an 'all one thread' view
― BRAVE THE AFRIAD (onimo), Saturday, 27 June 2020 15:43 (three years ago) link
How would that differ from SNA?
― DJI, Saturday, 27 June 2020 15:44 (three years ago) link
Because SNA is a list of threads not a single thread

it's all one thread, basically
we could completely remove the need for attempting to post in the correct one out of the 142 active US Pol/'rona/streaming threads

you mean, the true giant singular thread, omino?
i would love to see that, as an experiment. many have said it wasn't even possible
― time is running out to pitch in $5 (Karl Malone), Saturday, 27 June 2020 16:41 (three years ago) link
xp!
can't claim credit for the "all of ilx is one thread" idea, although i do believe in it
someone mentioned it earlier that day and i was just riffing off of it (sorry i can't remember details)
― time is running out to pitch in $5 (Karl Malone), Saturday, 27 June 2020 16:42 (three years ago) link
Yes, just need to work out how to manage replies. Maybe set it so anyone posting to the Singularity would only have their reply only visible there
― BRAVE THE AFRIAD (onimo), Saturday, 27 June 2020 16:44 (three years ago) link
ooh, that's an interesting idea. do i have this right: you can only see the mini conversation tree if you actually reply to the post in question? and once you do, it opens up the rest of the replies to that post (as part of the infinite thread)?
if that were the case, you wouldn't be able to read the responses to ideas before throwing your own in there, which would be very different from ilx and very interesting, too. though, i guess you could just reply "-" and then see the responses.
― time is running out to pitch in $5 (Karl Malone), Saturday, 27 June 2020 16:50 (three years ago) link
oh wait, haha sorry omino. now i'm realizing what you meant (it was very clear, i'm just amped up on coffee). i like the idea of singularity-thread only posts too, heh

Maybe a board level single thread would be better because I dont think a million Beatles posts mixed with a million Trump posts would be good for anyone.

you could make it a user preference or menu link so everyone can retain their normal multi thread ILB but you have the option for soupview
― BRAVE THE AFRIAD (onimo), Saturday, 27 June 2020 18:22 (three years ago) link
Aimless already wrote a book and it is in my pile of ilxor books to read
― covid coronenberg (wins), Saturday, 27 June 2020 18:22 (three years ago) link
Re a single thread, I think a better idea for ilx would be for Americans to exercise a tiny bit of self-control when it comes to starting a new thread about the current neverending election that is identical to the 243 extant threads on same
― covid coronenberg (wins), Saturday, 27 June 2020 18:26 (three years ago) link
you think that would be easier than reprogramming an entire message board?
― BRAVE THE AFRIAD (onimo), Saturday, 27 June 2020 18:29 (three years ago) link
The purpose of new threads is to avoid unloadably long threads
― zombeekeeper (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 27 June 2020 19:32 (three years ago) link
but the purpose of cars is to avoid long walks, and yet we all sit still within them together on the way to work all the same

btw, this is closely related to the thread about how the mods did 9/11 (obviously true, it's more about why they did it)

We used to have One Thread, it was called Site New Posts and only mods could see it. It was technically problematic - it’s hard to do the security thing and make sure only 77 members see 77 posts on there. I loved it though, it’s a great idea.
― stet, Saturday, 27 June 2020 22:03 (three years ago) link
Pretty sure not reading the thread before you post would not be an innovation for a significant number of ilxors
― i have no scampo and i must scream (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 27 June 2020 22:16 (three years ago) link
I was thinking, there should just be one long thread
― below the mendoza (rip van wanko), Saturday, 27 June 2020 22:19 (three years ago) link
ILX should have a virtual Tip Jar, because tipping should be encouraged whenever a service is rendered. Then each registered user could have a running total of how much they've tipped ILX, just like each of us has a total of how many posts we've made.
