these are always so hard to put together. i hope i didn't screw this up.

Bee OK, Thursday, 17 May 2018 00:24 (five years ago) link

for those of you who don't know and might be confused. the Bridesmaids poll is what songs finished with the second or third most votes in the 15 different polls that have been run. a wrap up if you will with the Championship round coming next week.

Bee OK, Thursday, 17 May 2018 00:30 (five years ago) link

37 choices, this is going to be hard to pick just one.

Bee OK, Thursday, 17 May 2018 00:39 (five years ago) link

A comp with these 37 songs would totally rule.

Tough call here, but I'll not pass on the chance to vote for Romeo Void for a second time.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Thursday, 17 May 2018 01:21 (five years ago) link

Ooh some doozies here. Man oh man. Hard to vote against Poison Arrow. Even harder to vote against Big Country. But it’s Dance Hall Days love.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 17 May 2018 01:36 (five years ago) link

solely voting "Private Idaho" for 1) the song my 3-year old and I bond over 2) just being undeniable

xxpost

look, i sing my kids to sleep with depressing alex chilton songs like every other parent, our reasoning can't always be perfect.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Thursday, 17 May 2018 04:51 (five years ago) link

Poison Arrow, Private Idaho and Video Killed The Radio Star are the ones that jump out, but there are probably about 20 perfect songs here.

kitchen person, Thursday, 17 May 2018 04:52 (five years ago) link

Private Idaho. It was the gateway for my teenager to get into new wave.

that's not my post, Thursday, 17 May 2018 06:27 (five years ago) link

Super hard but going with Psych Furs over Cab Voltaire only because 'Love My Way' randomly plays in my head more often.

agree, that there are probably 20 plus perfect songs on here, so i stopped at the first one and voted. i was thinking does it get better than "Ca Plane Pour Moi" and thought probably not.

Bee OK, Thursday, 17 May 2018 23:51 (five years ago) link

Voted Private Idaho, but wanted to point out that I heard the full ten minute Todd Terje edit of Pop Muzik in Kmart the other day.

“New York, London, Paris, Munich” has got to be one of the most egregious trying-really-hard-to-make-it-rhyme line ever.

This series should’ve been 100 volumes.

Are you kidding me? This is impossible.

Seconded. Much harder than the previous polls in this series

cruel summer or pop muzik.is it just me or do pop muzik and video kilt the radio star feel similar to each other and like, NO other songs?

Hunt3r, Friday, 18 May 2018 04:20 (five years ago) link

I don't know only one song on here and it's the Let's Active one.

Bee OK, Friday, 18 May 2018 15:26 (five years ago) link

went for thomas dolby because i've been enjoying that one recently and named my new wave disco night after the song

"Pop Muzik" seems to show up on lots of '80s comps despite being a hit in 1979 (early '79 in the UK). I guess sounding like an '80s song is enough for the compilers...

Anyway, Pop Muzik is my #2 bridesmaid, behind Never Say Never.

Lee626, Monday, 21 May 2018 09:27 (five years ago) link

A few of these are of such a piece with the albums (Big Country, ABC, Furs, TFF) that I have trouble thinking of them as singles. I think I ultimately went Bananarama, not because it's my favorite on here - several are songs I actually voted for before- but I think because lately I've been getting a dark, spooky, definitely evocative undercurrent to the track that helps it stick in my head. Other than that: Romeo Void, Plastic Bertrand, Devo, B-52s, Yaz, Frankie, ... so many great songs.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 21 May 2018 12:46 (five years ago) link

Really been battling between my standard answer to everything (B-52's) and Romeo Void. "Never Say Never" is ridiculously great, but I went with the one I'm sure I've actually played more.

That was the same battled I faced.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 May 2018 17:16 (five years ago) link

So tough, but narrowed it down to these two:

The first volume is pretty much all stuff from '78-9, which they justify in the liner notes by saying those years were the "Year Zero" for the New Wave.

Anyway, Pop Muzik
