So far, this is great. I'm actually using it to rehab from shoulder surgery and it's been very helpful! I look like a goddam moron doing it!

i just ordered it. :)

no, that was a lie, but i swear i saw this thread and was immediately going to buy it! i was so excited i went ahead and said it

and now it's sold out everywhere :(

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Sunday, 3 November 2019 16:53 (two weeks ago) link

fuck, now i'm a pre-emptive liar with no ring fit adventure

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Sunday, 3 November 2019 16:53 (two weeks ago) link

this is insane, though! is everyone currently holed up in their living room holding extending yoga poses?

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Sunday, 3 November 2019 16:54 (two weeks ago) link

it was sold out when i "bought" it on Amazon and then they sent it three days later anyway, so maybe do that?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 3 November 2019 18:25 (two weeks ago) link

ok, did that (for real)!

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Sunday, 3 November 2019 19:02 (two weeks ago) link

thinking about getting this as well

ciderpress, Sunday, 3 November 2019 19:55 (two weeks ago) link

as everyone everywhere says, regardless of your fitness level, this is a real workout! each "world" represents a single session though you can absolutely do more or less. it's a dumb rpg but no dumber than say xenosaga. You will want to replay levels to grind occasionally.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 3 November 2019 20:06 (two weeks ago) link

I definitely can’t complete a whole world per workout session! I’m very out of shape, though.

remy bean, Sunday, 3 November 2019 20:34 (two weeks ago) link

I just bought it from Best Buy. I wouldn't have normally done it, but I was in a bit of a post-sad mania. Did the first world before a date tonight, and it had me pretty shaky. Definitely a good workout.

I actually like how reflexive you have to be in the running parts--I come from a background of LOTS of rhythm games, including years and years of DDR. The reactionary ring movements were kind of scratching that itch.

unashamed and trash (Unctious), Monday, 4 November 2019 01:13 (two weeks ago) link

tbf, i just beat world three and got the difficult up to 11 and now i don't think i'll be doing a world per session going forward as that kicked my ass.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 4 November 2019 01:55 (two weeks ago) link

are we thinking this is an everyday type of deal, or an every other day type of deal? It's a good workout, but with no weights, it seems like something where you don't risk hurting yourself if you were doing a couple activities every single day.

unashamed and trash (Unctious), Monday, 4 November 2019 16:12 (two weeks ago) link

As I am in post op recovery, I am aiming for every other day. Otherwise daily would work

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 4 November 2019 16:18 (two weeks ago) link

once i get it i'm planning on working out as much as possible until i hurt myself, so i can sue nintendo (they didn't add any fine print saying i can't sue them, right?)

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Monday, 4 November 2019 17:03 (two weeks ago) link

in classic nintendo fashion, it tells you to take a break and get water after like every activity--and even was like, "this might be a good stopping point so you don't push yourself too far and stop yourself from coming back next time"

unashamed and trash (Unctious), Monday, 4 November 2019 18:16 (two weeks ago) link

yes, but does it ever specifically warn you to not continuously play because there's a danger of injury?

asking for my lawyer

and even was like, "this might be a good stopping point so you don't push yourself too far and stop yourself from coming back next time"

because personally i understand this as "you might get bored with the game if you play it too much right now, that's what nintendo means by this message"

dang, i had an intense workout! that was more difficult than i expected. i am comically bad at the pulling apart / vacuum gesture move.

i initially thought i'd do two worlds in a row to get a feel for it, but i genuinely needed a break after the first. two thumbs up...way up...and over the top of your head...HOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Thursday, 7 November 2019 19:55 (one week ago) link

one little touch that i thought was good: the way the hit points you inflict on the enemy are cumulative, and don't directly show you how much each individual hit does. instead it's an easy arithmetic thing (usually involving increments of 6 or 7) that's distracting an easy in a pleasant way.

i am going to buy this, hoping that my sons will enjoy watching me do it every morning before work.

there needs to be a game you play by attaching a joycon to a wheel of a "dumb" exercise bike. switch is great on a bike already, but integration with a game would be excellent.

that's a really good idea! maybe they'll patch that into ring fit adventure some day?

It kind of exists with things like zwift and wahoo, but if Nintendo could do it for a Nintendo price that would be amazing.

this game is surprisingly fun. the ring-con and leg strap worked really well for me. felt pretty synced up with the avatar throughout. i was able to get through world 1 in a reasonable amount of time before work, and it was enough to get a sweat going. i just wish the story was more hardcore fantasy instead of this winking fitness fantasy.

this is the most sweating I've done in ages. I haven't gone for longer than 15 minutes on the activity clock or so at a time so far, though I'm sure I could go a bit longer

i have played this for ~20 minutes each morning for 5 mornings straight. I enjoy the SMB3 map style, complete with minigame detours. the first minigame, which is basically ring whack-a-mole, is also fun. only on world 3, but i am motivated to beat this thing.

i'm annoyed that enemies display their weakness via color, so you match the workout color to the enemy color to do more damage. it's a reasonable compromise for clarity but feels like a gaming sin somehow.

This is fun and seems like a decent little workout, my son likes it a lot. I do worry about the sturdiness of the Ring Con though. It doesn't seem super tough and there's one move in the adventure mode, the Abs Guard I think, which feels as though it could break the ring if you squeeze too hard. Anyone else feeling that way?

nate woolls, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 10:46 (one week ago) link

the goal of ring fit is to become fit enough to break the ring

yesterday when i was getting fit i was zoning out thinking about an elaborate twitter prank where i keep on "breaking" the ring, and i keep at-ing @nintendo to complain. gradually over several months, i claim to break about a dozen rings, and begin demanding new ones from nintendo. meanwhile, everyone on twitter is amazed because they haven't even broken a single ring

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 16:32 (one week ago) link

or maybe the ring fit gets you so fit that you can't grasp common objects without crushing them

i really am getting good work done on my "pecs" and triceps. i am not a guy who goes to the gym, because i don't want the other guys at the gym to stuff my in a locker when they see me struggling to pick up the 10 lb. weights. so pulling and pushing in this goddamn ring several dozen times qualifies as a really good workout for me.

ready to get ripped and then kick some shrimp puny ass if any weakling looks me in the eye!!!

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 17:46 (one week ago) link

a gym membership around here costs about 1 ring fit adventure per month, so I also don't go to the gym. we have good weather, so most people ride, run, swim, etc. I don't have any time alone for that. I generally burn ~100 kCal per morning with the ring, which isn't very much at all, but I've done it every day. it also helps you achieve some balance between the muscles you work. I'm not trying to make a big impact on my body. just trying to feel a bit more active. maybe this thing will get us through the winter, and we'll feel good about working out publicly by spring.

my doc explictly told me NOT to do this while rehabbing as it gets my arms straight over my head but i think i'm just gonna alter the exercises so that doesn't happen.
gonna have to pick back up at world 4 now

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 14 November 2019 21:30 (six days ago) link

just finished world 4 last night and unlocked my first healing exercise, which seems like a better way to go, exercise-wise, than smoothies.

i think i'm just gonna alter the exercises so that doesn't happen.

i just noticed last night that rather than individually picking your 6 exercises in adventure mode, you can choose from pre-sets (cardio, yoga, lower body, etc).

i haven't messed around in Custom mode much, but is everything unlocked from the get-go, or do you have to unlock in Adventure mode?

as a gymphobic fattey and mostly-lapsed gamer, I want one of these, but for various reasons will not be in a position to acquire one until February or so

(mostly bcz money and also I don't trust the "quiet mode" to be quiet enough not to make my downstairs neighbours want to kill me, like, even more than they probably want to kill me as I wander round my flat with what I think is a perfectly normal human gait and probably resound boomingly around their skulls)

anyway until then I look forward to watching this thread over the next 3 months to see who still plays, who completes all the modes and gets bored, how many rings are broken, who ascends to Herculean übermensch and has no more need for puny video games or messageboards, etc

I wasn't able to play yesterday bc lego movie on the tv. So I exercised outside of the game to be sure I remain ring fit.

$1,000,000 or 1 bag of honeycrisp apples (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 16 November 2019 15:21 (four days ago) link

sufjan have you tried out the thing where you squeeze/pull the ring outside of the game, irl, and it keeps track? i've only done it once so far, but i could see that being really useful sometimes.

spacecadet, i can give you some more details on the quiet mode if you're interested, because i'm in the same boat. i play exclusively using quiet mode. i live in a 2nd floor apartment with hardwood floors, and almost every single square foot of the space loudly squeaks with every step. in the game, in order to travel through levels you have to "run". in standard mode, this is done by lightly jogging in place, i think (i have never tried the normal mode). in quiet mode, you run by doing squats. my apartment is so squeaky that even squats are loud and cause some squeaking. specifically, i think that to my downstairs neighbors it sounds like sex. so they probably think i'm a sex god, because a typical play session usually lasts about half an hour.

or at least maybe they THOUGHT I was a sex god. because i managed to find one small space in my apartment that doesn't squeak. there's a spot in my living room with little columns that jut into the room a bit, and i think the downstairs neighbors have the same floor plan. in that spot, better supported by the architecture, the floor doesn't squeak. so when i play the game i move my tv a bit to face the tiny spot and do my best to stay in that area and not create sex sounds.

there are lots of moves/exercises/poses that you can unlock as you play the game. most of them are pretty quiet, involving stretching or squeezing the bejeezus out of the ring. there are also a few that involve stepping or lifting the legs a lot. luckily, you can only assign 6 moves at a time to your workout, and there are dozens of moves, so it's very easy to just avoid the loud ones.

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Saturday, 16 November 2019 18:44 (four days ago) link

thanks, Karl, that's good to know!

btw yr neighbours told me they hope everything's ok in your personal life but at least they don't have to buy earplugs any more

a passing spacecadet, Saturday, 16 November 2019 20:11 (four days ago) link

thats good to know since i'm in a similar situation where i live below my landlord in a squeaky apt and would probably use quiet mode most of the time

my ring arrived but probably not gonna unbox it and start my routine until next week

ciderpress, Saturday, 16 November 2019 20:22 (four days ago) link

i should probably write a letter to the neighbors about the whole squeaky noise in one location in prolonged bursts thing, proactively, to address the situation.

one thing that is sad about the game: you start to get invested in smoothie recipes, working toward them and gathering the ingredients and such. meanwhile, irl, if you're like me, you're too lazy to get the smoothie ingredients so you just have to make due with water and alcohol and coffee.

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Saturday, 16 November 2019 21:08 (four days ago) link

(which, to be clear, is my holy trinity of beverages. i'm just saying there's still a chasm between doing things within the game space and changing habits outside of the game.)

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Saturday, 16 November 2019 21:09 (four days ago) link

I remember thinking as I grew vegetables and cooked recipes and meditated in Glitch (RIP) that it would probably be a way better use of time to learn to do the same things IRL instead

of course in the, hmm, several (eek, 7) years since Glitch disappeared I have done... neither
