I don't think I screwed up, nice.

ILM got the winner extremely right this year

Rich E. (Eric H.), Friday, 14 June 2024 22:43 (two months ago) link

Skeleton Tree ended up my surprise favourite at the time - still the only album by him I really care for - but I'd find it difficult not going for Blackstar

30 The 1975 - I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It

Such a killer year. Blackstar an easy pick. Some great records I didn’t see - Vektor Terminal Redux, ulcerate- shrines of paralysis, Astronoid - Air, Inter Arma - paradise gallows, Moon tooth - Chromaparagon, Rob Crow’s Gloomy place

oh jeez yeah this one too

ivy., Saturday, 15 June 2024 01:10 (two months ago) link

wow, that's a really great year. The opening seconds of that Oranssi Pazuzu album were like nothing i'd heard before.

Black Star

Cow_Art, Saturday, 15 June 2024 01:26 (two months ago) link

KING, Shura and Solange are the three I go back to the most. Crying, Britney, The Avalanches, Mitski, Maxwell and Rihanna all still sound great too. Strong year.

kitchen person, Saturday, 15 June 2024 03:42 (two months ago) link

yeah this year rocks. Blackstar I actually think is Bowie's best album. the King Gizzard one rocks. Underworld's surprisingly strong. The Avalanches comeback I actually liked more than the first album. but nah the KING album still feels like pure magic I gotta side with that

frogbs, Saturday, 15 June 2024 03:45 (two months ago) link

Yeah, it’s KING

Rich E. (Eric H.), Saturday, 15 June 2024 04:16 (two months ago) link

Blackstar is an incredible thing, so it has to be that but the Tribe album is fantastic also.

kraudive, Saturday, 15 June 2024 18:12 (two months ago) link

Blackstar my pick, but also

Beyoncé - LemonadeA Tribe Called Quest - We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service

Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker

Anderson .Paak - Malibu

PJ Harvey - The Hope Six Demolition Project

Sturgill Simpson - A Sailor's Guide to Earth

Miranda Lambert - The Weight of These Wings

(of the ones I remember best)

dow, Saturday, 15 June 2024 18:16 (two months ago) link

And if I had to cut back further, to a Top Five, would be Bowie, Tribe, Cohen, Harvey, Lambert.

dow, Saturday, 15 June 2024 18:19 (two months ago) link

I really, really don't understand what people hear in that Tribe album, and I say that as someone who was around when they broke out and loved their first three albums. For me this is Bowie in a walk — his first great album in 35 years, and then gone? Amazing.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Saturday, 15 June 2024 18:43 (two months ago) link

tribe was back after over a decade with an album that stands up to their best work. plus, phife passed

King, Maxwell or Noname.

Am I going mad? Can't see anything called Crying on the list!

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Saturday, 15 June 2024 20:02 (two months ago) link

Fuxache, ignore me (Beyond the Fleeting Gales innit).

don’t necessarily think jeffery is thug’s best front-to-back release anymore, but gonna vote for him in recognition of his period of excellence around this time

the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Saturday, 15 June 2024 21:03 (two months ago) link

Is 8 years enough time for nostalgia? I think I just felt it. Emily's D+Evolution is so awesome.

Voting for the second best Parquet Courts album. (This year's not as good as 2015.)

I went with Tribe.

Another glaring omission is Ariana Grande Dangerous Woman. Not to mention Weyes Blood, The Radio Dept., Suede and even that B-side collection by Carly Rae Jepsen.

I'm going to play that Crying album as I have never even heard of them before.

Love seeing some old faces in these threads. Hi!

RIP Say Hey Kid (Bee OK), Thursday, 20 June 2024 00:37 (two months ago) link

We lost both David Bowie and Prince this year, still hard to believe they happened so close to each other. I thought we lost Tom Petty this year too but it was Leonard Cohen. I played this album today and it's so moving, such a profound piece of work.

George Michael at Christmas too, during what is still probably the worst my depression has ever been. Not a good time.

genuinely difficult choice.

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Friday, 21 June 2024 19:42 (two months ago) link

I was talking about - You Want It Darker above in case that wasn't clear.

I did get a chance to hear Crying and was shocked that the lead singer is female, don't know why that surprised me so much. It was fine and would probably grow on me if I listened to it a few more times.

RIP Say Hey Kid (Bee OK), Saturday, 22 June 2024 00:55 (two months ago) link

This was difficult but in the end I went for A Moon Shaped Pool to give Radiohead some love in this thread.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 24 June 2024 00:01 (two months ago) link

Late vote for untitled unmastered., which I think is up there with the great outtakes/odds'n'ends collections.

It’s certainly the Kendrick LP I like best.

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 24 June 2024 00:28 (two months ago) link

wanted to give Lemonade the vote but "Daddy Lessons" has always been a massive low point on what is practically a perfect album.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Monday, 24 June 2024 05:01 (two months ago) link

voted for huerco s, for those of you who have never is a delightful summertime ambient record

I voted the 1975 in the end

RIP Say Hey Kid (Bee OK), Tuesday, 25 June 2024 02:05 (two months ago) link

i see the Grammy voters that felt slighted trying to correct matters.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Tuesday, 25 June 2024 06:36 (two months ago) link

I didn't get around to this thread before now but for me it's The 1975 followed by some mixture of David Bowie, Young Thug, Maxwell, KING, Miranda Lambert and maybe Rihanna.

Lots of other great albums here though, including the surprisingly strong Britney album.

100% agree, the best things that happen on this board, tho they are becoming fewer and far between.

POO polls are unique as you can only pick one. Leads to interesting results even if it's a bunch of lurkers.

RIP Say Hey Kid (Bee OK), Thursday, 27 June 2024 04:28 (two months ago) link

For example

Top 5:

David Bowie - ★ [Blackstar]
KING - We Are KING
A Tribe Called Quest - We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service The 1975 - I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It
Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
Huerco S. - For Those of You Who Have Never (And Also Those Who Have)
Young Thug - JEFFERY
