Aimless, this is like if someone were to ask to have a poll thread title changed to reflect when ballots are due ... as in it is a routine thing that "comes with the territory" ... and you suddenly are coming along making it into "a thing" ... except instead of complaining about ilx being serious about polls, you are sounding condescending and considering the context of the thread ...

the mods should not be expected to take on that level of oversight on a single thread

btw, a mod has complied with sahahell's and pplains wishes. the posts are gone. so, this has been resolved for now.

deleting a post in a thread, if you have the link to the post in question is very quick and easy to do.

Aimless, sic was pointing out that there's been a long-standing tacit agreement that we do clean up that thread, even before we had any non-boy moderators. We don't have the person-power to clean up every thread, it's true, but "not boys" are a significant minority on the boards and having a space is important. I mean, in theory I'm not super-into the idea of people making up rules for participation in threads and then expecting the mods to enforce those rules, but in practice there are plenty of times when that's needed, and that's cool by me.

Also, yeah, I kind of wasn't even thinking about the fact that this was a request made on the request forum - that's even less work for the mods because we're given the links straight up. For some reason I was thinking about the work involved in monitoring a thread for boy-intrusion.

but one or more of the mods has acted in this specific case, so now we are only discussing what sort of policy the mods might want to follow in future cases such as this. imo, that is for the mods to decide among themselves, if they wish.

xp dude, pretty much the "policy" has been that a non-male will alert the mods, often with a post to the mod request forum, notifying them that a boy has posted to the thread. I think in the past 10 years, it has either been WGW-style lol action or someone like sic, treeship, or crut accidentally responding to something and forgetting which thread it was.

For some reason I decided to check that goombahs were indeed the Mario guys who we all love to squish, and now I've found out that "goombah" with an h is actually a slur against Italians, and that "goomba" (the Mario guys who we all love to squish) is probably derived from that slur. Well, shit.

Mario is a great Italian-American, so it's all good

Aimless, the idea that the no-boys thread needs a special mod so that "the other mods don't have to deal with that" is weird. no one is actually asking for mods to sit around clicking refresh on that thread to police it - they're asking, in the "delete this post" thread, for a mod to "delete this post." they've additionally provided justification by invoking the longstanding precedent for mods to delete threads by boys barging into the "no boys allowed" thread, which i gather has been done for ages, for good reason. are you actually looking to have a discussion of "what sort of policy the mods might want to follow in future cases such as this"? why?

Every single “delete this post” request requires discussion among moderators, and then the appointment of a new sitewide moderator, to handle this and any future post deletion requests regarding that one specific thread. This will eliminate the difficulties involved in reading and reacting to a linked post, freeing up more time for managing ruckus.

while we're placing requests for completely innocuous admin-type clear-ups, if a mod could replace the long quote from me in j/v/c's post here with [accidental paste deleted] or similar, it would only make the thread more readable.

Sic, even though j/v/c posted in the thread that the paste was a mistake, I'd still rather not get into the habit of cleaning up posts when the request doesn't come directly from the poster (unless it's something properly bad that needs squishing).

emily - understood, but I thought the combo of jvc expressing that it was a mistake, plus having pulled all that out of hide tags, was a different context.

(I'm loath to create additional obligations for the mods, per se, but the advent of hide tags might prompt further precedential discussion generally: just as pulling 77 content onto the public board is frowned upon, it might be a bad idea to normalise open-posting content that other posters had hidden.)

Ah, I hadn't realised it was all pulled from hide tags. I think that is a different context, so I've just edited to your suggestion. Agree that people generally shouldn't take stuff out of hiding if they can avoid it. My reluctance was partly a "no editing without permission of the original poster" thing and partly a "there aren't enough mods to always clean up your innocuous mistakes so learn to live with them" thing, and I realise the latter sounds a bit lazy but we are very very few these days.
