Thought it was time for a new thread considering we are in a new decade and the other thread is quite long. We are also right at 100, which is unbelievable. I pretty much just kept the same name of the thread too. I also put in a few modifications and it does look a bit better.

Bee OK, Friday, 7 February 2020 01:08 (four years ago) link

BTW in the "Where to find the results thread" if you click on mookieproof links you will find each poll's full results list, where they exist and where he could find them.

Bee OK, Friday, 7 February 2020 01:12 (four years ago) link

had been thinking an Underworld poll would be good but i'm not sure at the moment when i'll have time to do a poll this year

i guess you can put me down for it but if someone else happens to have time before me and wants to run an Underworld poll they're welcome to run it instead

would also love to see that SFA poll happen at some point now that Guerilla is finally on NA spotify?

ufo, Friday, 7 February 2020 01:40 (four years ago) link

I'd run an Underworld poll, we'd do well to make it happen before the next Drift series starts up and produces another 12 hours of tracks and jams to wrestle with

Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Friday, 7 February 2020 02:09 (four years ago) link

lol i can't believe it's been 6 years since i signed up to do that herbie hancock poll

uncrut gems (crüt), Friday, 7 February 2020 02:16 (four years ago) link

I think Tori Amos was the last one of these I voted in, and that feels like five years ago.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 7 February 2020 02:38 (four years ago) link

glad to see this thread! thanks, Bee OK.

i'm gonna take my name off of the Billy Joel poll. i ran the track-by-track listening thread with the vague idea that we COULD roll from that into a poll or something, but in practice that thread had such a great turnout and discussion that i'm not sure we'd really gain much by doing a poll, even if everyone could muster it. the joy of ballot polls is in the discussion more than the ranking, and we had one hell of a discussion there. if someone else wants to run it i'd totally vote, though!

Doctor Casino, Friday, 7 February 2020 02:40 (four years ago) link

Is there a thread like this for all the various movie polls? I know the detritus thread each year has links to all the other ones, but I meant the genre and decade polls.

clemenza, Friday, 7 February 2020 03:24 (four years ago) link

I realize the movie polls don't follow back-to-back like the artist ones do, but it would be nice if there were some place where we could float ideas about movie polls and gauge interest (and let folks know they're going on). There's one I've been thinking about for a while, and it will be some time before I can even entertain the idea, but I wouldn't currently know how I would even go about seeing if people would be into it.

Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Friday, 7 February 2020 03:32 (four years ago) link

Great idea--start a thread. Anyone with an idea can test it out there--hopefully limited to whether there's interest or not, saving the this-belongs-no-it-doesn't arguments for the actual poll. I think a cumulative results thread would be useful too; some of those movie threads, like the comedy and horror, are really hard to load when you want to check something.

clemenza, Friday, 7 February 2020 03:40 (four years ago) link

Pitch your ideas for possible film polls here

Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Friday, 7 February 2020 03:46 (four years ago) link

"New Rose" shuffled up on my phone today and after I was through shouting along I thought a punk rock tracks poll would be fun. Limit it to the period 1974 (Ramones formation) to 1984 (Zen Arcade/Let It Be/Double Nickels).

Miami weisse (WmC), Friday, 7 February 2020 04:10 (four years ago) link

Would definitely participate in classic punk poll.

Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Friday, 7 February 2020 04:14 (four years ago) link

Can't wait for the "is this punk or is this new wave?" arguing.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 7 February 2020 04:14 (four years ago) link

yes lol

Dan S, Friday, 7 February 2020 04:16 (four years ago) link

We definitely need an Underworld poll

groovypanda, Friday, 7 February 2020 07:57 (four years ago) link

one thing with the underworld poll though would be figuring out where to draw the line with remixes etc., like "dark train" should probably be counted as a separate track to "dark & long" but does that work for all of them, and how do you handle something like "rez/cowgirl"?

ufo, Friday, 7 February 2020 08:05 (four years ago) link

if it were me, I'd exclude outside remixes, and combine votes for different versions / recordings / mixes / arrangements, but note votes for specific versions in the results. and probably make an eligibility chart so folks don't split votes from themselves.

Rez and Cowgirl I'd be inclined to list separately since they were such distinct recordings, made over a year apart, but roll together in results if voters demand.

Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Friday, 7 February 2020 08:33 (four years ago) link

i mean the "rez/cowgirl" mashup that's been a live staple and was on everything, everything. obviously you list "rez" and "cowgirl" separately but then do you allow votes for "rez/cowgirl" as a separate entity or not or combine the votes in some way?

i agree about excluding outside remixes and combining votes for the cases that are more directly alternate versions/recordings/mixes/arrangements of the same track, the edge case is the remixes they did themselves that are basically entirely separate works to the original (most prominently "dark train" but i think there's a few others out there too)

ufo, Friday, 7 February 2020 09:08 (four years ago) link

yeah there are five or so fully different Dark & Long "versions" that are sometimes listed as discrete songs / sometimes versions, and most of the dubno singles, plus Pearl's Girl and Born Slippy, have the same casual approach to taxonomy. The Born Slippys are as different as Dark Train from Dark & Long, while the Dirty x-s generally sound like separate recordings of the same song, and so do some of the other Darks. And some of the versions even have different mixes!

The band labelled them all as Song (Version) on the super-deluxe reissues, which is probably a tip worth taking.

C21st Underworld instead seemed to do all the rethinking and reworking off-record, playing some things live for years but waiting until they decided on a definitive version to release one (eg You Do Scribble). Drift finally went back to that early-'90s direction, what with the Necks and no-Necks Appleshines, remixing and re-arranging and re-editing things between single and EP and album, the different Soniamodes and Brilliants...

seeing how the voters prefer to think of Rez and Cowgirl is part of the fun!

Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Friday, 7 February 2020 09:56 (four years ago) link

i think one of the other dark & long "remixes" is actually a remix of one of the other dubnobass tracks even

my lineball instinct was to separate them like Rez and Cowgirl, but they really are exactly the same piece in different arrangements (and also reminiscent of when they'd do a Soft Mix and a Hard Mix on work-for-hire remix gigs around this time). I guess the only conclusion is not to do an Underworld poll

Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Friday, 7 February 2020 19:45 (four years ago) link

Just checked: counting the album and 7" version, I have 1 hour 55 minutes and 16 seconds of Dark whatevers. Let's just make them the ballot poll.

staggerlee hasn't posted since 2014. If no one objects (or if they just changed usernames), I'd like to step up for the Newpies poll.

Also: I was thinking about doing the Hendrix poll this September, in recognition of the 50th (not 51st) anniversary of his passing.

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Friday, 7 February 2020 21:09 (four years ago) link

As far as timing is concerned, keep in mind that the 2019 metal poll is still underway, so maybe wait until it's over? Otherwise these all sound like great ideas.

I'm thinking of offering my services to do the graphics for the eventual R.E.M. poll (it's 14th on the upcoming poll list)--that is, if rogermexico doesn't want to do them himself.

But here's the gimmick. I would ask all ILM'ers to send me random pictures in an R.E.M. aesthetic (whatever that is). Inscrutable objects, blurry photos you haven't deleted yet, chalk marks on a truck tire, a link to a drawing of some adzes, an old shopping list with a penguin scrawled on it. Or take a picture to illustrate a specific song--but don't tell me the song. I'll slap these bits together haphazardly, paste a wonky font on top and reap the acclaim.

If I do it, I'll probably have to start working on it now to get it done for the reveal sometime next year.

frogbs, Monday, 10 February 2020 19:10 (four years ago) link

hmmm not sure why it just made a new post but here's my thought - all those 'remixes' should be treated as a distinct track, since they're basically distinct tracks with almost nothing to do with the originals. if you combine votes then you wouldn't be able to put, say, "Dark Train" along with "Thing in a Book", nor "Tin There" with "Pearl's Girl", even though these tracks are very different from each other. as for "Rez/Cowgirl", idk how you'd want to handle it but I'd lean towards just not allowing it

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 15 February 2020 01:24 (four years ago) link

Here's a bold, bold suggestion while we're seemingly experiencing a lack of "I'm ready to go" bids...

I'd be happy to run a Prefab Sprout poll ASAP seeing there's some interest! (Assuming triggercut wasn't actually offering to run it, of course. I couldn't tell for sure.) I've favoured a quick turnaround on polls in the past and could again get it all done within a few weeks. I could even start immediately, but am mindful of the EOY metal poll still needing some space.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 15 February 2020 03:39 (four years ago) link

I'd definitely be interested in a Prefab Sprout poll.

No-one wants to veto the suggestion? triggercut? Okay, how does a rollout around the Monday March 9rd sound? (~3 weeks.) I'm guessing that would be well after the metal poll. I'll create a thread shortly if there's still no objections. (A thread with regular reminders to vote in the metal poll as first priority. LOL, I really want to see a Venn diagram now.)

i think shoegaze is a good one to do this year, as it will mark the 10 year anniversary of Moka's tracks poll. i won't redo tracks fully but have an idea for a side poll with those results.

Bee OK, Thursday, 27 February 2020 02:11 (four years ago) link

anyways, i think it's time for a new poll as the Metal poll is almost over and we can open a new poll as those results finish.

There are almost certainly further folks quietly observing, keen to eventually run things they suggested in, like, 2014. eg. the Nick Cave poll a few weeks ago!

There is no real order specified up top any more. I mean, I ran two in 2020 that were on the list for a matter of months, if that. BUT they were during periods where many weeks had passed without anyone else declaring a wish to proceed.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Friday, 15 January 2021 23:58 (three years ago) link

this board is a living animal that keeps evolving. DOOM could be next because of the circumstances. this thread sorts of has a handle on the timing, just say you want to run a poll and if no one objects then its a go. i don't like the idea of more than one at a time but i'm only one person. anyways, this is all mute until after the year end polls, this will start up again after that.

Maybe it's time to reinstate a running order extending several polls ahead. Might help in getting long-delayed polls firmly back on the agenda AND reduce stagnant periods, which have sometimes been quite protracted recently.

If I was in charge I'd actually just allocate a calendar month for each poll. Possibly starting March 1st, seeing as EOY polls seem to extend through much of Feb. And then a new poll from the 1st of each month. Easy. And no guesswork or waiting around. If a poll-runner was contemplating a weirdly bloated voting period or rollout, they'd know to expect the potential* distraction of the next month's poll, which would start regardless. :)

*very few are interested in every single poll, after all.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 16 January 2021 09:15 (three years ago) link

so you are saying it should read like this?

March: Hard Rock/Hair Metal - gr8080

if gr8080 is still around then he can say i'll do it or ask someone to take his place in running it?

April: Stephin Merritt - Gukbe

i would love another Gukbe poll

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 January 2021 01:26 (three years ago) link

Kinda. You'd presumably still need to negotiate who goes into given slots. I'm just wondering out loud whether an actual date rather than "whenever X and Y has finished" might improve turnaround and reduce stagnant periods.

It sometimes feels like the next poll to go ahead has been dictated a little too much by whoever happens to visit this thread in quiet periods. I mean, I've benefited from this myself, but I happily concede that I probably shouldn't have had the opportunity to run 4 polls in 2 years, typically on short notice, while sarahell and charlie rex (for example) have been waiting far, far longer. And seemingly mainly because I've been attentive to this thread when things have stagnated!

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Sunday, 17 January 2021 02:07 (three years ago) link

the problem has been that a lot of the people who signed up years ago haven't been around so 'everyone just waits their turn' stopped working years ago leading to the current system of people just run one when there's a gap and they want to do it

ufo, Sunday, 17 January 2021 03:13 (three years ago) link

Some names are surely inactive. But there are plenty of recent signs that others really *have* been waiting patiently. The aforementioned No Wave poll was suggested in 2014. Oor Neechy mentions being on the list under multiple aliases. And the last two 2020 single-artist polls had been on the list for absolutely ages: Nick Cave since '14, The Cramps since '16.

Looking back to the original thread it's striking how tight the operation was in the early days. Amazing.

not sure if WmC or Leee really signed up but there weren't a lot of things added this last year. if you want to be removed just let me know and i'll update.

bravo once again Bee OK for keeping up the list!

please mark Billy Joel unclaimed next time around --- i'm definitely satisfied with having run the career-spanning listening thread. i would say just take it off the list, but if someone else wants to do it, they totally should!

do it! they are really fun to run especially if you're a huge fan of said artist. i will say it's a lot of work but the rewards are worth it.

The Ballad of Mel Cooley (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 19 March 2021 20:17 (three years ago) link

I would follow results, would like to get into him. But wouldn’t be able to vote.

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Saturday, 20 March 2021 14:15 (three years ago) link

Voting just closed for the Todd Rundgren poll. What are best practices for rolling out the results? I have most of the ballots tabulated already, but will have to prep the results.

Foe instance, are there better days to roll them out (ie, weekdays versus weekends)? And how quickly? I know that I tend to like slower results with more time for people to weigh in and comment. But I also don’t want to drag things out or slow down other polls.

Thx in advance for suggestions.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 22 March 2021 22:38 (three years ago) link

However the pollrunner feels like or has time to roll them out imo, it's a feature not a bug that people run things differently.

(I always try to have my text and links and images ready at least a day at a time, and when possible to hold off on dropping a result until a bit of discussion on the previous result has had time to roll. Some people like to hit a certain pace of rollout and let the discussion fall where it may. Weekdays are usually better for engagement, but you'll probably catch some different commenters with a few results teased over a weekend.)

armoured van, Holden (sic), Monday, 22 March 2021 22:46 (three years ago) link

i'm always an advocate for slow rollouts. better to have some days that are light on discussion have it all go by in a blur - IMO!

i also don't think there's any issue with a results rollout happening simultaneous with another polls' voting period; the only thing that really necessitates Order And Timing (again IMO) is to avoid having multiple simultaneous *voting* periods, because making a ballot takes time and energy so they end up competing with each other and worsening all the polls. especially key for those of us who like to do some listening as we tinker intermittently with the ballots, or to haunt the voting thread for recommendations etc.

this honking's on a bobo (Doctor Casino), Monday, 22 March 2021 22:48 (three years ago) link

I hate doing fancy images to go with the rollout, so I was putting out Led Zeppelin results within an hour of getting out of bed after the deadline passed. Still took tracks ballots (well, one ballot) while I was rolling out album results.

Motoroller Scampotron (WmC), Monday, 22 March 2021 22:51 (three years ago) link

i have usually done a roll out when i got up on my day off, so around 9 - 10 AM ish on the West Coast. depending on how many you may want to roll out, i usually roll out about 20 - 25 per day and one result every 20 minutes or so. also have run things during the week but have some spill over until Saturday and even my Steely Dan one ran into a Sunday.

Bee OK, Monday, 22 March 2021 23:00 (three years ago) link

think i have been closer to 15 per day. so say, 15 per day and spread out over around 20 minutes each then it would be a five hour rollout. perfect, imo.

Bee OK, Monday, 22 March 2021 23:10 (three years ago) link

This is awesome feedback and advice, thanks, everyone!

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 00:40 (three years ago) link

alternative: five per day! or three! if i ever do a poll again that's where i'll be. i hate "missing" the rollout convo cause of work or w/e, but also you'll never please everybody, so whatever feels good to *you* is the best standard - you're putting in all the work after all!

this honking's on a bobo (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 11:42 (three years ago) link

Good input for me too--DOOM poll upcoming is my first. I was thinking to wait til right after the Rundgren rollout is done if that's alright.

i can probably run something starting next week if no one else is stepping up?

so throwing some ideas for polls around that aren't currently taken, is there immediate interest in any of these:
Destroyer?
Sufjan Stevens?
Afghan Whigs (& other Greg Dulli projects)?
Taylor Swift?
The Knife & side projects?
Roisin Murphy/Moloko?
Maxwell?

Kanye is one that should happen someday but i guess now's probably not a great time when he's at a career nadir and everyone's sick of his shit

i would really love to see the 2010s poll happen this year but that'd be too much for me alone at the moment

maybe it'd be a good idea to make a new thread, and have everyone register to run stuff again, with people giving a planned timeframe they'd hope to be able to run their poll. obviously giving people who are on the current list rights & priority if they're still around but clearing out people who are inactive these days? or just go through the current top of the list somewhat and get people to say when they're able to next run something idk

ufo, Tuesday, 18 May 2021 15:45 (two years ago) link

groovypanda, Thursday, 28 October 2021 15:40 (two years ago) link

You can’t have static type/info boxes over top a glitched image with how your making these? (How are you doing these?)

Also the SoundCloud dump had its moments - a few have made it into my regular rotation.

Sure can! Actually that’s a good suggestion and what I’ll probably end up with. I did a test with static info/data and the background doing the glitch and it was the best one but didn’t upload.

I'm sure this would have been asked before--I've probably asked it myself: has there ever been a music-videos poll? I'd love to do that. If anyone ever updates the list, change my entry from Wussy to music videos. Realistically, I'm so far down the list, it'll never get to me anyway. So keep videos in mind if there's ever one of those lulls where no one in sight steps forward. I'm retired, working part-time, so I can step in immediately.

I think it'd be great because they were just so omnipresent for at least a couple of decades...I don't think they are anymore, but it's not like I'm keeping tabs. Balancing the songs themselves and their videos would be interesting (I don't know if you could ever a really love a video if you didn't at least like the song).

Bee OK, Tuesday, 22 March 2022 05:20 (two years ago) link

I don't have one currently (work is heavy right now) but in the future I'd love to run a Country poll at some point (which I would definitely name Country-POLL-iton) if there was enough interest. Also if someone was willing to co-run it to help with the images as I have no idea how to do that sort of thing!

Will (kruezer2), Tuesday, 22 March 2022 21:08 (two years ago) link

Would there be anywhere near enough enthusiasm for a Randy Newman poll? I'd volunteer to collate that too, if there was.

("Was this prompted by the recent Bandsplain episode?" I hear you cry. Yes, I guess it was lol.)

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Monday, 28 March 2022 00:46 (two years ago) link

I would vote! I was thinking of starting a 12 Songs poll, because Newman has never had a poll for complete albums or any individual records... but that doesn't bode well for turnout for a career poll. I just had the ominous feeling that the next Randy Newman thread would be post-mortem.

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 28 March 2022 14:17 (two years ago) link

I'll leave the Newman suggestion to simmer for now.

But enough empty talk from me: having found definite support for a Broadcast poll in another thread, I wouldn't mind actually getting that up and running after Daft Punk. So late April, or thereabouts? Possibly a modest affair with a small pool of enthusiasts.

As always, vigorously quash this suggestion if you've been waiting in the queue since 2010 or whatever lol.

I'm really in the mood for that Broadcast poll right now. Could even maybe help to run it.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, how are you with images? I've usually kept that aspect pretty rudimentary but feel like this instance deserves a little more care.

This is probably a horrifying suggestion to actual designers, but I always find powerpoint is very easy to use to create cover/image art. You can add pics, shapes, text, etc in all manner of colors and fonts. When done, just highlight the entire field of items, right click, and select save as picture.

the board could really use a pinned threads feature

one option is putting deadlines in the thread titles but they always inevitably get extended which would require chasing mods to edit the title etc.

ufo, Friday, 26 August 2022 16:14 (one year ago) link

The NOMINATIONS & then VOTING thread for the 2010s poll were fairly constantly near the top of Site New Answers for a good few weeks so it seemed pretty hard to miss

nate woolls, Tuesday, 30 August 2022 22:23 (one year ago) link

Are there best practices on tabulating results captured someplace? Or someone with experience who could answer some questions or share a google sheet with me?

I had planned to just give 1 point to the lowest ranking track/album and the number of tracks/albums to the highest ranking track/album. e.g., in a 5 album poll, 5 points. Is this standard? I am struggling to back into the math used in some of the prior polls but it seems like higher point values were assigned. Not sure if that would make a difference mathematically though.

I also don't totally know how to handle partial ballots. In the above example, if someone only lists 3 albums, would you assign those albums 5, 4, and 3 points, OR 3, 2, and 1 point? Or something else?

Thanks!

Indexed, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 15:09 (one year ago) link

5, 4, and 3 in the latter case

Vance Vance Devolution (sic), Tuesday, 6 September 2022 16:54 (one year ago) link

here is that original doc: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-6UZjUc-eioPify1wTOMXe_dSsjOQ6pBu0ZjT0I7CCQ/edit#gid=0

I have always used that formula but added 10 point so number one would always get 50 points: 50, 36, 33, 30, 28, 26, 25, 24...You might need to start at 60 since this is a 40 track ballot.

Number ones always get the same score regardless of how many are submitted.

I have also done both, the same above scoring for albums and the simple 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 scoring but yeah all number ones got the 5 in that case.

Hope this helps.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 18:02 (one year ago) link

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 6 September 2022 18:09 (one year ago) link

looking at that spreadsheet I have never used the same number twice...so the number would keep going down for each placement: 25, 24, 23, 22, 21 20...

Bee OK, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 18:11 (one year ago) link

I will add you to the list

xpost

Bee OK, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 18:12 (one year ago) link

Thanks, Bee OK. So you're saying you effectively give a #1 a "bonus" of 10 extra points, yes? Do you do that for the Albums too?

Indexed, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 18:18 (one year ago) link

No, sorry when I say add 10 points I mean the overall scoring. So adding 10 means that the original starts at 40 points but I have always started at 50 points and then worked my way down.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 18:25 (one year ago) link

50, 36, 33, 30, 28, 26, 25, 24...

So number one does get 4 more points than number two which gets 3 more points than number three...

Albums too but the simple 5, 4, 3 scoring sort of works better for Albums.

Indexed, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 19:37 (one year ago) link

I always used a linear scale, which is what the EOY polls use, so for poll of ballot size 40, #1 gets 80 points, #2 gets 78 points, and so on, all the way down to #40 gets 2 points

ufo, Wednesday, 7 September 2022 00:37 (one year ago) link

There's a pivot table in the spreadsheet? No wonder I haven't been able to figure out how it works!

At some point you've got to sort the song list alphabetically so you can easily spot typos and such. Or paste the song list in an empty tab and then "remove doubles"--if any title appears twice, one of them has a typo.

i would totally run a sparklehorse poll right now if there is enough interest

i've got sparklehorse fever, and the only cure is to systematically go through the entire discography repeated times and administer a ballot poll

Karl Malone, Monday, 24 October 2022 21:56 (one year ago) link

That's a poll for which I could only really submit a ballot from one record (Vividixie) but would appreciate the rollout and enforced poll-result listening.

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Tuesday, 25 October 2022 15:21 (one year ago) link

yeah, i feel confident that you'd love the rest! i started with It's a Wonderful Life in high school, and only really listened to Viva closely for the first time a few weeks ago! since then i have listened to it many times. it rules.

one intriguing thing about a Sparklehorse ballot poll is that i really have no clue what the consensus is on either the album or which songs are the ones that everyone knows. the first couple albums have songs that sound like they should have been hits during a time when "alternative music" was still a thing. but then i'm youtubing and i see them making their "american television debut" on craig kilbourn, playing "it's a wonderful life", and you can just see that some of his most pop-friendly hits had been slept on

one reason NOT to do a Sparkhorse poll, though: maybe there just isn't enough. 4 albums (Viva, Good Morning Spider, It's a Wonderful Life, Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain), In the Fishtank with Fennesz, and Dark Night of the Soul (which I need to listen to more, it's hard to categorize). Some singles, EPs. But maybe that's not enough.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 15:37 (one year ago) link

you could add the two dancing hoods albums to a sparklehorse poll.

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 20:14 (one year ago) link

yeah...very diminishing marginal returns there, though, i think. i'm not a huge fan of what i've heard. they are definitely catchy and replacements like at some points, but i just finished watching the 1998 dutch documentary on youtube and he refers to them as "that pop band" or something like that and relays a story about how he boring he ended up finding that, how leaving that behind led to his first "good music"

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 21:36 (one year ago) link

yeah, they were a very different band. but they had their fans, and maybe there's a discovery or two still waiting to be found, or at least a connection to be made between his "that pop band" roots and what he went on to do? just a thought!

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 23:17 (one year ago) link

oh for sure! sorry, i didn't mean to seem like i was shutting it down. i would definitely include that, and if nothing else be interested in what everyone's favorite songs were from the pre-sparklehorse days! i'm still very much in learning mode and haven't listened to some stuff yet, so i'd be open to absolutely anything that involves linkous.

it's sad, because way back in the day, the way i learned about sparklehorse was through radiohead. the "wish you were here" collab. but the thing was, back then it was the audiogalaxy era for me, which meant lots of freely downloaded songs of unknown provenance and sometimes fakes. so when i heard "radiohead' doing wish you were here, with Linkous' voice, i immediately thought "false". now, of course, listening to it i hear that it's radiohead (or at least some of them?) playing instrumentally while linkous sings. to my warped radiohead-obsessed mind of the time, i could not fathom that thom yorke would let anyone else sing, other then himself. so when I heard heard Linkous' voice it just sounded like "fake-Thom" to me. good lord i was fucked up.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 23:27 (one year ago) link

i think i am just going to post a top 15 on a sparklehorse thread and be done with it

Since that one is suspended is anyone willing to run a poll or even taking over that poll?

Bee OK, Friday, 4 November 2022 02:22 (one year ago) link

The reason for the bump is that I am really hoping ILM can do one more of these before the year is out. If no-one steps in I might go ahead and start something next week. It won't be the Super Furry Animals tho because of the time and effort I'm going to put into that one. I'm not willing to do that one quite yet. The other one I was thinking about running is The Jesus and Mary Chain but not really in the mood for it at the moment. I do have a back up plan if no-one steps up here in the next few days.

I'm going to add The National to this list. I think a deep dive for this band will be fascinating. I'm not nearly up to date with them but seeing them live for only about an hour was great. It was a rooting festival type of thing with many bands. This poll The National (Poll) is what convinced me to add them. It won't be for years tho and if anyone wants to take the baton for me that would be fine too.

Chris L, Thursday, 23 February 2023 06:41 (one year ago) link

You do a great job of upkeep on this. The list is so insanely long now, I'd have something like a one-month window where people can check in and say "Yes, I still want to do this," and if you don't hear from someone, or they say they've lost interest, drop that from the list. You can delete me for Wussy, for instance--there wouldn't have been much interest in the first place, and by now there'd be almost none. I'd like to the Canadian poll, any time starting in March, and that's it.

clemenza, Thursday, 23 February 2023 14:58 (one year ago) link

I'm hesitant on removing anything from the list, unless asked by the original poster asking to be put in the queue but do understand the concern. I think you asked me to remove Wussy before but forgot. I will removed that from the list along with Chris L request.

Austin, I hear you and that poll will be a lot of fun but I'm on board for Super Furry Animals next as that one is in such high demand and I have put it off for too long. It will be done this year.

#117 is next, anyone ready to run a poll?

Was thinking about this, and it feels way too massive to tackle. How would people feel about a female-only country poll? If there's interest, I think I have time to run it but would need to get it done before the last week of March or wait until later in the year.

Would love to see the Herbie and Aphex polls this year, but it's probably going to be 2027 at this rate

octobeard, Friday, 24 February 2023 19:49 (one year ago) link

I mean, is there any percentage in keeping up a rigorous schedule at this point? I feel like unless it’s like there’s a chance 2 artist polls will have significant overlap it’s not gonna harm either one, and more often than not there’s no poll running at all. I’d say if you’re up for running a poll go for it and fuck the schedule, a remnant of a bygone era.

The land of dreams and endless remorse (hardcore dilettante), Saturday, 25 February 2023 07:03 (one year ago) link

polls happen irregularly enough now that i don't see the point in keeping a list of reservations when there's some that have been there for years and years - originally there were so many people who wanted to run polls that it made sense to have a schedule, but now we have the opposite problem. if someone wants to say 'i want to run X poll sometime in the next few months' then that's good but we probably don't need anything more than that.

ufo, Saturday, 25 February 2023 07:17 (one year ago) link

i like the idea of a Canuk tunes poll. it would be interesting to see how non Canadians view the stuff Canada has pumped out (not always penetrating far beyond our boarders).

groovypanda, Saturday, 25 February 2023 20:36 (one year ago) link

I'd certainly participate in a Canadian songs poll, but I'd be concerned that, with a relatively small number of voters with wide-ranging tastes, it might end up atomized - dozens and dozens of single votes for interesting artists from 70 years from all ends of the country. On the other hand, if we impose a limitation (such as "only underrated songs" or only from a certain time period), that's probably going to further limit the amount of ballots that could come in. So, a conundrum.

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 25 February 2023 21:51 (one year ago) link

I think there's a wealth of stuff for a Canadian poll. (Though I'll admit to being at least a decade out of touch.) I'd try to gently suggest that voters limit themselves to one or two Neil/Joni songs--that would be the biggest danger if left unchecked, I think, that it becomes Neil vs. Joni--but, obviously, vote for whatever you want.

clemenza, Sunday, 26 February 2023 04:05 (one year ago) link

i'm not very willing to do much of the rollouts though because trying to post when the board is active destroys my sleep schedule unfortunately

some other artists not already taken that i'd be open to running if someone will help with the rollout:
david sylvian
kraftwerk
parliament/funkadelic
destroyer
everything but the girl
fiona apple

I'm still happy to run the Erykah Badu one whenever it happens

oh lol i vaguely remembered it had been done before but couldn't find it at all, that explains it

ufo, Wednesday, 13 September 2023 14:04 (seven months ago) link

there hasn't been a poll in a while so if you want to run the erykah badu poll eric, you can whenever you want. i'll look forward to it

I am out for the next couple weeks, but could definitely begin one in October

xp sounds good then!

r.e.m. has been listed again forever because the methodology for that one (which kickstarted all these polls iirc) was kinda weird or something?

ufo, Wednesday, 13 September 2023 14:10 (seven months ago) link

Yah I ran the R.E.M. poll in a wonky experimental manner, and have long endorsed rogermexico's plan for a do-over. There's probably some discussion on the previous edition of this thread.

I've also long said Prince is due for a redux

would be happy to help with a prince redo as well

I volunteered for Stephin Merritt et al (in gukbe's absence) at a time when I was trying to properly absorb his 21st century output, but I didn't really manage that. I for one certainly wouldn't be dismayed if someone more enthusiastic endeavored to get it done with a bit more haste!

Feeling this. Handing the rollout component of 'my' last poll to a big fan in a timezone offset some 10 hours from own was pretty much the best thing ever lol

A while ago i was thinking a Morricone poll might be illuminating cause there's a ton of stuff then i thought "any song ever composed for a film" would be better (idk anymore) but with October approaching a horror movie themes poll would be the best kind. i don't have time to even follow it really but I def wanna listen to a bunch of horror soundtracks next month so idk maybe there are threads i could bump.

Deflatormouse, Thursday, 14 September 2023 01:09 (seven months ago) link

Morricone would be cool! Or maybe a looooong listening thread or something, given relatively few have heard more than a fraction of his output. Vigorous thumnbs-up to *any* soundtrack content.

We have an ILX EOY nominations thread: ILM's 2023 End of Year Tracks & Albums Poll / NOMINATIONS THREAD

It would be strange if "Canadian songs" were the end of the line for the genre/artist polls.

Would anyone be interested in trying to do a digital "draft"? Have heard a number of these done on podcasts in recent years and thought it could be fun to try here. Here's how I think it could work (and I'm open to suggestions):

- Draft-runner would pick a topic and create a thread -- year(s), genre, artist, scene
- First ~10-12 people to express interest would be included as participants but everyone could post if they want (could go larger but it could take too long to be fun...see below)
- Draft-runner would select ~5 categories -- Best Album, Best Song, Best Artist, Best Music Video, Best Industrial Metal EP (you can get as specific as you want, you get the idea)
- Draft participants would be assigned an order and would be "on the clock" to make a selection from the category of their choice by posting in the thread (suggest that each participant has 24 hours from the last participant's post to make their selection, otherwise this could in theory take months)
- Once all participants have made a selection from every category, the draft is over and we would then run a POLL to let ILM decide who had the best draft

We could also in theory run the actual draft over email, in a google doc, etc. if people think it would be more fun to keep the results a surprise until the poll/anonymize things.

I would come out of poll retirement to do a Frank Zappa poll if there was enough interest.
