fuck that shit, inverted 4 lyfe

I admit, I at least appreciate the sense of humor of the "Bloodstained" developers:

luigi is pretty good! the first hour or so is clunky and fairly slow, but when it steps into gear it becomes quite involving

times 牛肉麵 (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 2 November 2019 05:32 (four years ago) link

and lack of inverted y axis is fiddly but not a dealbreaker

times 牛肉麵 (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 2 November 2019 05:32 (four years ago) link

i can't think of many 3rd person games that have inverted axis options. did mario sunshine?

ciderpress, Saturday, 2 November 2019 12:27 (four years ago) link

you mean on nintendo systems?

L'assie (Euler), Saturday, 2 November 2019 12:28 (four years ago) link

3rd person non shooter i should say, i know fortnite et al do

ciderpress, Saturday, 2 November 2019 12:29 (four years ago) link

right I mean generally 3rd person AAA open world games have it (eg Just Cause) but those are shooters. the uncharteds have inverted but those are maybe just shooters too

L'assie (Euler), Saturday, 2 November 2019 12:33 (four years ago) link

well DQXI has inverted too, that's not a shooter

L'assie (Euler), Saturday, 2 November 2019 12:33 (four years ago) link

I am inverted 4 lyfe obv, being a non n00b

L'assie (Euler), Saturday, 2 November 2019 12:34 (four years ago) link

when did inverted look stop being the default?

classic thread

Steamworld Dig is 3 bucks on the Nintendo Store right now - I’ve never played it but it’s a fun Metroidy game, is that correct?

Screamin' Jay Gould (The Yellow Kid), Saturday, 2 November 2019 20:24 (four years ago) link

steamworld dig 2 is really good. 1 is lesser but still fine

ciderpress, Saturday, 2 November 2019 20:24 (four years ago) link

but yes to it being metroidy. i think 1 has some randomly generated maps whereas 2 is fully designed

ciderpress, Saturday, 2 November 2019 20:26 (four years ago) link

i can't think of many 3rd person games that have inverted axis options. did mario sunshine?

back then a lot of games didn’t, but it feels super obvious to include the option now

times 牛肉麵 (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 2 November 2019 20:35 (four years ago) link

the super dumb boss levels in luigi, made harder by the incredibly shit controls, are so unnecessarily frustrating that i am on the fence about abandoning this altogether. it’s not fun.

times 牛肉麵 (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 3 November 2019 11:50 (four years ago) link

I read a kotaku article about the terrible default controls / button placement. It strongly suggested using the shoulder buttons for be flashlight (and other abilities) to free up the right thumb for turning Luigi using the analog stick. I hadn’t played the game, but it might help.

God, I’ve turned into what I once hated as a kid - Winnie Cooper giving the tip about how to find a secret warp whistle in SMB3 in the Wizard, during a tournament for a game that supposedly no one had ever played (in the context of the movie)

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Sunday, 3 November 2019 14:23 (four years ago) link

cheers karl! so many functions being under the right hand is a nightmare so i‘ll definitely try that.

without spoiling too much, there’s a moment with frying pans which makes you aim precisely at something generic which you can’t see due to shit camera placement, with counterintuitive aiming controls (and no option to invert axes); and the retaliation attacks are faster than luigi can move, which basically means the only way to get through it is to keep hacking away until you get lucky. it doesn’t feel like skill at all.

there’s another boss which obviously requires some specific technique, but i mashed the a button for five minutes and it died.

times 牛肉麵 (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 3 November 2019 20:09 (four years ago) link

Saw a review that said something like how even for all its challenges it's easy to imagine making it through the whole game without dying once.

Excited to try that when we need a break from Death Stranding

this looks to be of the genre "games that lead to irl arguments with your spouse"

My partner doesn’t really care for vs mode so co-op is our best bet when we’re not just taking turns

can someone please quell my anxiety over the new pokemon games

are they going to suck

unashamed and trash (Unctious), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 21:24 (four years ago) link

i don't see why they would be any worse than previous pokemon games unless you're one of those people who's super invested in having all 600 legacy pokemon in the game and mad that they're trimming back

ciderpress, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 21:29 (four years ago) link

all pokémon games are the same, this is their primary selling point

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 22:28 (four years ago) link

yeah i still haven't started it whoops, i'm playing the other teacher sim jrpg first

ciderpress, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 23:04 (four years ago) link

I'm visiting my family for a couple of weeks, was halfway through Cold Steel 1 before I left and thought i'd set up remote play properly but somehow can't connect to my PS4 :((( Probably something to do with their router, but don't want to mess with it really. So started up FE3H and it's a fun time once you get used to it, a lot of similarities to Cold Steel (& Persona) structurally so far.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 23:25 (four years ago) link

i think remote play is LAN only, you can't do it over the internet (yet, i suspect they're working on a way to do this for PS5 and not just punting handhelds to Nintendo completely)

ciderpress, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 23:55 (four years ago) link

Nah remote play works outside your LAN in theory, I’ve done it. Super flaky though and probably not worth the hassle of getting it set up in the first place.

Anyone get Overland? I've never played a turn-based game, but this looks pretty cool/scary.

― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, October 5, 2019 6:02 AM (one month ago)

I'm still thinking about this

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Friday, 22 November 2019 19:19 (four years ago) link

it seems impossible. at the very least he's played checkers!

Mordy, Friday, 22 November 2019 19:23 (four years ago) link

Yeah, I mean, I've played turn-based board games, if that helps. I've never played turn-based *video games,* at least as I understand the term. So yeah, I've played computer chess and checkers and stuff, and Uno and poker and Go Fish, but not, like, XCOM.

BTW, Alien: Isolation is priced at $35 on Switch. I just picked it up for PS4 for $12. The game is five years old.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 22 November 2019 19:26 (four years ago) link

BF sale is up in UK eshop, think it starts next Wed for you US peeps. bought the Castlevania Collection for £8, loads of others I'm still thinking about (Vesperia, Wandersong, Disgaea 5 etc). EU PSN sale is disappointing tho, e.g. Days Gone is £35 vs $20 in US wtf!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 22 November 2019 19:35 (four years ago) link

$20 RE2 and $20 Days Gone seem ok here ...I wish A Plague Tale was a tad cheaper than $25 and Sekiro was lower than $40, but hey, all of these in due time. I'll just wait my ... turn.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 22 November 2019 19:44 (four years ago) link

xp i will anti-recommend vesperia if that helps, i was very disappointed by it despite liking that series in general. wait for them to put a different one on switch imo

ciderpress, Friday, 22 November 2019 19:45 (four years ago) link

Plague Tale not even on sale in EU (although there is some stuff floating about that other games may be added next week?)
just noticed that Cold Steel 3 is £34.99 and £35 PSN credit is £28.21 currently on cdkeys, tempting...

about 30 hours into Fire Emblem now, there are a lot of improvements to the game but I think getting rid of the weapons triangle has reduced that tactics somewhat, and now battles are beginning to become too repetitive with the same strat winning over and over. And why change a winning strat.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 22 November 2019 19:53 (four years ago) link

funny you say that about Vesperia, I've bounced off the series twice before (phantasia GBA, abyss 3DS) and was hoping this one was going to be one that finally hooked me!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 22 November 2019 19:54 (four years ago) link

xp i will anti-recommend vesperia if that helps, i was very disappointed by it despite liking that series in general. wait for them to put a different one on switch imo

vesperia is the only one i've played! i found myself getting bored of it after a while, even though it should be right up my alley. what did you dislike about it (compared to the earlier ones)?

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Friday, 22 November 2019 19:58 (four years ago) link

xp depends what you didn't like about those i guess, abyss is one of the ones i like

ciderpress, Friday, 22 November 2019 20:01 (four years ago) link

phantasia was OK and I meant to go back to it but never did, abyss I dropped after a few hours cos I just hated the main character! I know he's supposed to get better later on but I just couldn't deal.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 22 November 2019 20:09 (four years ago) link

yeah that's basically abyss's thing, it's an asshole protagonist gets put through the wringer story, and a pretty good one at that but you do have to put up with him for the first act
