Debut album...classic or dud?

BrokenWitch04, Sunday, 20 June 2004 02:23 (eighteen years ago) link

I've never heard of this record.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 20 June 2004 02:29 (eighteen years ago) link

A mind-numbingly polarized debate on the merits of the Stone Roses? This will be a completely unprecedented day in the history of ILM!

Love the singles, could take or leave the rest. Middle gets a bit soggy.

i still love it. even after 15 years.

I kind of like The Second Coming.

Second Coming is OK apart from the lyrics to Squire's songs, which ore often extraordinarily terrible hoary rock cliche bollocks.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 12 May 2016 13:45 (six years ago) link

how can this be anything other than atrocious, really

is there enough time for ilx to pre-cover this?

Give us a title and we can do it.

Actually, if they announce an album, we really should ...

.. You thinking The Seahorses? Or was this "step one" towards it?

Mark G, Thursday, 12 May 2016 13:48 (six years ago) link

the lyrics to drivin' south are total rock bollocks iirc

(main prostitute from Game Of Thrones) (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 12 May 2016 13:51 (six years ago) link

hey it's either that or homophobic faux toasting

"I'm on a tightrope baby, nine miles high, striding through the clouds on my ribbon in the sky"

It's just fucking awful. Love Spreads is OK, Begging You is OK, How Do You Sleep is OK, Daybreak is kind of weird ad-libbed cod-funk but not awful despite that description, but the rest is just awful, awful, awful.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:32 (six years ago) link

just realised i'd never knowingly heard the reformed roses playing anything and i was morbidly curious whether ian brown still sounded like he'd undergone a laryngectomy

all i could find on youtube was footage where the crowd's singing was louder than his, so it'll be interesting to hear what he sounds like on the new single

(main prostitute from Game Of Thrones) (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:33 (six years ago) link

"I am very excited, for them mainly," Gallagher told NME of the band's return. "They're going to play some new songs. I bumped into Ian in a supermarket recently. He was buying chocolate flavoured shower gel. This is not a joke. He leant and said 'have you tried this?' and I said of course I hadn't. He swears by it, says it's amazing. And before it turned into a photoshoot with everyone and their cameraphones, he was telling me how excited they are by it all. He said it was like they were making their first record again."

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:34 (six years ago) link

although the rock bollocks on the second coming is indeed terrible, i'd still rather have that than the seahorses' 'Strap on Sally chased us down the alley / We feared for our behinds / Oasis was a shop with shoes so hot / They were sure to blow your minds'

(main prostitute from Game Of Thrones) (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:37 (six years ago) link

you realise those lines are a direct quote from Auden, right?

pete auden, john squire's dealer?

(main prostitute from Game Of Thrones) (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:39 (six years ago) link

I really do like 'Breaking into Heaven.' It's a shame it drops off after that.

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 12 May 2016 14:51 (six years ago) link

I am sure this record will swagger

under the weight of its own swollen, portentous cobblers

I dont expect much but im still excited that there's new music by one of my fave ever bands. I loved the second coming, they should let Ian do the lyrics though.

Odysseus, Thursday, 12 May 2016 15:03 (six years ago) link

Ian let John do most of the lyrics and songwriting on Second Coming because he thought there'd be plenty of chance for him on other albums. And there was! His solo albums.

I'm kinda curious as to what this is going to sound like, whether it'll be an extension of Second Coming or self-titled album retread. I'll be very surprised if it sounds more like Golden Greats.

But... could you imagine a formation in your lemonade? Ho! (Turrican), Thursday, 12 May 2016 17:22 (six years ago) link

So, I'm guessing this is to be released to make number one next week?

I'd be all over a new Stone Roses record if it leaned towards their more groove/funk-oriented stuff. 'Beautiful Thing' has grown on me a lot.

prediction: they won't make it as they probably are at each other's throats and since the two tracks they released were total bobbins odds on the rest is complete dreck.

some more payday gigs then back to being broken up

I assumed they put out the single, nobody liked it (apart from Shakey), so they thought, "Fuck this for a game of soldiers, let's not bother then".

I find it hard to believe any one could sincerely say All For One is a good song. Internal conflicts aside, it truly sounds career-dismantling

PaulTMA, Friday, 30 June 2017 00:11 (five years ago) link

Well, it's more that people are interpreting some comments Ian Brown made from the stage on the last date of their tour as saying the band were splitting, rather than them coming out and saying "we are splitting" ...

'All For One' wasn't very good, but I liked 'Beautiful Thing'

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Friday, 30 June 2017 00:41 (five years ago) link

I wouldn't imagine it would be easy to stick that song on an album after the beating it took. But the split is probably because Reni is a nightmare

Fool’s Gold is one of those love it or hate it songs huh? There’s another thread on ILM posted upthread where everyone seems to hate it passionately.

I didn’t care much for it but I fell in love with it being young and dancing to it in Barcelona’s Sidecar. I was only an hour or so in there.. maybe it was the night, maybe the dj, maybe I was too young to know any better, but the songs he played all felt very exciting to me despite knowing them beforehand.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 26 October 2018 19:00 (three years ago) link

He also played This Charming Man by the Smiths. whichj remind me: This might sound like total bollocks it to many in here but I think I prefer the Stone Roses debut to any of The Smiths albums. It rocks in ways the Smiths never did for me and I don’t care for Morrisey as a lyricist either way.

Fool's Gold is all-time great

Οὖτις, Friday, 26 October 2018 19:46 (three years ago) link

It is, but an all-time great track that I'm not sure I ever need to hear again at this point.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 26 October 2018 20:14 (three years ago) link

i came to love the s.t, but i was disappointed when i first bought it and there was nothing as righteously pure-groove and melody-less as "fools gold"

brimstead, Friday, 26 October 2018 22:05 (three years ago) link

I never, ever get tired of the s/t album.

Yerac, Friday, 26 October 2018 22:09 (three years ago) link

i was listening to the SR debut over and over in the car for a few days last month and it still sounded just as great as ever. i've always had the weird US version that ends w/ "fools gold" and i kinda can't imagine it not ending that way. i might love "what the world is waiting for" even more though.
