Rare weekend closing date because of the holiday.

RIP Say Hey Kid (Bee OK), Wednesday, 26 June 2024 17:48 (two weeks ago) link

Hopefully there is something for everyone on here?

happy to see Power Trip on there. didn't think i'd be able to vote for anything! that is one really long list of things i would never listen to. i still listen to that Power Trip album. do people here still listen to the stuff on the list now or were they just of-the-moment zeitgeist-y. not that there is anything wrong with zeitgeist-y.

That Power Trip album is great. I also still listen to that Laura Marling album.

Voted Algiers, though my favorite of the year was Land of Talk's Life After Youth. Matt Pond PA, Minco Eggersman, Los Campesinos!, Racquet Club - other 2017 favorites.

At the time, it was Slowdive followed by Migos, but Brat made me listen to Pop 2 again, and that one seems an even bigger masterpiece today. So probably that.

Aromanticism is a classic

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 26 June 2024 18:22 (two weeks ago) link

the ooz.

only contenders (not listed here) would be nick hakim's the green twins and julia holter's in the same room (which i want to say something about but it's a tangent so that's what's behind the hidden tags).

if you approach her music as more of a "CLASSICAL IDEAL" itsr contains many of the best recordings of those songs. i prefer all of the recordings on itsr to their initial recordings. on some days i think of it as her most representative work and nothing if not a flawless overview of her pre-aviary work. it's her pink opaque or her all of this and nothing or her louder than bombs or her the eagles greatest hits or i think you get the point. it absolutely has ahold of my heart.

Kendrick. The cover alone nails the mood of 2017.

It took me a couple of years to get around to it, but that Jlin album is fantastic. Power Trip are good but even before their singer died I always felt like people hyped them harder than they deserved. Like, were they really that much better than any other retro thrash act? (I still listen to Fueled By Fire and Merciless Death albums from the 2007-8 retro thrash wave.)

otm, voted Gas

Voted Paramore, which is close to a no-skips classic for me. Kendrick, Jlin, Kelly Lee Owens, Vince Staples all favorites too.

there's one great song on the power trip album imo ("swing of the axe") and i can leave the rest.

funny that 'where are we going?' made this list, it's only an ep but it's completely gorgeous and i'm such a huge octo octa stan and she's the best deep house producer ever, so that

war on drugs

brimstead, Wednesday, 26 June 2024 20:41 (two weeks ago) link

I'm looking for a new place to live and wanted to throw on an album from this list. I played Octo Octa but it has nine songs on it and is not an EP?

True. But also that might have been my favorite song of that year.

Voted Alvvays, which is the one I still listen to the most. Alvvays albums age really well.

My head says Kendrick but my heart says Octo Octa. Went with Octo Octa, that record has a lot of nostalgia attached to it now.

agree on the minor year - this was the top 5 from my 2017 albums ballot, I am not sure I have listened to the Penelope Trappes album since then

Penelope Trappes - Penelope One
Wednesday Campanella - SUPERMAN
Lau Nau - Poseidon
Kelly Lee Owens - Kelly Lee Owens
Pauline Anna Strom - Trans-Millenia Music

that's that me: a Viking (seandalai), Thursday, 27 June 2024 09:55 (two weeks ago) link

Wolf Alice's Visions of a Life is painfully absent, but the Paramore album was enormous for me that year too.

peace, man, Thursday, 27 June 2024 13:44 (two weeks ago) link

I feel like I was in a bad funk this year and just not listening to music. My favourite things that I can remember were the b-side "Eve" by Converge and the incredible Lingua Ignota album (which I didn't hear until 2018, though).

jmm, Thursday, 27 June 2024 14:03 (two weeks ago) link

I don't think I'm voting for it here but Hot Thoughts might be my favorite album by Spoon these days.

RIP Say Hey Kid (Bee OK), Saturday, 29 June 2024 00:59 (one week ago) link

And that in itself sort of blows my mind...

RIP Say Hey Kid (Bee OK), Saturday, 29 June 2024 01:00 (one week ago) link

One good thing about these long open windows is being able to play some albums from this list. Some albums I have heard before and some I haven't.

This brings me to this xx album. I remember really liking it at the time but felt sort of uninspiring this time around. When "On Hold" came on it was finally something I really loved. Sort of makes sense that this was their last album.
