These Drinks Is Vicious: The Killing Eve Thread

I loved a lot of Killing Eve, especially Jodie Comer--funniest psychopath since Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs; I thought at first Sandra Oh's mannerisms would drive me up the wall, but I came to like her a lot, too--but not the ending. It was such a blatant "we have to do something to set up a second season" mish-mash. Found the music fascinating. Didn't know any of it--it felt like one long version of "Some Velvet Morning" at times.

I want to rewatch all of Killing Eve again soon. Maybe right before the next season comes out. Sandra Oh is usually the best thing in everything she is in.

I loved Oksana's supervisor: "These drinks is vicious." The ongoing by-play between the two of them was the highlight of the show for me.

I watched the first episode, then half of the second, then bailed out. But then I came back a week or so later and made it to the end. There was some really good stuff in it - Sandra Oh was fantastic, as mentioned, and it was good to see Kim Bodnia from The Bridge again (as Jodie Comer's handler), but yeah, the ending sucked, and the whole "Russia is a dank hellhole where everyone will betray you at a moment's notice" thing was a total cliché. (As was the whole "sexy young woman is super-assassin" thing.) But the woman who played Comer's former teacher was great. A mixed bag at best.

We should've had a Killing Eve thread. Maybe when the next series comes out. i liked the ending. It was fun.

a lot of the music was david holmes wasn't it as part of the Unloved crew that he is part of.

I loved this show.

It fell off quite rapidly about five episodes in but the first few are excellent and Jodie Comer is phenomenal throughout. I’m looking forward to season two.

ShariVari, Monday, 31 December 2018 15:22 (seven months ago) link

(xpost) I had a feeling the music had been made specifically for the show; it seemed unlikely that with so many songs I wouldn't recognize at least a couple of them. Really inventive.

clemenza, Monday, 31 December 2018 15:23 (seven months ago) link

Agree with SV it tails off p badly. But I may just feel that way because my favorite relationship is the one between Eve and yer man out of Ben Elton sitcoms. In fact he's the best thing in it by far.

I listen to the Killing Eve sndtk on youtube sometimes. "Killer Shangri-Lah" and "K" are so great. So much slowdivey atmosphere.

In the epg I can see one episode listed for Apr 12 at 23:25 which I think is a repeat.

Season 1 aired six months later in the UK.

saw the first episode and thought the small amusements of the early episodes of S1 were absent - lacked the charm of the interplay between characters. I enjoyed all of S1, even in its more wild later episodes, but it will need a bit more than Villanelle being capriciously violent and pouting to do it.

Fizzles, Monday, 15 April 2019 06:19 (four months ago) link

Konstantin is such a great character--hope Kim Bodnia wins some awards. (He's Danish, not Russian.)

I won't spoil the set up, but "Okay--love you" is up there with the show's funniest lines.

I drifted off for the last half of episode 3 but was able to see what I missed on Bravo's site. Even on a small computer screen, the last few minutes were beautiful visually.

I think you're wrong in giving up on this show--two of the first three episodes have been quite good (the first was a little slow).

Is this showing on UK tv yet? Just seen that RTE is on the 3rd episode of the 2nd season. Haven't seen a time for a British channel.

Yes, it's not scheduled. BBC are waiting until the entire series has aired on BBCA so they can drop all eight episodes on iPlayer again, and transmission might come later than that.

The Poppy Family! I've liked most all of the music in this without knowing any of it--I even admire that it never relies on familiar and overly familiar standbys. But it was nice to recognize something, and even there, pretty creative (ditto the non-English "Angel of the Morning" later on).

Yerac, Monday, 29 April 2019 13:56 (three months ago) link

I really like this show but can I complain here about the soundtrack? it's so fucking loud and intrusive.

akm, Monday, 29 April 2019 19:15 (three months ago) link

I really liked the music usage in the first season, haven't really noticed it in the new episodes so far except for them reusing a song.

Yerac, Monday, 29 April 2019 19:46 (three months ago) link

it just comes blaring in in every other scene. the music itself is fine, but it's overused, and too loud.

I just watched the 4th episode. I decided I really like the music in episodes. I'm into the fuzzy ye ye, shoegazerous, asian covers. It fits with all the murderous, super styley, la femme vibe. It's pretty hot.

Yerac, Sunday, 5 May 2019 01:17 (three months ago) link

Some other television show seems to be getting all the attention...Still enjoying this. Not much music in last in last night's episode. I guess we're left to ponder what happened between Eve and Villanelle when they were alone. Maybe, maybe not (haven't read the books).

clemenza, Monday, 6 May 2019 15:24 (three months ago) link

It's a bit shit now. Plot totally treading water, mostly lame jokes. Eve hiring Villanelle to kill her just to get her to torture another assassin was the stupidest idea. Couldn't she have just sent her a message via Konstantin?

The performances are still good.

chap, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 10:30 (three months ago) link

I just like the characters and performances. I'm not sure how believable the whole thing was right from the start.

clemenza, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 11:26 (three months ago) link

I don't care if it's not entirely believable, but I draw the line at nonsensical.

chap, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 11:55 (three months ago) link

I still think it's totally fun. Just caught up on all episodes. I mean all Bond movies are completely nonsensical but I kind of enjoyed a few of them.

I think we're the last two standing.

clemenza, Thursday, 9 May 2019 01:05 (three months ago) link

I am still highly entertained by the show. I get a lot of pleasure from the clothing and locations and random dialogue.

Yerac, Thursday, 9 May 2019 01:08 (three months ago) link

I mostly find the two leads plus Konstantin endlessly entertaining. Eve has the same pull on me as Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men: "He's a peculiar man. You could even say that he has principles. Principles that transcend money or drugs or anything like that. He's not like you. He's not even like me." (Also true of Hannibal Lecter, Norman Bates, etc.--it's nothing new.)

clemenza, Thursday, 9 May 2019 01:16 (three months ago) link

"it's nothing new"

clemenza, Thursday, 9 May 2019 01:16 (three months ago) link

Yeah, I think in the Hannibal thread I compared the highly watchable tension between Will/Hannibal with the leads in Killing Eve.

Yerac, Thursday, 9 May 2019 01:19 (three months ago) link

yeah I find it fine. thoroughly entertaining. actually I think this week's was better than the rest of the season, something needed to start happening.

akm, Thursday, 9 May 2019 03:32 (three months ago) link

will watch sooner or later but this thread is not making it sound necessary

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 9 May 2019 18:06 (three months ago) link

I'm liking it a lot, too. Though agreed on the Ghost plot being anticlimactic. Was expecting Ghost vs. Villanelle skillful assassinations instead of the wrap-up, and yes, hiring Villanelle was an odd way of getting them together and reestablishing her connection with Eve. Though with Konstantin breaking off from MI6, there wasn't a direct way of messaging Villanelle, unless I missed something.

Hoping Eve's recklessness has some blowback, but as her boss is aware and monitoring Eve, maybe it's being nurtured.

Jodie Comer does such a great job selling her character's moods. "BORING!" got a big laugh.

'I'm all across it,' she says. 'You can't get me out of any conversation about any part of the creative process.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 14 May 2019 14:54 (three months ago) link

for all the moaning about this season I do think the last few (including last nights) were some of the best episodes of the whole series.

akm, Monday, 20 May 2019 13:28 (three months ago) link

I liked last night's too--thought Villanelle was funny the whole way through, especially with Niko and Gemma. I like how Villanelle is now involved with someone who might be more of a sociopath than she is.

Last episode was probably the best of this patchy and often weirdly slow season. If that actually was the end (it's wasn't) then it wouldn't have been a bad one in a brutal way.

Got a hunch season 3 will be pure rubbish.

chap, Monday, 10 June 2019 10:30 (two months ago) link

I still haven't come back for Ep 2. Something felt off. First of all I forgot what the fuck was happening and the show did not cater for me at all. I know we're all bingers now but ... I'm not rewatching S1 just to prep. Sorry not sorry! Second of all I feel like... I've kind of seen enough of these characters? I love Sandra Oh but I don't love seeing her act helpless and crazy and borderline incompetent. I love Jodie Comer but what she does to the kid in the hospital felt out of character: paradoxically both too random AND too motivated. random because she's an assassin, not a serial killer; too motivated because i don't buy for a second that she cares about this kid's misery, much less that she'd go to such lengths to supposedly lessen it. Piecing together clues about what makes her tick was much of the pleasure of S1 - and I've kind of lost confidence that the show knows anymore, if it ever did.

Also, Parisian hospital security relaxing the rules for a second? BAHAHAHAHA

finished S2 out of a sense of duty, I guess? The predictable, thudding incompetence of Eve all of MI6 got really old, plus I don't really care for how much the show tries to get you to root for a child murderer. I strongly doubt we'll be fooled into picking this back up for S3.
