finally back and wanted to put a positive happening in 2001 instead of something negative. though i'm still really, really bummed lately.

Bee OK, Thursday, 17 November 2016 01:53 (seven years ago) link

Clint Eastwood. constant rotation on MTV. a lot of these i remember vividly playing in the background of the aftermath of 9/11 thru the rest of the year. could've easily voted for Chop Suey!, Izzo, The Middle, Get Ur Freak On, Last Nite, or Island in the Sun (no Hash Pipe?). So many others on here are etched in my mind forever. Strange days.

"Crystal" was a helluva comeback.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 17 November 2016 03:34 (seven years ago) link

stopped browsing at the first entry and voted.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 17 November 2016 03:50 (seven years ago) link

Pagan Poetry, because "I love him, I love him, I love him, I love him" might be my favourite moment in music ever.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 17 November 2016 09:07 (seven years ago) link

Digital Love of course. 'Why don't you play the gaaaaame?'

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Thursday, 17 November 2016 10:39 (seven years ago) link

Surprises myself by not voting for the Weezer track. Even though green album was my favorite record of that year, Island in the Sun was one of the lower-ranked songs for me.

The best out of these are Clint Eastwood, Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground, and Party Hard. It was impossible for me not to vote for the latter.

how's life, Thursday, 17 November 2016 11:29 (seven years ago) link

Feel like Fischerspooner - Emerge is the quintessential 2001 song for me. Looks good, feels good too, even today,

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Thursday, 17 November 2016 11:40 (seven years ago) link

Awesome list. tons of classics. 2001 was great.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 17 November 2016 13:16 (seven years ago) link

Two absolutely perfect songs here, Party Hard and Digital Love. Have to go with AWK here

frogbs, Thursday, 17 November 2016 13:50 (seven years ago) link

Good list. Kylie, Aaliyah, Squarepusher, Bran Van 3000 all great songs. Pagan Poetry too, of course, but to me it feels a bit out of place, isolated from Vespertine.

Voting Digital Love, because c'mon.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 17 November 2016 13:53 (seven years ago) link

The Middle, Party Hard, Pagan Poetry

jmm, Thursday, 17 November 2016 14:18 (seven years ago) link

These song lists have been soooooooooo much better than the concurrent album lists.

Voting Kylie

btw it's "la la" not "na na"

niels, Thursday, 17 November 2016 15:37 (seven years ago) link

Whoops, my mistake.

Probably gonna vote Kylie too, but ahh so many choices. Secretly hoping that Party Hard makes the top 3

Romeo is such a great song, but then again so are moer than half of these

Loads of good stuff, might go for Roots Manuva.

this playlist is fantastic, 2001 was a great year for music.

Bee OK, Saturday, 19 November 2016 02:34 (seven years ago) link

Digital Love vs Emerge for me. Crystal, We Need a Resolution, Romeo and Pagan Poetry are all up there too. This is a great list.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 19 November 2016 04:58 (seven years ago) link

'Digital Love'

It's nice of this poll to remind me that The Strokes were a thing, though... and now I can promptly forget about 'em again!

Chop Suey! because the chorus lyrics are all time ridiculous

The verse lyrics are no better!

Lots of great songs here and voting "New Slang" to make sure it gets a vote.

the future is now, Sunday, 20 November 2016 01:03 (seven years ago) link

Torn between Missy, Kylie and Bjork so went Pagan Poetry purely on the basis of those bass synths and the goosebumpy "I love him" outro section.

Surprised "Bootylicious" is so low. Love both Daft Punk and Basement Jaxx songs and of course Missy, but I'm voting for "Emerge" for making me go out dancing again.

LeRooLeRoo, Monday, 21 November 2016 04:39 (seven years ago) link

"Bootylicious" no match for every single Strokes song, apparently.

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Monday, 21 November 2016 04:49 (seven years ago) link

In the end I had to vote for Clint Eastwood.

Bee OK, Monday, 21 November 2016 19:21 (seven years ago) link

Hearing the first line alone, "I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad", rockets me into deep depression. The downward spiral in Albarn's pronunciation of "happy" makes me deeply miserable. What is so great, 15 years on, about that song?

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 21 November 2016 19:38 (seven years ago) link

I'm genuinely curious why anyone like that song. To me it's not just boring, but aggressively ugly and stupid.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 21 November 2016 19:45 (seven years ago) link

i hate it too bruv but https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qualia

nice

niels, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 06:33 (seven years ago) link

at the end of this series, it would be kinda neat to see which songs have gained the most appreciation over time vs which have lost the most (roughly measured by subtracting the poll result ranking from the acclaimed music ranking; for this poll, "Last Nite" was ranked #2 on acclaimed music but tied for #17 on this poll, so it would get a score of -15, while "We Need a Resolution" was ranked #20 on acclaimed music but #4 here, so it would get a score of +16).

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 06:52 (seven years ago) link

all of these scores could then be multiplied by .134314 to determine the ultimate score of all time ranking, which of course would feed into

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 06:53 (seven years ago) link

interesting idea, if you take into account ties and all that. i have no problem with someone doing that at the end, those numbers would be interesting.

happy Thanksgiving to you Americans, will continue this in a weeks time.

Bee OK, Thursday, 24 November 2016 01:43 (seven years ago) link

to answer your question Le Bateau Ivre, it was the best stoner song from the year. i had the lyrics wrong, it thought it was all positive and said "I'm happy, I'm feeling glad. I've got sunshine in my bag. the future is coming on" Obama and the feeling of hope in America...

Bee OK, Thursday, 24 November 2016 03:55 (seven years ago) link
