Kim & Jessie or Agoraphobia, though I'm so pleased to see Dirty Dancing show up here I'd maybe go with that.

I'm splitting the vote by going for "The Rip". Now, if "Magic Doors" were on here, ...

nxd, Thursday, 9 February 2017 09:42 (seven years ago) link

I don't know a lot of these tbh, the very late 00s marked a relative lack of enthusiasm for new music of me. Probably one of the Portisheads. Dunno why Golden Age is in there, there are like five better songs off that album.

chap, Thursday, 9 February 2017 10:56 (seven years ago) link

Pour one out for duffy. 2007 had a lot of stuff I liked as a teenager, have fond memories of but would never listen to again but this year is rough. Remember the enthusiasm for glasvegas and elbow in music mags baffling me.

devvvine, Thursday, 9 February 2017 11:01 (seven years ago) link

Still love Wearing My Rolex though. Was pretty much the blueprint for making a great grime crossover for a good number of years.

devvvine, Thursday, 9 February 2017 11:05 (seven years ago) link

Way better than 2007, like way way better. Hearty lols @ Glasvegas.

Will be one of these: The Rip, Kim & Jessie, Agoraphobia, Nothing Ever Happened, Fever Ray.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 9 February 2017 13:44 (seven years ago) link

There was so much hype for Glasvegas when they first appeared. I couldn't believe how bad they were when I first heard them. Possibly the worst landfill indie band of the whole decade.

Voted for Ready For The Floor ahead of The Rip, Machine Gun, Blind and L.E.S. Artistes. I would have voted for Happy House if it had been included.

2008 is one of my favourite years for music ever. So many brilliant albums released that aren't all represented here. Goldfrapp, Solange, Erykah Badu, Cut Copy, Lindstrom, Wild Beasts, Robert Forster, Jazmine Sullivan, Sebastien Tellier, Ne-Yo, Air France, School Of Seven Bells, Lykke Li, Danity Kane, Ladyhawke, Grace Jones etc.

kitchen person, Thursday, 9 February 2017 15:08 (seven years ago) link

El Guincho, Azeda Booth, the Mae Shi, Parts & Labor, High Places. Yeah, one of my favorite years as well. But hey, Glasvegas and Mystery Jets were bands that existed as well.

Frederik B, Thursday, 9 February 2017 15:24 (seven years ago) link

'Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping' was this year as well

devvvine, Thursday, 9 February 2017 15:32 (seven years ago) link

My favorite song from this year was Wild Beasts' "This Is Our Lot," but in lieu of that, bring on "In The New Year"

Pretty certain Two Dancer's was 09, but yeah thats probably still my favourite song they've done.

devvvine, Thursday, 9 February 2017 16:00 (seven years ago) link

ah yes, good point

ridiculous perm ban decision (voodoo chili), Thursday, 9 February 2017 17:15 (seven years ago) link

At the time I would have vote Blind but have heard it too many times now. So Poker Face, which I've heard even more times but still sounds great.

skip, Thursday, 9 February 2017 22:05 (seven years ago) link

I used to loathe Poker Face. It's still not my favorite but it's also not the bane of my existence anymore.

Voted Machine Gun because duh

Probably not voting for it, but I honestly think that's a great lyric.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Friday, 10 February 2017 00:11 (seven years ago) link

That would just prove his point, don't you think?

Frederik B, Friday, 10 February 2017 00:25 (seven years ago) link

My old man is in a, ah, senior choir and they do a version of that. I mean, it's a fucking awful lyric, but somehow the massed voices of 20 arthritic elders adds some poignancy.

Bee OK, Monday, 13 February 2017 19:54 (seven years ago) link

White Winter Hymnal's actually a lot better than I remember it to be. Pretty harmonies, a simple melody, excellent production.. suddenly I feel bad for making all those flannel/beard jokes. Meanwhile "one day like this" really sucks

josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 13 February 2017 20:58 (seven years ago) link

Oh, I kinda like One Day Like This :( It's not the ninth best song of any year, of course, probably shouldn't be in the top thirty, but I like the sentiment. And the shamelessness. It's like a good Coldplay-song, which I always love, and if Coldplay ever made some I would like them as well.

Frederik B, Monday, 13 February 2017 21:25 (seven years ago) link

My top 3 of Coldplay songs is something like One Day Like This, Everybody Changes and Starlight. And I don't like either band that much.

Frederik B, Monday, 13 February 2017 21:26 (seven years ago) link

that's fair! I think I was just surprised that it placed so high cause i'm not really a "these lists are wrong, overthrow the canon" kind of person.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 11:47 (seven years ago) link

There's a single clipped hi-hat towards the end of The Rip that always makes me really want a house beat to kick in over the outro.

32 3294 Franz Ferdinand - Ulysses

Probably the worst song to appear on any of these lists.

― Mr. Snrub,

Hmm, I'm not sure about that. 34 3596 Glasvegas - Geraldine

kitchen person, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 14:17 (seven years ago) link

I've changed my mind after listening to One Day Like This again. It's absolutely great and deserved more than one vote. The clash between the rhythm and the floating strings, Coldplay could never do something like that, they've never been able to handle two ideas at once.
