone can keep up.

this year i went MUCH more out of my way to provide UK and US streaming links when possible but (as many readers here fit neither category and because I wasn't comprehensive) I'd appreciate it if folks could post their methods of acquisition here when asked.

I was initially roped in by "We Are Who We Are"s insouciance, weirdness and joie de vivre but somewhere around the fourth episode it devolved into a vague and personal fantasy of representation and unmoored eroticism. The narrative lines got frayed and the story got muddled and some of the choices felt wrong, both logically and emotionally. The kids remained fun to watch but all the adult storylines and acting got worse and worse, especially kid cudi.

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 8 February 2021 14:23 (three years ago) link

Anyways, for folks that don't know it: We Are Who We Are is the story of a group of teenage kids brought to a US base in Italy by their military families around 2015. It follows the kids attempts to engage their identities: as sexual beings, struggling for gender identification, building political and intellectual personae. Simultaneously, the adults struggle with similar issues, occasionally crossing into the kids' worlds. At heart, it's an unconventional and occasionally very queer young adult soap opera directed by Luca Guadagnino, best known for his Oscar-nominated film Call Me By Your Name, which also features a May/September love affair.

As a former military brat, I was vaguely interested in this show but given that I was basically the only teenager during the stretch when we lived on a military base I'm not sure how acutely it would speak to my experience of reading comic books alone in my bedroom.

it's a very social show, heavy on sex, depression and borderline personalities. it's also - as noted - a bit of a mess.

All of our 77s are tied with a single vote... but every single vote was a #1 vote! So people should definitely defend their choices!

Personally, having seen the entirety of WAWWA (or as it likes to style itself in its own credits, "WRWWR"), I can't really recommend this show to an adult viewer as the plot eventually flies completely off the rails. As prurient and abusive as it is, I think the intended audience is Euphoria teens.

Originally based on a superhero comic series by My Chemical Romance co-founder (and current DC Comics writer/editor) Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Ba, “The Umbrella Academy” is a culty, dark genre dramedy following the misadventures of a large family of supes. It has roots in the slightly off-kilter family dynamics and surreal plots of Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol, which provided the main bones for the television show “Doom Patrol.” Pop will eat itself.

She-Ra originated in the mid-80’s as a fantasy fighting toy line and supporting cartoon series that gender-flipped the phenomenally popular He-Man and the Masters of the Universe line; both series feature prominently in the excellent season 1 documentary episode of Netflix’s Toys That Made Us if you’d like to learn more.

Indie comics creator wunderkind Noelle Stevenson helmed the 2018 reboot of She-Ra as a teen-friendly, non-gender hierarchical and explicitly queer rethinking of the character that’s lasted for five seasons and ended this year.

This was my (admittedly strategic) #1. It’s a difficult and frustrating show to recommend in some ways because it features some of the best writing and acting on television, is deeply emotionally engaging, remarkably uplifting and equally enjoyable watching for a six year old or a sixty year old... but the first two seasons include over a hundred seven-minute episodes about a group of animated dogs that are only available on Disney+. There’s understandably serious barriers to engagement but I promise you they are worth overcoming. If Bluey was on Netflix, I guarantee it would have rated in this year's top ten.

Taskmaster is a panel comedy show hosted by British actor Gregory Davies in which celebrities are tasked with executing unlikely feats of legerdemain as part of a pseudo-reality show. Reggie Watts acted as a host for the single season US adaptation in 2018; 2020 saw its tenth successful season in the UK.

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 8 February 2021 16:48 (three years ago) link

It looks like I'm the Mayor of the Umbrella Academy? I watched both seasons last year, but even if I'd seen the 1st in 2019, I wouldn't have scored it as highly in that year's poll.

It's an adaptation that thrives the further it gets from the source material - everyone in the first season might as well have nametags that say "I dealt with a profoundly unpleasant upbringing by <fucking off to the moon for 4 years / becoming Batman / destroying trust in the life I created / getting fucked up on literally anything to hand / time-travelling past where I had to deal with it / dying horribly / pushing it ALL DOWN INSIDE>" - no-one's entirely shaken that off in the second season, but it begins by throwing them all far away from each other, and seeing what orbits they fall into when they return. When they first all stand in the same room again, one of them asks "I know this is impossible, did we all get sexier?", and they did*, the actors and the writers both seem more comfortable in the roles - plus they all have better hair*

Oh yeah, what's it about? 20ish years ago, 43 children were born on the same day in exceptional circumstances. One man adopted as many as he could get his hands on (7) and raised them as a superhero team. Things went variously off the rails, and the first season starts with them gathering after his death. The second season involves being stranded in different parts of the 60s, assassinations, (unrelated) tragic Swedish assassins, and the threat to the nuclear family. But, mostly, it's about the emotional moire whenever two of the family are trying to come up with the same solution to the same problem.

Though he came to acclaim as the co-creator of the seminal animated shows Dr. Katz and Home Movies, Loren Bouchard’s most undeniably successful work is the cartoon family comedy Bob’s Burgers. In 2020, BB notched its tenth and eleventh seasons and 200th episode.

Famously I loved the last season despite being entirely indifferent to the everything that came before it -- the emotional payoff of my favorite character (also their haircut) turned me around completely on the series.

Bob's Burgers is one of those shows that's never not enjoyable but also never really feels compulsory. My own feeling is that there's a vital spark in Dr. Katz and Home Movies which isn't really there. But maybe it's just that there's a shtick to Bouchard's work that I'm now on my third time seeing. Certainly the performances in BB are great.

Ethan Hawke on reading The Good Lord Bird:

The magic trick that author James McBride does by telling the story through 14-year-old Onion's point of view is he lets you laugh about it. He writes the humanness into it, as opposed to kind of a political angle. It's not self-serious, and yet it's full of tremendous heart. ... McBride finds a way to make it a healing experience to look at systematic racism, the wit of his writing is so compelling. And so when I finished it, I just felt hellbent on a mission that getting this story into our culture so that it's easier to talk about some of these things.

I wanted to see that too and was too slow on the draw--believe it played on Prime before I signed up...I'm catching up compared to five years ago, but wow, most of these shows are obscure to me. I'm think I'm just baby-steps removed from 1995.

clemenza, Monday, 8 February 2021 20:37 (three years ago) link

I had Bob's Burgers pretty high and feel like it's a perfect TV show. it's been on forever and i feel like the quality has held steady; without having to resort to any current affairs or over the top zany new characters or humour that's not suited to the show. i'm kind of amazed they're still doing the same thing and still doing it so well – and as someone who enjoys edgier stuff, I really like their approach to pg-level humour.

xpost - Clem: I'm clearing out a few shows I never got to finish, but maybe we can synchronize our watching in a couple weeks?!

i'm a big roth fan but him doing alternative history did not grab me when i tried the novel ten or so yrs ago, maybe i'd be more into it now; the miniseries felt p tone perfect in establishing that era and the fear and powerlessness of sociopolitical occurrances/movements

I was the one voter for We Are Who We Are, so was glad I submitted a ballot. I liked that it meandered and was open-ended and mostly plotless, it seemed fitting for the two teenage characters it followed, bonding over realizing they were both queer and dealing with the resulting alienation

Dan S, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 02:05 (three years ago) link

I also like that the first character it focuses on, played by Jack Dylan Grazer, is strange and sulky and kind of off-putting, and his counterpoint, Jordan Kristine Seamón is the opposite

Given Followers was my strategic number 1, put in so other people should take notice, I should out myself. This is a really interesting show about women on different stages of the fame/hype cycle and more fundamentally about what it is to be a woman in Japan today. It's a really great piece of social commentary. It's also really beautifully shot, the use of colour is really good with the saturation and intensity rising with the character's fortunes and then washing out as they fall. It makes Tokyo look so good.

xp
the bit where jack slaps his mother around and then kinda fake nurses her was very uh.
and the very corny and tone deaf seduction of kid cudi's wife by the military doctor.
and OF COURSE the extremely wrong attempt by the thirtysomething to initiate a threesome with a fifteen year old.
lots of weird shit in that show. i wish it was attempted with a less gauzy softcore eye... or maybe just not done at all?
Still not sure if many of the choices in that show are camp or self consciously perverse or just utterly tone deaf.

maybe a fair comparison as transparent also lost me at a certain point! I'm big on maintaining a narrative thread, otherwise it's free verse.

braised cod, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 11:38 (three years ago) link

A bit predictable, heavy on network sitcom formula and lacking some of the acid and cleverness that made Always Sunny a must-watch, I found Mythic Quest nonetheless to be a pleasant enough low-commitment binge-watch that offered the promise of a more interesting second season now that all the characters and rulesets are fully defined.

The main arguments for buying into Netflix's hour-long good-family-gone-bad-drama Ozark are a stellar cast and a defined arc that ends in the coming year. The arguments against are its knottiness and bleak worldview.

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 13:27 (three years ago) link

We had terrible trouble trying to get Mythic Quest because the Apple TV kept trying to stream the 4k version, no matter how many times we told it not to do that. Bloody Apple.

only seen the first couple of episodes but ozark has to have the dullest aesthetic of any show i’ve seen. everything is drab muted blues, and that lack of visual spark hurts even more when you compare the show to breaking bad, its obvious inspiration

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 13:55 (three years ago) link

I haven't even sampled Ozark because, yeah, it seems like Breaking Bad Redux minus any sense of fun its antecedent had. Which I don't really need. Am I far off the mark?

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 13:57 (three years ago) link

The criticisms of it being visually uninteresting and wearing its BB influence on its sleeve definitely hold water and the pilot episode is offputtingly rotten, but the story and characters are increasingly compelling as the series progresses (esp Ruth).

The cancellation of High Fidelity after one season caused a fair amount of social media tutting but it was hard not to notice that most of the complaints concerned the quick introduction and removal of a reboot headlined by a woman of color (a valid concern!) and not the lost quality of the program. Historian David Olusoga’s A House Through Time was one of my favorite finds this year and thanks to ILX for sending it my way! Each four-hour season centers around a still-standing British house that was built in the eighteenth or nineteenth century, tracking - as closely as possible - the lives of each of the people who’ve lived there since its founding. It’s a deeply humanistic vehicle for cultural exploration and a great opportunity to take frank looks at issues of fashion, tradition, art, class, race, gender and sex through the centuries. Olusoga is a compelling and erudite narrator who always finds a way to present new perspectives on what would likely otherwise be fusty stories. This season’s house at 10 Guinea Street was paid for and housed slave traders and Olusoga doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to presenting the current owners with the sour news. The upcoming fourth season is one of my most anticipated upcoming 2021 watches.

Had a weird day yesterday so only just catching up but yay for AEW and GeoWizard, which I voted for!

ILX alerted me to AEW's relatively new and surprisingly fresh stories and match-ups. The entire roster and commentary panel is full of everyone you would want to see from the past and present of wrestling - such a talented group.

GeoWizard is the most median representative of Britishness which somehow works as a great palette for these deadpans paeans to beautiful landscapes ('That's lovely that'). His series are so faithful to the trajectory of each journey he takes (you hardly miss a moment with all the timelapse) and it's genuinely thrilling to see how someone copes with often hair-raising obstacles.

Repair Shop my number one, a little tactically. My #2 (which I guess will win) is just better, easily one of the best things I've watched in years; but this been family lockdown viewing since the start of the year, and it's more like a place we hang out to chill at the end of the evening than a tv programme.
That sofa chatter some of the most comfortable memories I'll have when I look back on this strange time - yelling at repairees who aren't grateful enough, me repeatedly saying 'I should learn to solder', marvelling at Steve, wanting to hang with Lucia, shouting 'that's beneath you' when they do an easy fix on something ugly with skill and good grace, just enjoying the weird fakeness of the idyll.
(Also more coldly fascinated by the World War stuff that just keeps coming. The British fixation on it makes more sense to me when people bring in these mementos from their grandparents' wild adventures - life on hell island so dull & dim & unheroic compared to all the shot-down aircraft, shipwrecks etc that randos 80 years ago lived through)

Never Have I Ever was my #1 vote. Idk why Netflix labels it comedy-drama instead of sitcom, since all scenes are played for the lols. Maybe because the writing is excellent and it's smart and poignant throughout?

braised cod, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 19:01 (three years ago) link

there are definite dramatic undertones, what with her dead father and her strained relationship with her mother and best friends. tho i agre, it's no more a drama than scrubs was.

Kipo too low! Was my #6 so almost two top 5 votes.

One of the shows I watch with my 10 year old. Beautifully animated, a joy to watch and hard not to get caught up in Kipo's boundless optimism whilst still going to some dark places this season. Great finale too and deserves to become a modern day classic of animation.

groovypanda OTM, it's a beacon of light and hope. I will say that the animation in the last season was a lot worse than the first season -- I assume the studio had to crunch to finish the series.

Beef House my first vote to place, I think I heard about this on ILX, it aspires to be absolutely nothing other than what it is but it is about as well-made an example of the thing that it is as you can imagine

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 19:36 (three years ago) link

I mean 'note-perfect fake sitcom with bizarre & OTT digressions' is a thing T&E do very well, but they'd already done it several times over before Beef House and it works better in bite-sized chunks IMO (imagine how much impact would be lost if Too Many Cooks had been turned into a series, as a non-T&E example).

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 19:42 (three years ago) link

But yeah, it was funny and fine for what it was but disappointing only inasmuch as it seemed like a step backwards rather than a broadening of the palette.

Fargo S2 > S1 >> S3 >>>>>> S4 (we bailed after 2 episodes)

that's not my post, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 02:02 (three years ago) link

The problem I think with S4 of Fargo is Hawley had been doing Legion for so long it leaked out into the production. There were loads of gloomy dark shots with green tinges, shots down hallways, weird ghosts for no reason, oftn painfully slow pacing.

And Jason Schwartzman I feel was badly miscast.

i goddamn loved the OZ episode of Fargo, and i didn't mind the aesthetics (appreciated the old gangster photos). i thought Schwartzman and the nurse were perfect, but didn't really dig Rock; overall it was decent. made it onto my ballot, but it might be the worsts of the 4 seasons. 2>>>3>>1>4

there are connections between seasons 1 and 2 (and probably 2 & 4, tho i haven't seen 4 so i can't say what those are), but they're not essential to understanding and enjoying s2

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 17:01 (three years ago) link

The connections between the seasons (and the movie itself) are so incredibly tenuous as to be virtually nonexistent imo. It's essentially an anthology series of season-long stories.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 17:12 (three years ago) link

If you're a Coen brothers fan there's often some easter eggs in them which are nice to spot, but you’ll not lose anything by not having that awareness.

I'd rate 2>1>3=4, the Wizard of Oz episode bumped it up for me, absolutely gorgeous black and white cinematography. I wished they'd done the whole series in black and white.

Dan Worsley, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 17:24 (three years ago) link

might even be fun, if you're going to commit to the entire series, to watch by time period. so i think it would go: s4, s2, movie, s1, s3.

but if you just want to watch the best one, s2 is amazing... and s3 i think it pretty underrated and worth checking out.

clemenza, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 21:28 (three years ago) link

I guess. Maybe that's why the first season kinda sucked. At any rate, if you didn't stick around long enough to see Bruce Campbell's portrayal of Reagan, you're doing yourself a disservice.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 21:42 (three years ago) link

I thought Reagan was really woven into S2 well. And--maybe I'm reading too much into it--thought the ending, with Mike Milligan relegated to a desk job, was some kind of comment on the dawn of the Reagan presidency.

Trying to remind myself this is the countdown thread, not a Fargo thread--it's just a show I like talking about.

Before we start today, let’s address a side-poll: I asked folks to provide their favorite shows that they watched this past year that were not released in 2020 and we got a bumper crop of options. In fact, there were so many options that there was little overlap: only a handful of shows got two votes and nothing got three, so this became less of a “side-poll” and more of a way to present our broader viewing tastes beyond the current year’s offerings.

I was one of the two Detroiters votes. Easily as funny and unpredictable as I Think You Should Leave and I wish I had caught on to it sooner. Comedy Central grossly mistreated it (possibly because it cost more than like 2 dollars to make?).

Chris L, Thursday, 11 February 2021 14:20 (three years ago) link

Speaking of slightly abstract comedy shows, ADBOHoF came on corny and overdone on first dosage but it won me over with a skewed sort of chicken fat: the heavy schmaltz of overdoing a joke with a million gags until it collapses under its own silliness. YMMV but anyone who liked I Think You Should Leave or Detroiters and quit this after one episode should maybe try again.
My fave bit remains the Ellen sketch.

torn about this show

imago, Thursday, 11 February 2021 14:26 (three years ago) link

The non-2020 show I discovered in 2020 but stupidly left off my list is actually a show which had a new season in 2020 but which I also stupidly left off the nominations list (but also I still haven't finished the final season so fair enough): The Clone Wars. Good enough to swing me from 'psssh, WGAF about a Star War' after seeing Rise of Stinkwalker to being borderline obsessive about a Star War. It singlehandedly makes the prequel era a compelling and fertile narrative space, which I would've thought next-to-impossible.

The best non-2020 series I saw was Rectify, which was as nearly-perfect a show as I've seen, from beginning to end. Performances, writing, tone...just beautiful, wouldn't change a thing. I wish the preacher from Deadwood would create some more stuff, knowing he had this in him.

S1, good, especially the unique use of appropriated soundtrack music from famous films (The Conversation, All The President's Men, etc.); S2, increasingly farfetched but worth watching. -Knots Landing (started cranking through Dallas again in the midst of lockdown doldrums and thought I should simultaneously sample its companion, which I discovered to be a much better show and downright underrated for something that ran for fourteen goddamn seasons)
-Columbo (yes, I really did only see this for the first time in 2020 after finally finishing Rockford Files and looking for something similar to fill the hole, but although it's not actually all that similar I am now in love with it and with Falk on their own merits)

Though it didn’t make my final cut ballot, I really enjoyed Quiz. It’s a three episode, 2 ½ hour TV film directed by Stephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons, The Grifters, Philomena) intelligently dramatizing the early 2000’s cheating scandal (or was it?) that rocked the original UK Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?
The great cast includes Matthew Macfadyen of Succession, Sian Clifford of Fleabag, Mark Bonnar of Catastrophe, Aisling Bea of This Way Up and Michael Sheen of everything.

there are indeed many scenes without marilyn manson in this show, though it does make sense that malkovich's pope character would gravitate to someone like manson's performative transgressiveness while ignoring the actual abuse he commits.

Mortimer and Whitehouse Gone Fishing, two aging comedians going around the UK fishing, which admittedly sounds terrible. The Trrip isn’t a bad comparison, but without sounding trite feels a but more organic, less needle between them and less competitive.

It’s an acute examination of male mental health and wellbeing and dealing with mortality, both there own and the loss they’ve experienced. The scene where Bob Mortimer revisits his childhood home and talks about the loss of his father is devastating. It’s often hilarious too and looks absolutely gorgeous.

Dan Worsley, Thursday, 11 February 2021 18:37 (three years ago) link

I haven't seen a second of it but "two nice men who have been hilarious and unproblematic in public for thirty years, hanging out together and talking" doesn't sound terrible

Having never heard of the books or the original 1970’s show starring Jon Pertwee, I figured I owed the first episode of this kids show a shot... and it’s good! Very twee, very bucolic, very funny, well cast and well filmed. Though it’s written by and stars Mackenzie Crook, who US ILXors may know best as Gareth from the original UK The Office and one of the two lead characters in The Detectorists, it has a distinctly (and yet uncloying) Neil Gaiman air about it.

I thought the first two seasons of Insecure were as good as anything HBO had done up till then. There are certainly still bright spots but it's running on steam imo. Rae remains one of television’s great comedians but the diffusion of the story’s thrust to the lives of the less interesting secondary characters isn’t helping and suggests that the most important ideas this show has to offer have already been presented. This season was focused on female friendship, which is a great topic but the plotting points generally came off as petty and underdeveloped. Insecure is wrapping up in 2021; I’m hoping for a strong finish.

The thing about Mortimer and Whitehouse is that they both have bad hearts. Also, Bob falls over. And there's sometimes a dog.

Abby McEnany’s Work in Progress - a comedy about a self-described suicidally depressed butch lesbian who falls in love with a trans-man half her age - was one of the more overlooked gems of 2020. No surprise: it came out at the start of the year, it’s stuck in the less-accessible-to-most Showtime ghetto, it stars mostly unknown actors (with some great strategic cameos) and the combination of OCD behavior-gender fluidity-suicide themes likely scared many folks off. It is a revelation nonetheless; deeply human and caring, willing to explore taboo subjects without preface, effortlessly inclusive, genuinely funny and remarkably well acted.

Season three of Search Party represented a leap to a new network, multiple new cast members (Cole Escola, Louie Anderson, Michaela Watkins) and a shift in tone that moved away from somewhat more subtle social commentary to direct parody. Mostly, it worked.

Then we started using the HBO Whateverit'scallednow app and decided to try again, pushed through the rest of season two...and then season three was great! I was psyched that the show had finally found its footing and looked forward to what was next!

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Friday, 12 February 2021 16:18 (three years ago) link

Brockmire never strived for subtlety but its final season was particularly unhinged. Taking a bold prognosticatory leap into an apocalyptic future, the show yoked Jim Brockmire with the task of being a single-parent empty nester and the new commissioner of the MLB. Predictions of the end of the world unfortunately came true a bit earlier than expected, making this acidly funny show a bit of a bummer. Even so, the acting and writing were as crisp as ever and, for me at least, this was an entirely satisfying end to one of the most unique, hysterical and criminally under acknowledged shows of the past five years.

I was interested in Work in Progress because Abby McEnany is a Chicago improv performer who I've seen on stage a bunch of times (maybe you too, Old Lunch?). But I don't have Showtime.

Thought season one of Search Party was pretty good, then season two started turning into something I wasn't into and we bailed halfway through. Then we started using the HBO Whateverit'scallednow app and decided to try again, pushed through the rest of season two...and then season three was great! I was psyched that the show had finally found its footing and looked forward to what was next!

Season four will, um, very pointedly not be making it onto my 2021 ballot.

I watched S3 and S4 back to back recently (since I can now watch HBO Max via Roku), and I actually preferred S4. There was some fun moments in S3, and I especially liked Michaela Watkins and Louie Anderson, but some elements of the courtroom comedy just seemed a little stale. I found S4 more compelling and unpredictable.

If S1 and S3 are your favorites, OL, maybe you just don't like when the show goes too dark? My wife liked S1, but bailed after S2 because the show got "too murdery." I think the show definitely walks a tightrope between frothy social comedy and edgy psycho-drama, and the balance doesn't work all the time, but I like the mix.

It occurred to me that, with the possible exception of David Letterman, I’ve spent more time watching Alex Trebek than any other person on television. A few decades ago, Trebek self-consciously adopted a more parochial tone, often casually belittling or betraying an unconsidered sexist or ageist response to the contestants. It was clearly quizmaster schtick but it got stale as more contestants strayed from the atypical player profile. He reigned it back in a bit in his final years, but there was always a risk of being treated like a dolt if you dared an uneducated guess, especially if it regarded Canada.

All that said, his intonation, clarity and consistency were nearly flawless. That made it all the more jarring when, in the final clue of his final game and on a question that effected the likelihood of a potential winner, he flubbed by stating the question after a contestant’s mistaken guess and not allowing other players to buzz in. The producers rapidly set off an end-of-game signal but I'd never seen Trebek make such an error. It was a heartbreaking sign of just how much he had covered up how ill he really was and an astonishing testament to his consistency over the prior forty years.

I think Ken Jennings has been, thus far, an excellent host but it’s still a little jarring not to hear Alex’s voice every day. I actually miss him.

If S1 and S3 are your favorites, OL, maybe you just don't like when the show goes too dark?

I'd say that's accurate. S4 was basically a horror movie with some jokes sprinkled among the psychosis. I don't have an issue with darkness, but the tone of Search Party just wobbles way too wildly for me to hang with it. This season was just kinda bad vibes city without much of a point.

I didn't vote and completely forgot that I watched Dead to Me this year. What it's got going for it imo is pretty much the awesome performances of the 2 leads, but those performances justify a placement (though this feels a little high). A great depiction of 2 idiosyncratic, seriously flawed and broken women finding solace in their friendship despite how different they are from each other. Expectations are not very high for future seasons as it is heading in some very ridiculous directions though

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 12 February 2021 17:46 (three years ago) link

I was the #1 vote for Work in Progress. Honestly, I'm grateful that I even remembered to vote for it, as it was pre-pandemic, and I still have a hard time conceiving of anything pre-March as being a part of 2020. I can't do better than forks' description here: "deeply human and caring, willing to explore taboo subjects without preface, effortlessly inclusive, genuinely funny and remarkably well acted." Plus, one of the very funniest celebrity cameos that I've ever seen in anything (no,I wouldn't dream of spoiling it).

I was also one of the Killing Eve voters. I agree that there was a noticeable drop-off this season, but one great stand-alone episode (the one set entirely in Russia) and an effective final scene in the season finale kept my feelings for the show on the positive side.

I think I was also one of the top 5 votes for Jeopardy? forks' intro above is lovely, and echoes my sentiments pretty much exactly. I had been dreading Alex's passing since his diagnosis was first announced, but then he ended up passing away two days after my father died, at which point I was too numb to really even respond to the news. I wasn't watching much of anything during the week or so after that, but when I was ready again, having a bunch of Alex's final episodes stored up in my PVR was poignant, and possibly even a bit therapeutic--watching those last episodes infused with the weight of losing my father, and our collective loss of Alex, took me back 30 years to the experience of the many dinners my family would have, sitting on the couch in front of our TV trays while watching and playing along with Jeopardy.

Alex Garland, of Ex Machina and Annihilation fame, is known for his didactic, tech-heavy, convoluted, slow-paced and bleak sci-fi. The second season of the 90’s nostalgia cringe comedy with a twist - co-creator thirtysomethings Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle play semi-autobiographical 13 year old versions of themselves and no one seems to notice they’re clearly not teenagers - got darker, better and more ambitious. Seven more episodes are still on the way at a date TBA.

Devs was fine bottom-half-of-my-ballot fodder. I could tell from early on it was going to be vaporous nonsense but it was easy on the eyes. Something about the 'secret actual name of the show you don't learn until the end' + 'name of earlier Garland project' = 'DO U SEE WHAT WE DID THERE' formulation made it all seem a bit like an elaborate attempt at a clever joke.

The buzz from everyone I’ve talked to is pretty standard: give it a season to warm up and you’ll be fully hooked. But what is the secret sauce behind a show that four voters put in their top five? Tim Rogers - the inquisitive, obsessive, former YouTube reviewer for Kotaku and possessor of a self-professed painfully eidetic memory - never met an idea that he couldn’t expand upon. Having left Kotaku at the end of 2019 to start his own video game review and development hub, ActionButton.com, Rogers has since released a total of five heavily-produced YouTube reviews over the past nine months. The shortest (for Pac-Man) is three hours, the longest is six and concerns a 1994 Japanese-only dating sim called Tokimeki Memorial. This kind of content defines niche entertainment, but I'd go so far as to say that a love for video games isn't required to appreciate an Action Button review. You just have to love a specific sort of neurodivergent enthusiasm. For those of us who have embraced Rogers' wildly specific and deeply personal digressions and remarkable shaggy dog anecdotes, each new review offers an entire week of viewing and insight into a truly unique mind. In the words of his own memorable sign-off, Rogers was born stupid but he will not die hungry.

The new season of Big Mouth dropped in December, making me wonder how many voters were specifically excited about the show’s work for 2020 and how many just generally liked the franchise. Episode synopsis suggest the new season is more of the same surprisingly sophisticated animated comedy takes on teen gross-out topics (constipation, hand jobs, periods, jerking off) that got it eyeballs in the first place, but I’d like it if a fan could let us know if the quality has dropped off at all?

Criminally underwatched, almost entirely critically ignored and very nearly not released at all, The Dress Up Gang is the brainchild of California-based comedians Cory Loykasek and Donny Divanian. Alongside a stellar troupe that includes Frankie Quinones, Brent Winbach, Kirk Fox and (surreally) Andie MacDowell, The Dress Up Gang belongs to the same style of slow and kind comedy as the work of John Wilson and Joe Pera; anybody who loves those two should give this a few episodes. It’s destined to be a cult hit but it desperately deserves better.

I watched the first episode of Dead To Me and could not deal with its kind of horrible-people comedy.

Dark has a couple episodes that I found really cool, but I was generally bored by its glacial pace.

I wish I liked the Expanse as much as other people here, but something about it -- the pace? -- keeps me at a distance. I love the books, though.

GBBO was possibly my gateway into baking, but nowadays it's largely on a different track to my baking projects -- though I did try a couple GBBO recipes from the latest season!

Giri/Haji kept surprising me, especially with its humor.

Just catching up!

There needs to be a name for the genre of TV which involves lots of apologising and long shots of tear-glazed eyes/people crying. I recently watched American Horror Story S1 (I don't like to rush these things) and it was all people saying sorry and crying! I counted the 'sorrys' in an episode of Cobra Kai and stopped at 12. Hill House was like this too.

Anyway, long way round of saying Dark was totally this genre of telly. It was fine for about a season and a half and just disappeared up its own arse.

Gone Fishing is so beautiful. I watched the first couple of episode expecting it to be self-indulgent but not a bit of it.

Whoa, Lovecraft placed low!! I was one of the #1 voters. This show did some really special, spectacular shit. Key for me was the balance between big cosmic horror and the actually way more horrific and gripping horrors of Black life in mid-20th Century America (or, well, just America). Much more layered and complex than I expected (have not read or even perused the plot of the novel so I have no idea how straight a translation it is), but also a lot of fun between the instances of trauma. If they manage to keep all the plates spinning, this could wind up being one of the best HBO series ever.

lovecraft made the bottom of my ballot. i appreciated the ambition and flat-out loved some of the episodes (especially the ones that focused on ji-ah, hippolyta, and those scary ballerina twins, my god), but i didn't really feel like they were able to bring it all together as more than some satisfying pieces.

still, the great was really great and it was an easy vote.

The new season of Big Mouth dropped in December, making me wonder how many voters were specifically excited about the show’s work for 2020 and how many just generally liked the franchise.

All the episodes came out on the same day in December, and we voted in January; I'd definitely watched all ten within a fortnight, if not a week.

(franchise?!)

I’d like it if a fan could let us know if the quality has dropped off at all?

No, imo. This season did shift its focus slightly onto more grounded character micro-arcs: whereas earlier seasons would largely build eps on "aspect of puberty happens to character x for the first time," or "delve into the demented, absurd real life of the B-characters like Coach Steve," this one went a little more for using personal growth as the plot drivers, while still wringing as much (literally) juvenile gross-out humour as possible along the way.

The fragility of teenage friendship has been done before in the show, but opening with an actual mini-series set at camp, where Andrew makes a better friend than Nick, and a regular camper arrives having transitioned since the other kids saw her, gave opportunities to dig deeper. Lola and Jay getting together last season was played on top as a "put two OTT disruptive shrieking characters into a couple" move. This season made the loneliness / abandonment of both children a more explicit and seriously-handled connection between them, without being used as a punchline lever.

But that's a subtle change, and doesn't affect the quality in either direction.

Season four will, um, very pointedly not be making it onto my 2021 ballot.

we were losing it when the gang and Susan Sarandon were trying to chase each others' cars... then they got into a roundabout and I'm not sure anything can ever top it. Show keeps getting more bizarre, love it.

Yeah, Netflix was really quick to pull the plug on shows and blame COVID. I’m still pissed we won’t get one more season of GLOW, that was really turning into an exceptional show and Betty Gilpin was particularly killing it.

Hulu’s British/Irish collaborative dramatic adaptation of the “it’s complicated” relationship novel Normal People catapulted its leads to stardom and struck an international nerve during lockdown. I’ve yet to see an episode; would one of our eight voters care to school me on what makes watching two pretty gen-z'ers fucking so compelling? I may have answered my own question.

As the face and frontline of the gonzo YouTube channel All Gas No Brakes, presenter Andrew Callaghan deftly walks the razor-thin line between mocking, supporting and excoriating the insider-outsider subjects he and his team document. Whether at a NASCAR race, the launch of a NASA rocket, a Donald Trump Jr book launch or a furry festival, AGNB allows its subjects ample rope to hang themselves, leaning into the American tendency to talk beyond one’s means. And also to rap. Everyone wants to rap for some reason.

Following a much anticipated on-site video at the attempted Capitol coup, expect to see AGNB make the leap to television this year as an Abso Lutely / Tim and Eric-produced series.

Bojack Horseman ended in 2020 with an eight episode drop of the final half of the sixth season that explored its lead character’s post-fame life and struggle with self-immolation.

This took off so strongly in the UK that it shocked me, and everything was focused around this guy's performance (and his sex appeal, which someone else will have to disect tbh)

I'll go back to why it taking off shocked me- he is absolutely sensational as a contemporary rural irish guy of that type (ok, itself a little idealised but nevertheless) gawky, confident, awkward outside his comfort zones. I really didnt expect a UK audience to appreciate it (and the feedback everywhere was for the details as well as his thighs in GAA shorts) but perhaps it translated only so far and it just didnt carry as far as the states?

I didnt even watch all of it (the story as a whole was a bit painful emo for me) but i tried to catch his highlights and imo there wasnt a better acting performance anywhere all year

Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen’s Amazon/BBC-produced five-part anthology series Small Axe has proven challenging for critics to pigeonhole. Though each is thematically connected and every episode’s story informs the other conceptually, they could just as easily be viewed as separate short or full-length films, which has led to the LA Film Critics Associations voting for the collective series as the best movie of the year. It’s rare praise and the only obvious analogue is Kieslowski’s Ten Commandments series The Dekalogue. Good company indeed.

Schitt’s Creek’s transition from obscure Canadian comedy to Netflix hit is due to equal parts greater audience exposure, a willingness to embrace more complex and humanistic stories, and a deft hand at inserting modern sexuality into sitcom tropes without apology. The series closed on an up note in 2020, winning seven Emmys, leaving Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara in their third (fourth?) act as international stars and Dan Levy as a gay icon.

I have some other work to do so we’re going to finish up our top 10 tomorrow.

First though, I’d like to introduce our poll runners-up. Each of the following six shows received four votes and 14 points. An additional single vote (even a last place vote!) would’ve been enough to bump any one of these into the mid-60s of our poll. With that in mind, before we hit the home stretch, here are a few misfit toys that come broadly, if perhaps somewhat less enthusiastically, recommended.

The pitch-black surrealist workplace satire Corporate started on Comedy Central at exactly the wrong moment: before CC's HBO acquisition and just after the streaming revolution, when a show without an easy VOD option simply couldn’t develop an audience. Corporate absolutely deserved better; it made the most of a stellar ensemble cast (is there a more underrated comic actor than Lance Reddick?) doing great work with subversive comedy writing and nuanced direction. Underneath the show’s veneer of loudly-professed cynical nihilism, there beat a surprisingly soft and sweet heart. The lead characters' inner struggles with depression, desire and aspiration often cut all too close. I mourn the show’s cancellation and look forward to its eventual rediscovery as a time-capsule of late 2010’s office angst.

In no way is Schitt's Creek (#2 on my ballot) overrated. We just discovered it last year after being stupidly put off by the (admittedly still kinda off-putting) title for way too long. And my gf is now running through it a second time, and what I've rewatched confirms that it holds up. It's definitely in my all-time pantheon of sitcoms which are both legitimately funny and legitimately emotionally involving (alongside Parks & Rec and the first five or so seasons of Roseanne).

At its peak, The Eric Andre Show was the best thing on television. Its final season was mostly a recycling of gags from earlier seasons and outtakes from Andre’s once-bootlegged and soon-to-be-re released film Bad Trip. Perhaps it’s no surprise that after seven or so hours of deathless art and nearly ten years as a GG Allin provocateur, Andre - now an honest-to-god Disney star - wasn’t entirely sure where to go from here. How do you continue to surprise your celebrity guests with dada outbursts when it’s what you’re known for? How do you produce the unexpected when that's all that anyone expects out of you? The answer, this presumably final time around, is that you don’t. You present a surprisingly maudlin victory lap where I trust everyone was well paid for their time.

It's not that any particular aspect of Normal People is all that unique, just that giving a season's worth of episodes over to an intimate portrayal of people having a regular old ups and downs relationship, free of any other gimmick, feels refreshingly low concept in the age of prestige tv, high concept absurdist dramas, comedies, sci-fi fantasies. It pops because it's not an exciting elevator pitch. Add to that, short episodes. In that way I do think it's one way forward as a reaction to all that noise of the content overlead, maybe setting the stage for more shows just zoning in on people's 'normal' complicated lives.

abcfsk, Monday, 15 February 2021 17:33 (three years ago) link

This last season of Eric Andre Show mostly only suffers in comparison to the four previous stellar seasons. Maintaining those highs indefinitely would've been a tall order, so it's probably good that he's bowing out now. Especially since Hannibal called it quits. His absence was glaring.

I dunno, I feel many real life relationships are more complicated, messy, absurd, funny and interesting than the one portrayed in the story, which I largely found boring and one note. Though I did watch it all.

I started watching Schitt's Creek from Season 1 during the first UK lockdown. I'd been told that it gradually improves, and this is what kept me going through Seasons 1 & 2, where I might otherwise have bailed. I thought S1 and S2 were OK, but a long way from the masterpiece that I'd been promised it would become.

For me, things started turning around midway through S3, roughly at the point that David got work at the Blouse Barn. It was around then that I introduced the show to Kevin. As soon I started watching it together with him, it became markedly more entertaining. Funny, that.

S4 was fun, S5 was even better, and by the end of S5 I basically found the whole thing endlessly hilarious. Particularly the way Moira says "baby". Well, particularly the way she says anything, really.

I'm now two episodes into S6, and loving it more than ever before.

The whole premise of the show is very relatable in certain aspects (we used to be rich, we moved to a small town, we gradually integrated), which doubtless helps.

Philip Pullman’s 1990’s young adult fantasy novel trilogy His Dark Materials appears to have struck HBO execs as ripe for harvest as a potential Potter-esque gold mine. Now in the second of its third seasons, it appears to have shown up a bit late to the cultural zeitgeist.

That's fine, but regardless of how you rate the show, I think most would agree it stands out a bit among the big streaming hypes - it's a simpler premise, a simpler story. And I think that appealed to a lot of people.

Michelle McNamara’s well-publicized research for her nonfiction true-crime book I’ll Be Gone in the Dark drew a great deal of attention to the Original Night Stalker (aka the Golden State Killer) cold case and may have contributed to having the investigation reopened. McNamara died before she could finish the book but her husband, the comedian Patton Oswalt, worked with a pair of writers to bring it to completion. Since McNamara’s death, a former cop was identified and arrested as the Golden State Killer and I'll Be Gone was developed into an HBO miniseries.

I’m deeply tempted to write up a 1000-word explainer on the rules and ethos of Only Connect and just why watching at least two episodes of this show has become a nightly ritual for me over the past month. I would include at least a full paragraph of praise for the dryly erudite and warmly generous wit of Victoria Coren Mitchell, who keeps the whole enterprise moving, and a separate chapter of frustration for the painfully British and completely unguessable soccer / snooker / cricket / darts / local street names questions. Maybe later. For the moment, I’ll just say that an ilxor promised me that if I kept watching Only Connect, I would eventually start getting better at it. I May Destroy You will obv get #1 but I am praying to all gods that How To with John Wilson will at least outrank Ted Lasso, which I've noted before that I absolutely hated - the nadir of these "hold hands and hug each other and everything will be better" nicecore shows, felt like I got a lobotomy after watching it

I watched a couple of episodes of Corporate on an airplane, and I enjoyed it, thought the jokes were funny, but in the end wasn't moved to watch any more of it -- too one-note. Bizarrely I found myself comparing it negatively to Workaholics, which -- I thought I just said I objected to one-note shows? -- but Workaholics has a basic warmth that's lacking in Corporate.

only connect justifies the licence fee alone, and the cringey singing is a highlight.

danzig, Monday, 15 February 2021 19:17 (three years ago) link

Speaking of sitcoms with basic warmth -- with Schitt's Creek I had the very classic progression of starting to watch it in 2016 when it was kind of only modestly known and being like "there's an incredibly winning sitcom with Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara nobody's ever heard of" and then finally people DID hear of it and I instantly became one of those "come on, it's not THAT good" people, but I watched it through to the end, I cared about everyone, I accepted its basic warmth and corniness -- a total success, but I doubt I'll ever watch an episode of it again.

All in the Family made me cry a few times

Strictly Come Dancing made me cry this year. It might even have been the final? But it was a night when lockdown was at its darkest and deepest. The UK government had a press conference earlier in the evening with some terrible and depressing news on it, probably about people not being able to see each other over Christmas at all, and then the dancers had to come on and pretend everything was glamorous and showbizzy, even though there was no live audience and none of the couples were allowed to interact with each other. It was all so weird, and bless them, they were all trying so hard.

Any love for I Hate Suzie (Sky Atlantic/HBO Max)? Just finished it and it knocked me flat.

The structure is quite unlike anything I've seen on TV recently, with most of the background exposition left until the last episode and every episode having a completely different emotional pitch, setting and characters (aside from the principals). Would have been my #2 had I managed to organise myself to vote in time.

koogs, Tuesday, 16 February 2021 09:43 (three years ago) link

Oh right, I feel bad about not voting now! Yes the stages of grief structure is a really fascinating way to frame the story. I loved that the Naomi character is secretly the hero, and the claustrophobic feeling of living in Suzie's head the whole time.

Definitely worth continuing if you've started it as it really builds into something cathartic and earned with each building block. Have a hard time picking my favourite episode - the one showing Suzie's chaotic family is devastating, the Comic-Con one is awkwardly hilarious, and the ending is perfectly executed.

By my count, The Boys is the fifth (Aggretsuko, Umbrella Academy, I Am Not Okay with This, Kingdom) and last of our 77 shows to be directly based on a comic book or webcomic, though signs point to that number increasing drastically in 2021. Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's long-running comic series - detailing the adventures of a government-backed black ops group of chaotic-good super-powered superhero hunters monitoring and censuring the more technicolor-clad and publicly-beloved lawful-evil supergroups - is known for its sadistic humor, graphic ultraviolence, withering cynicism, explicit sex and Chris Claremont-level team dynamics. The show appears to follow suit.

The Boys really is top tier bingeable widescreen trash TV, with some surprisingly acute things to say about Celeb culture and modern elitism. I wouldn't be surprised if it finds itself the inheritor of Game of Throne's ratings in a few seasons' time.

To what extent does the show embody his baser impulses (i.e. tropes that someone in junior high would find awesome and edgy)?

It indulges those impulses with some regularity, but isn't governed by them.

Sex Education, the contemporary British-set and produced Netflix dramedy starring Gillian Anderson as a sex therapist and Asa Butterfield as her son, is by my count the fifth (We Are Who We Are, Never Have I Ever, I Am Not Okay with This, Big Mouth) and last show in the 77 with teenagers having sex at the crux of its story.

With the bloom of novelty off the Baby Yoda rose, The Mandalorian dug deeper into its fan service bag this year, providing jumping-off spots for a few new shows, an uncanny valley Luke Skywalker cameo, a revolving roster of guest stars, expensive looking CGI, some impressive set pieces and all the other obvious trimmings that this chambara inspired space-oater could carry. Mostly it held together... though two seasons in a row of the guy who never takes off his mask taking off his mask in the final episode is getting a little silly.

Here’s me (slightly edited) from early January in the Netflix thread: My gf binged Queen's Gambit and I joined her cold for the last episode. I couldn't help thinking that part of the reason that this show caught the zeitgeist so squarely is that it represents an impossible and impossibly of-our-time fantasy: a flawed woman makes her way to the apex of her industry based on talent, merit, a strong support system and immense hard work and, on meeting the glass ceiling, is confronted by a group of gatekeeper men who treat her dismissively at first but then ultimately deferentially acknowledge everything she's done to get there and more or less apologize for not taking her seriously. I'm not sure I've ever seen a television story climax that way.

Thought at first that Queen's Gambit was just kinda boilerplate time-killing prestige tv with v good performances but not a lot of heft. It gradually won me over, though, partly on the level that forks delineates. It may be fantasy to an extent but it's engaging to watch high-level competitors ultimately demonstrating kindness and respect towards those they've been trying to savagely destroy.

The Mandolinrainian (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 17:48 (three years ago) link

Speaking of which, this recent NYT piece calls it ”the new nice television”: anti-cynical, reasonably low-stakes dramedy that presents good people being rewarded for their good efforts. That’s a little reductive when applied to Ted Lasso imo. It’s a program that absolutely looks insipid on first glance but, once you’ve knocked out the first episode, you’ll likely see its undercurrent of sadness and loss. For all the cookie-baking and “ding-dong-darn” homilies, Lasso is at heart about the bravery and strength required to meet real hardship and overcome it without irony or disassociation. That requires broad shoulders and a gentle touch, both of which Sudeikis has in spades.

Surely when historians look back on this year, it will be remembered as the one in which Rick and Morty fever hit the dubious peak of "Rick and Morty but it's Star Trek."

This is entirely unfair to Lower Decks! I've said this before, but it's easily the Trekkiest of the new batch of Trek series.

Mike Mignola Electric Co. (Leee), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 17:59 (three years ago) link

As a Brit I was sceptical of Ted Lasso. I was convinced they'd mess up the nuances about British football culture, but they nailed it and gosh darn it, had one of the most interesting and nuanced characters in comedy in ages.

Dan Worsley, Tuesday, 16 February 2021 18:00 (three years ago) link

I think my thing re: 'nice' entertainment is that there was such a long stretch when the majority of our entertainment options were brainlessly 'nice', which was then followed by the slow encroachment of more cynical fare which served as a refreshing antidote, but we're now at a point where lots of things in the real world have just been shitty for a long time and so much of the entertainment landscape is similarly feel-bad (and, I think inarguably, has itself been instrumental in making aspects of the real world shittier). So, despite my perpetual gen-x-ian tendency to sneer at false sentiment and bland niceness, I'm increasingly drawn to depictions of like basic kindness and decency as an antidote to the oversaturation of casual cruelty and grim n' grit even in light entertainment.

Like (just to meander down this path a bit more) my gf watches all of the bleak crime dramas that come down the pike and some of the shit I see in those things...my god. I'm a huge horror fan and I'll occasionally be walking through the room and will feel compelled to mention that some scene or another was as needlessly, ott graphic as anything I've seen in a horror flick. And this is just run-of-the-mill mainstream entertainment these days. So yes, the shows that are making an effort to move in the completely opposite direction are very welcome imo.

Which is to say: will check out this Ted Lasso chap!

Plenty of fans and fellow critics had recommended the comedy, based on an NBC Sports promo sketch, about a good-hearted, optimistic Kansas football coach (Jason Sudeikis) who moves to London to manage a soccer team. When its first season arrived on Apple TV+ last summer, I found its early episodes chuckle-worthy, but nothing compelling. It was … sweet, I guess? Nice? Eh. I moved on.

Cut to January. A mob attacked the U.S. Capitol, the MyPillow guy was walking into the White House with notes about martial law, and the once-rote transfer of power became a white-knuckle ride. On Jan. 20, I spent a day writing about the uneasy TV coverage of the inauguration, then a night reviewing the prime-time inauguration special, its notes of hope cut with minor-key reminders of strife and pandemic.

Too wound up to sleep, I needed an antidote for all those days of cable-news doom-watching. I decided to give “Ted Lasso” another shot.

It was … sweet. It was nice. And God, did I need that.

the trailer for ted lasso is so bad that i'm never gonna watch the show. unless i missed that the journalist at the presser was meant to be american( i thought he had an english accent) he would never say 'tie'.

Both have their place, but I can definitely see how the real world has veered so perilously far into boo human cruelty territory that I begrudge no one for overpraising stuff like this.

I saw better television this year but nothing ever got me as viscerally excited as a new episode of The Last Dance. Yes, MJ’s involvement somewhat skews the series’ ability to dig too deeply and sure, if you don’t care about basketball (or even just this era of basketball), there may not be much for you here. But I am a basketball fan who grew up in the eighties and nineties in the south before the Grizzlies moved to Memphis so I watched basketball on WGN, the only cable channel we got that regularly carried games. Even now the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I hear Alan Parsons Project's “Sirius” and Ray Clay’s frenzied growl of “ANNNNNNND NOW! FROM NORTH... CARRRRRROLINA...” so, in many ways, this show was the acme of my 2020.

while we (or at least I still am) are talking about "nice" TV shows, what i keep coming back to is that How To with John Wilson, a show that i think belongs to the aforementioned category, and how i loved it so much, i keep on trying to articulate why i loved it so much despite my growing annoyance at these type of TV shows and i'm honestly at a loss - is it because it's non-fiction? idk

the best moments for me were probably the highlight sequences that paired jordan highlights with era-appropriate hip-hop. it's a standard thing to do now, but hip-hop and the nba were far less intertwined during jordan's era. jordan himself was dismissive of hip-hop, and preferred adult-contempo r&b (one of my favorite, one of the most-memed, moments of the series comes when he's bopping along to the new kenny lattimore album)

the nyt had a good piece about jordan and the nba's evolving relationship with hip-hop: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/03/arts/music/michael-jordan-last-dance-soundtrack.html

As long as we’re talking basketball, i think you could reasonably argue that Jordan (or Lebron these days) likely deserved to win MVP every year he played. But people get tired of excellence and want to share the wealth. With that in mind, I would suggest that Better Call Saul has been television’s MVP for the past five years, consistently presenting prestige programming’s best ensemble ably and honestly fumbling in the most harrowing situations imaginable.

Two things I know to be true: season five of Breaking Bad was about as good as the show’s ever been and Rhea Seehorn deserves a goddamn Emmy.

So I have this weird thing where I've never had any interest whatsoever in sports (watching, playing, talking about, etc.) but I realized at some point that I find sports documentaries deeply compelling (Hoop Dreams is one of my favorite movies, own and have watched a bunch of 30 for 30s, etc.). I think maybe I just need to have it sculpted into a narrative in order for it to click for me. Looking forward to watching The Last Dance at some point, particularly after seeing it place this high (which suggests that it transcends its moment in providing 'well fuck I guess we're gonna be stuck inside our homes for a long time' succor at the beginning of the pandemic).

When I first came to New York City in 2000, I couch-crashed in Chelsea and would sometimes wake up early to explore what the place looked like in the AM. One Tuesday at 5 in the morning, I found a guerrilla photo shoot going on at the intersection of 7th avenue and 10th street with a drag performer sprawled lasciviously over a four foot tall mound of auto tires. That’s the kind of New York that John Wilson captures best and that continuously resonated for me in watching How To, the unlikely and unconsidered and barely glimpsed city. If all Wilson did was shine a spotlight there, his show would have already earned its place in last year’s best television, but that’s only the beginning. Each episode was packed with unlikely connections and amazing oddballs, held together by a shockingly structured agenda that he only reveals deliberately slowly. Wilson didn’t create experimental television or the video collage essay format but what he’s doing here seems entirely sui generis and important. It’s a kind of genius, a filmic kismet.

Rhea Seehorn has most definitely been robbed over and over. The Kim reveal towards the end of this last season was just masterfully done, stripping away so much of what I thought I knew about the character but in a way that was completely consistent with everything that had come before. The show is just as much about her arc as it is about Jimmy's imo.

The key to really enjoying What We Do in the Shadows is the realization that the show is secretly about Guillermo’s journey. All four of the show’s excellently-performed lead vampires are murderous and unchanging buffoons, so (Jackie Daytona aside) there’s only so much character development to be done there. On the other hand, Guillermo de la Cruz’s arc from schlubby vampire personal assistant to unwilling badass vampire hunter is tremendous fun to watch develop. Season two completely embraced Guillermo as a protagonist and sets the stage for an inevitable confrontation with the Staten Island clan.

I really enjoyed What We Do in the Shadows and found myself more moved to watch all of it than I did How To, and yet I can't say it's BETTER than How To. It's really a lot like Schitt's Creek; quirky characters who are superficially types out of place but who over time develop into individual characters who we come to see as exactly where they should be. Warm, easy to watch, goes for the easy joke sometimes but one finds it hard to blame it.

Intellectualism and nuance is given categorically short shrift in most popular entertainment but Michaela Coel leaned heavy into presenting the complexities of a world where there are no clearly defined absolutes. Victims can be monsters, rape can be a damaged cry for help, sex can be hateful, presenting your trauma can be selfishness, social media love can damage you, your friends can’t really know you, and all of these as opposites are proved true as well. This uncertainty is a conscious reflection on the show’s central concern: the importance and fungibility of consent. Control is an impossible thing to attain and yet it’s the only thing all this show’s characters strive for: control of self, control of one’s story, control of one’s sexuality and control of the repercussions for having that control taken away.

Coel’s remarkable finale, which left me teary-eyed and in awe, seemed to suggest that the illusion of control is unattainable, that if we could truly control everything that hurt us or moved us, we’d break apart no less spectacularly than we already have. I think it’s safe to say that I May Destroy You is going to be remembered as one of the defining documents of the past decade and Coel starred, wrote, co-directed and produced the whole damn thing. Whatever she does next, I want to be first in line.

I may have enjoyed a few other shows more this last year, or rather some may have been more on my wavelength, but when looking back at the shows of the year, there was no doubt in my mind this was the only choice for my #1 spot.

The only show from my ballot that I'm surprised to not see in the countdown is The Outsider, which imo is probably the closest a Stephen King adaptation has come to replicating the feel and the rhythms of a Stephen King novel.

scampless, rattled and puce (gyac), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 20:13 (three years ago) link

i will say that if anyone is holding off on watching IMDY because it's "the rape show" and it's going to be heavy, don't. The tone shifts a lot from scene to scene and episode to episode; it's uproariously funny and also utterly devastating, often in the same hour. What it's not is anything that you expect it's going to be and that includes cruel or preachy.

please do!

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 23:23 (three years ago) link

I submitted twice--I think this was the final version:

1. Small Axe
2. The Last Dance
3. Better Call Saul (S5)
4. Mrs. America
5. Ozark (S3)
6. Modern Family (S11)
7. A Teacher
8. Homecoming (S2)
9. Fargo (S4)
10. Killing Eve (S3)

Catching up:

1. Homecoming (S1)
2. Mr. Robot (all seasons)

That's really a list of everything I watched--I only left off one show. But even at #10, I enjoyed some of Killing Eve's weakest season so far.

My #1 for catching-up should have been Modern Family, which I forgot. Ups and downs, but enjoyed it the whole way.

That british guy is incredibly annoying and has zero range and i hate him in everything, will not watch him

ime this is the thing in which he is most consistently well-used. often a little goes a long way, but the overall tone of this supports him being one-fifth of the ensemble.

also the episode where he's the lead, in S2, is one of the best of the series.

That's kind of what I was talking about! Sometimes the humour is absolutely pitch black, shockingly so, but the show also has such incredible compassion for its topics and subjects that the humour is somehow never too much. And yet it's still the funniest thing I've seen in years. Such rewatch value too. It would be impossible to catch everything on the first go!

three months pass...

I was doing a mental inventory last night of all the shows where I'm waiting for new seasons:

Better Call Saul - first on most lists, I suspect.
Big Little Lies - think there's another one on the way.
Atlanta - caught up in time.
Ozark - one more, then call it a day, please.
Stranger Things - I'll watch because I'm come this far; not excited.
Killing Eve - ditto.
True Detective and Homecoming - in development, I believe.
Dead to Me and Flack - indifferent, but I'd continue.

You all are the best for alerting me to the existence of the Dress-Up Gang. I am not much of a comedy watcher nowadays but I could watch 10 seasons of that show and hope somehow they can produce more of it (I know it was a minor miracle the show even aired)

Also, I May Destroy You was as good as 10 #1 votes suggests
