Quite right!

this show is kind of fascinating in a "gender is all performance!" way - everyone congratulating each other (incl the judges) on how well they achieve some kind of archetypal female-ness

Welcome to my world of proses (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 21:10 (five years ago) Permalink

four weeks pass...

Okay come on, I KNOW I'm not the only person on here watching.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 16:38 (four years ago) Permalink

I promise to start now.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 16:41 (four years ago) Permalink

Marilyn Monroe should've been in the bottom. She didn't do anything.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 16:48 (four years ago) Permalink

Yeah that was an epic flop. I like Ivy well enough but that made me go "Whuh?"

Jinkx, Alaska and Roxy were the best overall, but Jinkx just owned it period.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 16:51 (four years ago) Permalink

I like Ivy too and I think she was lucky she didn't have to lipsynch against Lineysha. I didn't expect her to do so well (but her Celia Cruz was unforgiveable).

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 17:24 (four years ago) Permalink

Deep clusterfuck, that. Also what WAS Detox thinking.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 18:02 (four years ago) Permalink

um hi I just started watching season 5 online having never watched and omg I'm hooked

I'll be caught up in no time :D

Don't forget to watch Untucked, an essential part of this show!

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:30 (four years ago) Permalink

Yeah I just figured that out...gotta love these bitchy girls. MORE drag homework? *twists arm*

Very good. Join us, join us...

Shanté, you stay!

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:43 (four years ago) Permalink

Season 2 still the best so far, I think.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:43 (four years ago) Permalink

I just binge-rewatched season 3 over the weekend on Netflix and I might have to vote for that one. Then again I just like Raja a hell of a lot, so.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:44 (four years ago) Permalink

Yes for Raja and Manila. But the rest, not so interesting. Yara-Sophia maybe...

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:47 (four years ago) Permalink

It actually came down to the right final four I thought, Alexis was a character in her own right. But yeah Yara (Xara?) was next level.

I still haven't seen season four! For some stupid reason it's not on Netflix -- it was for about two seconds and then went away again without explanation. (Already know who won, obv., but I'd like to see it happen.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:49 (four years ago) Permalink

Wait what!! Can't you watch it on logo online or something? We can't in Canada but I thought you could in the US.
Season 4 was pretty good, although they tried to create too much unnecessary drama. But I'll let you see by yourself.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 21:58 (four years ago) Permalink

You can see the Untucked episodes from season 4 on the site but not the main shows. Since you can buy all the shows from iTunes maybe they want to go that route? Who knows!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:07 (four years ago) Permalink

Makes sense. If RuPaul had a dollar everytime she mentions iTunes...

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:13 (four years ago) Permalink

Hey, house payments are probably up there. (And I don't begrudge Ru ANY success and trappings.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:18 (four years ago) Permalink

I don't either. At least she's very upfront and funny about it.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:25 (four years ago) Permalink

Fun fact we learned during the All Stars season: Jujubee's real name is actually Airplane!

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:28 (four years ago) Permalink

Hahaha yeah I remember thinking "Wait, what?"

I also love that Manila's real name is the none-more-Minnesota Karl Westerberg.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:35 (four years ago) Permalink

Lol wow

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:58 (four years ago) Permalink

Almost caught up on S5 now yay!

Every single time Alyssa glams up for the runway all I think is JOAN COLLINS JOAN COLLINS JOAN COLLINS

I don't know why but I think I like Detox. Jinkx is great but I dunno if the unglam thing is going to hold out for her or not. I love her for it, but it could wear thin.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 22:53 (four years ago) Permalink

I will say this, have started following her on FB -- win or lose she seems to be having a blast and is booked for other live appearances and things and more this year already, so I like to think of her as winning already!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 23:13 (four years ago) Permalink

Meanwhile, it's a little surprising to see such a mostly white group at this point. Not that I think the show is biased, appears to be more luck of the draw season by season in terms of who survives.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 23:15 (four years ago) Permalink

that little edie impersonation was fuckin awesome in the last ep. too bad her fashion totally sucks.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 February 2013 02:28 (four years ago) Permalink

I do have to quibble with some of the assertions there -- while Sharon's success in 4 is great, in 3 Raja was more than a little disruptive herself -- as was Manila really; if anything Alexis was the one let go at the end precisely for being full pageant.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 February 2013 03:27 (four years ago) Permalink

I haven't watched all the seasons, but I don't get the impression that they are only seeking pageant or necessarily favoring that. And while I noticed the lack of "camp history" in the S5 girls, isn't there an argument that maybe a lot of queens are trying to let go of that, like that cliche of teens not wanting to know about older music? I mean, I'm bummed that they don't know who Little Edie is but maybe when they see Jinkxs win they go find out. And it doesn't mean they're any more terrible for what they don't know of their history. If anything, it's kind of fabulous that they all came to that same place *without* it.
I dunno. That article seemed a little too buttclenched.

3. Tatianna as Britney Spears
4. Jinkx Monsoon as Little Edie
5. Alexis Matteo as Alicia Keys

Only three eps in (S5; no previous exposure to the show). Anyone care to rank the hottest queens out of drag? So far from S5 I'm into Lineysha and, oddly, Ivy.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:03 (four years ago) Permalink

xpost I just watched the S2 Snatch Game, Pandora's Carol Channing was hysterical, so good.

Lineysha's gorgeous. Ivy's not a crazy answer either, that bone structure really is something else. I was thinking about her terrible Marilyn and found myself wondering why the hell she didn't do Joan Rivers. Eh. Hindsight

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:14 (four years ago) Permalink

Yes she would've been a great Joan Rivers!

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:18 (four years ago) Permalink

Yeah, I know this is probably the exact rongest angle to take on the show, but I'm finding it very interesting navigating my impressions/levels of attraction to certain contestants when they're in drag vs. when they're not in drag.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 February 2013 16:18 (four years ago) Permalink

Alyssa's *almost* attractive but it's like her lips are too big for her and she keeps tripping over them when she talks. Beautiful eyes though.

i feel that

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 4 February 2018 00:12 (two weeks ago) Permalink

I thought the challenge was a little bit disapointing after last year's great Herstory of the World and it had mostly to do with the material. Using RuPaul songs was kind of lazy on the writer's part imo. They could have done so much with these divas and as a matter of fact, the queen who didn't get a RuPaul song to perform had the best part. Although I have to give a shout out to whoever did the vocals cause they nailed everyone.

I thought Chi Chi's Patty Labelle was perfect and I don't know what the side eyes and embarassed smiles from the judges were about during Thorgy's number. I'm not sure why she was complaining about getting Stevie Nicks though, since she's a huge fan and it's obvious they chose the best divas to fit each queen. I agree with VG that her excuses on the runway probably helped her land in the bottom. I'm enjoying that there is still no real elimination strategy consensus among the queens so far.

LeRooLeRoo, Sunday, 4 February 2018 00:41 (two weeks ago) Permalink

yeah it’s better when it’s a free for all

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 4 February 2018 01:27 (two weeks ago) Permalink

This is playing on Comedy Central in the UK, and not only do we have to have five ad breaks per episode, but last night they put one of those ad breaks right in the middle of the diva routine. Like, just as Aja was being dragged around on a chair. FFS.

I sort of missed Trixie this episode. I feel like she's being overshadowed a little bit.

trishyb, Sunday, 4 February 2018 16:48 (two weeks ago) Permalink

We do get a fair bit of her as a talking head though, where she's been delivering the lulz pretty consistently.

Joanna NEU!some (Leee), Sunday, 4 February 2018 16:52 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Speaking of the UK, I hear Courtney Act won Celebrity Big Brother.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 4 February 2018 17:11 (two weeks ago) Permalink

I was watching Fashion Photo RuView w Raven & Mariah talking about Trixie’s Dolly look
Raven said “when I think of Dolly I do not think of a jumpsuit” and I nearly threw my phone out the window. Bitch Dolly literally LIVED in a jumpsuit throughout the late 70’s and 80’s. The Dolly Parton BARBIE came with a red jumpsuit
i know they are shady & boot queens they don’t like and I know Raven is not a Trixie fan bcz she hates her makeup. but it still bugged me lol

But: on the upside Mariah said Milk’s Celine Dion outfit looked like Chyna from WWE and I died. BEST BURN.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 4 February 2018 20:58 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Raven's makeup looked about as blended as Trixie's in that episode.

tokyo rosemary, Sunday, 4 February 2018 21:21 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Raven doesn't boot fair, and she knows it. And that's kind of part of the appeal I gather. That segment only works for me when Raja's there, not caring.

Tarr Yang Preminger Argento Carpenter (Eric H.), Sunday, 4 February 2018 21:22 (two weeks ago) Permalink

yeah I don’t like it as much without Raja. They have good chemistry.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 4 February 2018 22:02 (two weeks ago) Permalink

I also thought Raven didn't like Trixie, but she said 2 episodes ago that her makeup was always great and that she did one of the best makeup jobs out of all the queens from Drag Race because it's extreme but always blended. I think her comment about the jumpsuit was more ignorant than shady.

LeRooLeRoo, Sunday, 4 February 2018 22:23 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Also I could totally see Mariah Carey wearing that fringed bathing suit. It didn't have to be an exact replica of something she's worn.

Yeah I didn't get that much comedy from Shangela, but I guess aside from Bendela she went for it the most.

I felt bad for Trixie. She was clearly overthinking, but I can understand how she is putting too much pressure on herself. The expectations on her are high and she's starting to freak out for not living up to them. She was good last week though.

Shangela’s Game of Thrones is funny but there’s a scary undercurrent of “uh she really does think she’s Khaleesi, guys, you all better watch it”

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 17 February 2018 19:10 (five days ago) Permalink

Yeah that's a metaphor that's getting a little too played out here.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 February 2018 20:41 (five days ago) Permalink

Part of the reason Trixie & Katya ie Brian & Brian became close irl is becaise their personalities are very much fueled by anxiety & self-consciousness, struggling with weight or addiction, depression etc. And with Trixie returning again to the show that was the elephant in the room, even though she’s improved & is more confident now her subconscious mantra still had to be oh god what if i fail. And when it happened she spiked through the roof bcz she thought it was over.

My hope is that this moment for her was like Alaska’s breakdown in her first season, where that on-camera panic kind of breaks through the subconscious doubt & she can start embracing her full power & can stop carrying the selfdoubt everywhere.

sorry maybe that was a bit too fangirly “couch moment”

I don't know how I have managed to live this long without watching this show, but I just started this month and am on Season 5. One curiosity though, the term "fish, fishiness, serving fish" to imply femininity??? I had never heard this before. I'm a little surprised that it seems to still be widely used considering that they stopped pushing she-mail.
