Quite right!

this show is kind of fascinating in a "gender is all performance!" way - everyone congratulating each other (incl the judges) on how well they achieve some kind of archetypal female-ness

four weeks pass...

Okay come on, I KNOW I'm not the only person on here watching.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 16:38 (six years ago) Permalink

I promise to start now.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 16:41 (six years ago) Permalink

Marilyn Monroe should've been in the bottom. She didn't do anything.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 16:48 (six years ago) Permalink

Yeah that was an epic flop. I like Ivy well enough but that made me go "Whuh?"

Jinkx, Alaska and Roxy were the best overall, but Jinkx just owned it period.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 16:51 (six years ago) Permalink

I like Ivy too and I think she was lucky she didn't have to lipsynch against Lineysha. I didn't expect her to do so well (but her Celia Cruz was unforgiveable).

Deep clusterfuck, that. Also what WAS Detox thinking.

I'll be caught up in no time :D

Shanté, you stay!

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:43 (six years ago) Permalink

Season 2 still the best so far, I think.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:43 (six years ago) Permalink

I just binge-rewatched season 3 over the weekend on Netflix and I might have to vote for that one. Then again I just like Raja a hell of a lot, so.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:44 (six years ago) Permalink

Yes for Raja and Manila. But the rest, not so interesting. Yara-Sophia maybe...

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:47 (six years ago) Permalink

It actually came down to the right final four I thought, Alexis was a character in her own right. But yeah Yara (Xara?) was next level.

I still haven't seen season four! For some stupid reason it's not on Netflix -- it was for about two seconds and then went away again without explanation. (Already know who won, obv., but I'd like to see it happen.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:49 (six years ago) Permalink

Wait what!! Can't you watch it on logo online or something? We can't in Canada but I thought you could in the US.
Season 4 was pretty good, although they tried to create too much unnecessary drama. But I'll let you see by yourself.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:58 (six years ago) Permalink

You can see the Untucked episodes from season 4 on the site but not the main shows. Since you can buy all the shows from iTunes maybe they want to go that route? Who knows!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:07 (six years ago) Permalink

Makes sense. If RuPaul had a dollar everytime she mentions iTunes...

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:13 (six years ago) Permalink

Hey, house payments are probably up there. (And I don't begrudge Ru ANY success and trappings.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:18 (six years ago) Permalink

I don't either. At least she's very upfront and funny about it.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:25 (six years ago) Permalink

Fun fact we learned during the All Stars season: Jujubee's real name is actually Airplane!

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:28 (six years ago) Permalink

Hahaha yeah I remember thinking "Wait, what?"

I also love that Manila's real name is the none-more-Minnesota Karl Westerberg.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:35 (six years ago) Permalink

Lol wow

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:58 (six years ago) Permalink

Almost caught up on S5 now yay!

Every single time Alyssa glams up for the runway all I think is JOAN COLLINS JOAN COLLINS JOAN COLLINS

I don't know why but I think I like Detox. Jinkx is great but I dunno if the unglam thing is going to hold out for her or not. I love her for it, but it could wear thin.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 22:53 (six years ago) Permalink

I will say this, have started following her on FB -- win or lose she seems to be having a blast and is booked for other live appearances and things and more this year already, so I like to think of her as winning already!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 23:13 (six years ago) Permalink

Meanwhile, it's a little surprising to see such a mostly white group at this point. Not that I think the show is biased, appears to be more luck of the draw season by season in terms of who survives.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 February 2013 02:28 (six years ago) Permalink

I do have to quibble with some of the assertions there -- while Sharon's success in 4 is great, in 3 Raja was more than a little disruptive herself -- as was Manila really; if anything Alexis was the one let go at the end precisely for being full pageant.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 February 2013 03:27 (six years ago) Permalink

I haven't watched all the seasons, but I don't get the impression that they are only seeking pageant or necessarily favoring that. And while I noticed the lack of "camp history" in the S5 girls, isn't there an argument that maybe a lot of queens are trying to let go of that, like that cliche of teens not wanting to know about older music? I mean, I'm bummed that they don't know who Little Edie is but maybe when they see Jinkxs win they go find out. And it doesn't mean they're any more terrible for what they don't know of their history. If anything, it's kind of fabulous that they all came to that same place *without* it.
I dunno. That article seemed a little too buttclenched.

Only three eps in (S5; no previous exposure to the show). Anyone care to rank the hottest queens out of drag? So far from S5 I'm into Lineysha and, oddly, Ivy.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:03 (six years ago) Permalink

xpost I just watched the S2 Snatch Game, Pandora's Carol Channing was hysterical, so good.

Lineysha's gorgeous. Ivy's not a crazy answer either, that bone structure really is something else. I was thinking about her terrible Marilyn and found myself wondering why the hell she didn't do Joan Rivers. Eh. Hindsight

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:14 (six years ago) Permalink

Yes she would've been a great Joan Rivers!

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:18 (six years ago) Permalink

Yeah, I know this is probably the exact rongest angle to take on the show, but I'm finding it very interesting navigating my impressions/levels of attraction to certain contestants when they're in drag vs. when they're not in drag.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:18 (six years ago) Permalink

Alyssa's *almost* attractive but it's like her lips are too big for her and she keeps tripping over them when she talks. Beautiful eyes though.

I was kind of expecting at least a few of the flashpoints to get straightened out or at least explained, but everything remained a muddle of walkbacks and qualifications.

For some reason, Netflix UK/Ireland hasn't put this episode up. I don't feel like I'm missing anything. This is almost always the worst episode of the season, and it definitely sounds like this time round it was more tedious than usual.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 25 May 2019 15:38 (three weeks ago) Permalink

I really enjoyed the finale this year. The video packages were way more fun than either the choreographed numbers or the onstage interviews of previous years. The final two queens had great outfits, and the right queen won on the day. I also enjoyed Vanjie's segment (missus).
The only thing I didn't get was the parade of alumni during Christine and the Queens' performance. What was the unifying theme there, or was it just "previous contestants we could get"?

trishyb, Friday, 31 May 2019 13:26 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Silky seemed so nervous and defeated the entire time she was on stage didn't she?

There was a real self-congratulatory tone to this season I just could not warm to. It's great that Ru can say a show by and for queer people has had all the Emmy nods but the show seems *straighter* than it has ever been and I think it has lost a lot of the magic it ever had.

boxedjoy, Friday, 31 May 2019 21:38 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Very RuPaul of the show to have a tribute to Stonewall without mentioning trans or Johnson/Rivera, which is pretty much 101 shit at this point? (yes, I know that what happened at Stonewall is disputed but still)

https://www.etonline.com/rupauls-drag-race-season-11-finale-5-things-you-didnt-see-on-tv-126030

I think it has lost a lot of the magic it ever had

My gf said last night that it had long since jumped the shark and on several levels that's hard to argue. (At least they didn't jump further last night.) But mostly it's just become so all encompassing -- it's been almost six months of weekly episodes and with Drag Race UK en route there's barely going to be any break here.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2019 22:09 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Anyway, from that link above:

Yvie's win had to be filmed twice, because her original final words upon being condragulated were, "Um, stay odd. And does anyone have a baby I can eat?"

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2019 22:12 (two weeks ago) Permalink

xxp well gee thanks Ru - next time say their names, explicitly mention trans folk, I promise you doing these things won't alienate the straight audience

anyway, I also could have done without the hour long clip package lead-in to the lip syncs - can't imagine actually being in the audience and having no choice but to watch, at least at home I could be distracted by any number of other things going on

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 31 May 2019 22:23 (two weeks ago) Permalink

I know they've always done those but it felt esp egregious this year

Veg as usual OTM about Yvie not gimmicking with reveals too hard. The flashing her panties kind of was, though, and so was the back of the mask, but they were both subtle and awesome and demonstrated the creativity she's been talking about this whole time. And put everyone else and their obnoxious stunting and tired reveals to shame.

Agreed that Silk look terrified onstage.

Stunned that Vanjie didn't win Miss C. Her video was the only remotely entertaining one. Actually Yvie's was as well. I just realized what she reminds me of: a box of syllables falling down metal stairs.

Despite my surprise, I'm quite happy with Nina getting More C.

Too bad about the baby eating being cut.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 1 June 2019 06:49 (two weeks ago) Permalink

The added sound effects during the stunts such as the crash noises timed to the death drops, they were so distracting and really highlighted how obviously pre-recorded the whole set-up was

boxedjoy, Saturday, 1 June 2019 06:55 (two weeks ago) Permalink

sure... but the finale’s always been pre-recorded since they first started doing it “live”. this isn’t really the format to be craving that kind of authenticity.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 1 June 2019 07:36 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Oh yeah 100%, I still miss the days where it was the last scene of the last episode in the same set etc and I think this season has been such an obvious construction of narrative that I'm just being sensitive to the artifice of that

boxedjoy, Saturday, 1 June 2019 13:35 (two weeks ago) Permalink

idk i think the in-studio finales were a bit anti-climactic. 3 judges & a few crew clapping for the winner always felt a little sad lol

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 1 June 2019 16:23 (two weeks ago) Permalink

the show seems *straighter* than it has ever been and I think it has lost a lot of the magic it ever had.

Several articles (and possibly people in this thread) have suggested that this the VH1 influence. They want things to be a bit cleaner. Which is why they don't do the puppets anymore, I read. No more glory holes.

trishyb, Saturday, 1 June 2019 19:12 (two weeks ago) Permalink

xpost Yeah, that always made Raja's win a bit anticlimactic. And made the season 4 reveal that there WASN'T going to be a final decision on the runway that much more of an honest surprise.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 1 June 2019 21:05 (two weeks ago) Permalink

I think the live ones are anticlimactic as well in a different way though. You can tell they film alternative results and so everyone's energy seems off

boxedjoy, Saturday, 1 June 2019 23:04 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Also all my boyfriend has spoke about today is how nobody at all was able to give Yvies mirrors a polish before she walked out and how distracting the greasy marks on them were
