Thanks, your modness. A deeply regretted lapse in judgment. I have been kinda haphazard lately due to unforeseen personal turmoil but will strive to be more betterer in future.

It's not urgent, but if a moderator can, maybe you can help me to de-uglify the Canadian Pop Results thread by removing these two posts:

Hello, mods. Please can someone change the title of the Help me with Bollywood thread to "Help me with Bollywood and Indian cinema in general"? Thanks very much.

waving my small flag that says "when a mod edit changes the context of seventeen years of posts it would be good from both an information management and a UX perspective to note the change and date in the first post, as well as respectful to the posters"

(as a completely separate question, iirc there was previously a policy that thread title edit requests ought to come from the OP, no? this specific title change is obv practical and sensible, just asking if that shift in policy was discussed (or I imagined it): imo it's a bad precedent for randos to get mods to change other peoples' posts via a single request)

“randos”

brimstead, Sunday, 4 June 2023 19:32 (eleven months ago) link

I usually try to indicate that the change is new - for threads that become RIP threads I'll often add that with the date but I don't think I've ever added a date for anything else, it's more likely to be a parenthetical or a 'now featuring' addition. Honestly, I'm with sic on disliking the change to context of the first posts in a thread, and I'd rather people started new threads if the topic veers off wildly, but I understand why that doesn't always happen. I'll definitely consider adding a moderator comment in either the title or first post from now on.

As for only changing when the original poster requests it, I think that depends on the age of the thread. If it's a new thread then absolutely, but if it's over a decade old and has been used regularly for discussion of an additional topic, I kind of feel like it's fair to change it for search/usability purposes. I was happy to add Only Connect to the University Challenge thread title, for example, because that's where the discussion happens - I have no idea if it was the threadstarter who asked for it but it was definitely for the benefit of the regular users of that thread.

emil.y, Sunday, 4 June 2023 21:36 (eleven months ago) link

yes, threads adding "[RIP June 2022]" or "[now also featuring Keith Sweat solo material]" is a clear contextual change! - I originally cited RIP additions as a fine precedent but lost the post on zing

(brimstead: not suggesting that trishy is not a poster in fine standing - if I came onto a Roxy thread seventeen years after it started and then asked for and immediately received an alteration to Roxy's words, I would also be a rando in that circ)

serving bundt (sic), Monday, 5 June 2023 07:00 (eleven months ago) link

so are we adding RIP 2023 to the Does This Dog Look Like David Crosby thread? y or n?

sarahell, Monday, 5 June 2023 09:25 (eleven months ago) link

emil.y, Monday, 5 June 2023 15:15 (eleven months ago) link

David Crosby did. I want to think the dog is immortal

sarahell, Monday, 5 June 2023 18:03 (eleven months ago) link

but seriously -- would it be possible for a mod to add hidden text tags to this post and the subsequent post by the same poster around the content referring to #metoo stuff?

Posts you had second thought about and decided not to post - put them here

sarahell, Monday, 5 June 2023 19:00 (eleven months ago) link

I've sent soref an email and hidden the first post with a content note. I'm a bit unsure about the second as it doesn't seem any more explicit in its analysis than treeship's post. Should I hide one, both or neither?

I am definitely in favour of people using the spoiler tags to hide potentially upsetting discussions (though please anyone reading this remember that you have to do new tags for every paragraph!) and I am willing to do it as a mod intervention when people think it's needed, but it can be tricky to know exactly where the lines should be drawn. So yeah, let me know what you reckon about the other posts before I go forward with anything else. I don't want to be seen as punishing soref, but I do want everyone to feel comfortable.

emil.y, Monday, 5 June 2023 20:24 (eleven months ago) link

Yeah this is a totally unnecessary request IMO.

TY FRANCE HATES TEXAS CONFIRMED (gyac), Monday, 5 June 2023 20:30 (eleven months ago) link

I get why the first one might be a bit too upsetting to want to just casually read, which is why I went with the request - it absolutely isn't a condemnation of the post itself but just a note of caution. I personally feel like the second post and several other comments on the same topic don't really hit the level of needing a warning. However, I know my level of comfort isn't the same as everyone else's so I'm open to suggestions.

emil.y, Monday, 5 June 2023 20:48 (eleven months ago) link

Also, I'm commenting as myself and not as 'mod' because I want to be open about my thought processes as a moderator here, and as the mod decisions I'm making aren't ones that we have a specific ruleset for I'd appreciate feedback on/criticism of those decisions coming to me rather than the other mods. I don't know if that matters to anyone but me, but that's how I'm thinking about it.

emil.y, Monday, 5 June 2023 20:54 (eleven months ago) link

Please can you lock this thread to new posts, I made a new regular one: like the queen this thread will never die: in which we ALL resign (ourselves to disgusting miseries to post-boris politics 2022)

Ugh... I'm just so embarrassed and feel even worse admitting that I f'ed something up, but I forgot the leading bracket in the closing URL tag after "Active SETI's Wikipedia" on this post:

It's a complicated post filled with links, but folks are posting to the thread and it would be nice to clean the code anarchy. Thanks in advance!
