BOB POPPINS: Robert Smith's guest vocals, 2003-2021

Bloke from The Cure has released two albums with the band in the last twenty years (and abandoned several more). But in that time, he's gradually worked up a CDsworth of Featuring credits on other artist's records. In this poll, we will agree on which are the best.

How can you do this poll in 2021 without Gorillaz and Chvrches as options!?

Anyhow: the winner is clearly: “I’m not love”.

tbh you posted without reading the thread

it's really something that his voice has barely changed with age at all

for those wanting an update on new cure music, he said in an interview promoting "how not to drown" that the two cure albums they've been working on for the last few years only need to be mixed & he's hoping to announce release plans in 6 weeks, and his solo "noise album" is still on the way too

ufo, Friday, 4 June 2021 12:36 (two weeks ago) link

he also said the rest of the band were just not interested in his noise stuff which is why it became a solo album

ufo, Friday, 4 June 2021 12:37 (two weeks ago) link

Cool, so new albums will be coming out never then

ehh "the albums just need to be mixed and recording is done and i'm really hoping to announce them soon" is progress from the variations on "we've almost finished recording our new albums" that he was saying for the last two years

ufo, Friday, 4 June 2021 13:02 (two weeks ago) link

not that i even have much optimism that new music from them will be that good or anything at this point in time

ufo, Friday, 4 June 2021 13:03 (two weeks ago) link

the crystal castles song is a serious jam but I can never listen to their music again tbh

The only "bad" album they've put out is Wild Mood Swings; I don't fault their later material for being comfortable rather than visionary.

the last few had their moments but weren't really good overall, not even in a comfortable settled into their sound etc. way

ufo, Friday, 4 June 2021 13:50 (two weeks ago) link

Da Hype is a massive banger but Robert Smith is not really what makes it good. Still this is a pretty solid set of tracks, certainly beats the stuff The Cure has done since Bloodflowers.

Counterpoint: nah, they were mostly good

I would say the total opposite. Who knew his voice was so suited to House ecstasy ? But they were so right.

What's kinda remarkable about all these heard in a heap is that -- and sequencing and more would allow for even more fun possibilities -- is that it becomes an absolutely amazing genre-hopping solo album. Reminds me of nothing so much as Sinead O'Connor's collaborations compilation, which is a deeply underrated collection.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 June 2021 16:43 (two weeks ago) link

the cure has always been genre-hopping though.

that's why they rule.
