(eep, sorry about the huge cover image)

Anyway, my picks:

1. Do You Wanna Hold Me?
2. A Million Miels Away
3. China

"Our House" is played out for me at this point.

Dangleballs and the Ballerina (cryptosicko), Friday, 30 March 2018 04:05 (six years ago) link

Want to vote for Red Rockers just because I'm afraid no one else will.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 30 March 2018 04:23 (six years ago) link

Plimsouls just over Adam And & Flock of Seagulls

not quite as cool as seeing damo's wang but (contenderizer), Friday, 30 March 2018 04:47 (six years ago) link

I love that my two runners-up already got confirmed votes!

Dangleballs and the Ballerina (cryptosicko), Friday, 30 March 2018 04:48 (six years ago) link

I heard "Fascination" the other day in a cafe, such a weird song. Voted for it.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 30 March 2018 04:48 (six years ago) link

I love that my two runners-up already got confirmed votes!

"China" brings back vivid memories of a radio show I used to love.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 30 March 2018 04:55 (six years ago) link

Q: why were the Plimsouls so good and Peter Case solo so meh?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 30 March 2018 04:56 (six years ago) link

Aww, I like Taco. I don’t know if I could in good conscience vote for him, but it’s hard for me to conjure any malice.
On that note, though, and as long as I’m dispiriting everyone in this thread, I think “Our House” is the only other song on the list that I’ve knowingly heard.

You're all losing so many points on your progress bars (Champiness), Friday, 30 March 2018 04:56 (six years ago) link

I like Fascination, it's good timey mmusic.

Puttin' on the Ritz obviously

Human League v. Madness. Hate that Jam song.

"Do You Wanna Hold Me" by a mile.

enochroot, Friday, 30 March 2018 11:37 (six years ago) link

BWW is great but am throwing A Flock of Seagulls a deserved vote.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 30 March 2018 11:58 (six years ago) link

Voted plimsoles. i remember case’s first solo as quite good, ever declining follows.

Hunt3r, Friday, 30 March 2018 13:46 (six years ago) link

Maybe just my personal tastes, but this seems like a pretty weak volume. Nothing I flat-out love, but going for "Fascination," a weirdly wonderful song (as noted above.)

No energy, only great chaos (Dan Peterson), Friday, 30 March 2018 14:26 (six years ago) link

A Flock of Seagulls narrowly over Plimsouls

kornrulez6969, Friday, 30 March 2018 14:39 (six years ago) link

OK most of these have been pretty terrible but this one actually has several songs I love.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 30 March 2018 14:45 (six years ago) link

Which I will get to in a second but I recently watched the Taco vid and had completely forgotten about all the ppl in blackface. Eesh.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 30 March 2018 14:46 (six years ago) link

Radio staples I liked:
Desperate But Not Serious- Adam Ant
Puttin' on the Ritz - Taco
(Keep Feeling) Fascination - The Human League
Our House - Madness
A Million Miles Away - The Plimsouls

Bands whose source albums I own(ed):
Beat Surrender - The Jam
The Walls Came Down - The Call

Sentimental favorite loved by my teenage self:
Promises, Promises - Naked Eyes

Naked Eyes for me. Tragic ending, too - keyboardist Rob Fisher died of cancer at 42.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 30 March 2018 14:47 (six years ago) link

The Human League.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 30 March 2018 14:51 (six years ago) link

(Keep Feeling) Fascination - The Human League
Fascination is a classic. I love it so much. Best part is the "And so the converation turned until the sun went down" parts. Also, RS and I realized recently that their outfits are great because it just looks like they went to Next 10 mins before the video was made.

Beat Surrender - The Jam
LOVE. Dancing at Club Metro on Oxford St. (RIP you fun shitty club) to this at like 3 am stands out in my mind as one of the happiest and most free moments I've ever experienced.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 30 March 2018 14:58 (six years ago) link

But according to Spotify Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You) - A Flock of Seagulls is the song I listened to most last year so I have to vote that.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 30 March 2018 14:58 (six years ago) link

Wishing vs Do You Wanna Hold Me is agony.

campreverb, Friday, 30 March 2018 15:04 (six years ago) link

Beat Surrender seems like the first Style Council song to me.

Holy crap the ubiquity of the Call in dorm collections in mid/late 80s, i never understood it.

Hunt3r, Friday, 30 March 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

I will probably vote Million Miles Away bcz I super love the Plimsouls and “Valley Girl” is/was one of my alltime fave movies

But I need to give love to Whistle Down The Wind. It’s a bit blowsy sounding now but I used to love it sooooooo much (and Sixteen Candles)

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2018 17:55 (six years ago) link

Plimsouls or Our House? Or Adam Ant? this one seems especially packed with acts that were huge in the UK but modestly popular in the US, or modestly popular in the US and non-existent in the UK.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 30 March 2018 18:45 (six years ago) link

my karaoke version of "Desperate But Not Serious" >>>> Adam Ant

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 30 March 2018 19:21 (six years ago) link

Beat Surrender seems like the first Style Council song to me.

'The Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had to Swallow)' before it was a bit of a Style Council-in-Jam clothing too, although the transition really happened in 1981 with the two stand-alone singles: 'Funeral Pyre' was Sound Affects taken to an extreme, whereas 'Absolute Beginners' was where the horn section crept in and pointed the way to The Gift etc., which found Weller starting to dip into his soul and funk influences.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 30 March 2018 20:09 (six years ago) link

Naked Eyes just pipping A Flock Of Seagulls

Freedom of Choice - White Flag's fast power pop version of "Wuthering Heights" is a m a z i n g

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 31 March 2018 04:01 (six years ago) link

Eesh, that Freedom of Choice comp is kind of terrible. Much worse, listening now, than I realized at the time. All these distinctive, thrilling, forward-thinking pop songs mashed down to a fuzzy gray slack-rock paste. People these days frequently talk about the unearned indulgence granted to mediocre white guys, but I've rarely encountered such a convincing musical demonstration of the phenomenon in action. The Finger track is one of the worst offenders in this regard (no offense, mookie), along with Das Damen's lazy-ass wallow through The Pretenders' effing brilliant "The Wait". At least White Flag are trying to do something interesting with their tragically misguided "Wuthering Heights" cover, though the result is dead on arrival.

Complaints aside, the assemblers clearly knew what they were doing. The first couple tracks are perhaps the best of a bad lot. Sonic Youth rampage through Plastic Bertrand's "Ca Plane Pour Moi" in 4 Tunna Brix beast mode, producing the rare total pisstake that's not only genuinely funny but enjoyable even on repeat listens. The Muffs, meanwhile, play "Rock N Roll Girl" relatively straight, adding just enough muscle & swagger to make it sting. Kim Shattuck's a much more engaging singer than anyone in The Beat, and the band rip it like they own it. I honestly prefer this version to the original (the gender flip definitely helps). Speaking of which, Red Kross probably could have punched out an acceptable Go-Go's cover in their sleep, but coming up on their Phaseshifter peak, they at least bring a fully developed sound & sensibility to their power pop take on "How Much More". It's a bit undercooked, but worth a listen.

A couple tracks later, Mudhoney turn in a surprisingly faithful and well-mannered rendition of Elvis Costello's "Pump It Up". It's good times, tight and punchy as Arm & co. ever got, but still a pale shadow of the original. At which point we're not quite a third of the way through the collection, with few bright spots left in sight. I do love Big Dipper's ragged stab at Pete Shelley's "Homosapien" (one of my all-time favorite songs to begin with). While they make the same "bold move" as virtually every other artist here, swapping deeply uncool synthesizers out for MOAR BAD GUITAR, the band at least throw themselves into their performance, effectively translating the original's intoxicating blend of righteous anger and joyful exuberance. And like Mudhoney before them, closers Superchunk serve up "Girl U Want" pretty much as they found it. It's a perfectly acceptable cover, nerdy and punk enough to approximate the manic buzz of early Devo, but nowhere near so odd or inspired.

Between those semi-highlights, we get some polite recitation (the two Split Enz covers, Yo La Tengo's "Dreaming"), a potentially good idea stranded in the early stages of development (Polvo's "Mexican Radio"), and a bunch of deliberately cruddy drek (sorry, YLT). The whole thing feels rushed, like they gave the bands a few days notice, grabbed the first or second take of whatever transpired, and stuck a price tag on the result. Honestly, it's hard to think of a better single-serving indictment of ascendant US indie rock's retrograde veneration of "regular dude" rockers propped up by distortion pedals.

not quite as cool as seeing damo's wang but (contenderizer), Saturday, 31 March 2018 07:31 (six years ago) link

Bow Wow Wow no contest for me, though some of these other songs are cute

Josefa, Saturday, 31 March 2018 07:39 (six years ago) link

"Fascination" should (and probably will) win, but there needs to be a vote for "Promises, Promises", so.

dorsalstop, Saturday, 31 March 2018 08:46 (six years ago) link

i spent a couple days entirely unable to remember or guess what promises promises was, but somehow just now i read the title here, and in my memory heard “YOU MAKE ME...PROMISES PROMISES.” actual lol. thats got to be naked eyes.

voted for plimsouls, almost went madness

stormzy daniels (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 00:02 (six years ago) link

I love many of these songs but "Promises Promises" is in its own class. I have been toying with the idea of a poll thread just of the excellent things about that song. The Nile-ish guitar? The French horn sample? The big gated snare? The reverb in general? The woody xylophone sound? Specific bits of anguish in the vocal ad libs?

bone thugs & prosody (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 00:12 (six years ago) link

Some strong tracks on here, but this has to be "Our House".

o. nate, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 01:12 (six years ago) link

has no one remarked that Naked Eyes' first hit was a cover of a Dionne Warwick song and their second shared a title w/another Bacharach-David song sung by Warwick?

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 01:14 (six years ago) link

This is between The Human League, Madness and The Plimsouls. "(Keep Feeling) Fascination" gets it.

the future is now, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 02:05 (six years ago) link

"(Keep Feeling) Fascination" does that thing that "1999" does, where a different member of the band takes a line of the verse. I had to look up who did it first, Prince beat them by a few months. Might be a good idea for a thread (or not)?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 02:29 (six years ago) link

Had to think about this one a bit, as there's some bands here that I really like, but none of the songs here are my favorite anything. A very lukewarm bunch.

Ultimately ended up going with the Human League, because enh, why not?

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 03:09 (six years ago) link

XP There's that bit in "Tempted" where a few of the Squeeze guys (and Costello) each take a line.

Making Plans For Sturgill (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 03:35 (six years ago) link

Also Stevie's "You Are The Sunshine of My Life." And lots of Sly Stone.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 03:48 (six years ago) link

Yeah I think "Dance to the Music" is the ur-example.

bone thugs & prosody (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 12:14 (six years ago) link

Probably a bunch of Motown ensemble stuff does it, too. Jackson 5, Temptations ...

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 13:33 (six years ago) link

where a different member of the band takes a line of the verse

I'd have mentioned "I can't get next to you chickabomchickabom next to you chickabombombom"

Am I the only one that hates that bit? Costello mugging, I call it.

Mark G, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 14:30 (six years ago) link

No, you're not. It's unnecessary.

OTOH the Danko verse of "The Weight" is key.

bone thugs & prosody (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 14:36 (six years ago) link

I like the Costello cameo (he produced it, too). I actually hate the third vocal in "Fascination" where the singer repeatedly does some lame fake soul "yeah yeah yeh-eaaaaaaah."

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 14:40 (six years ago) link

ah, that's Phil going "I'm still here folks"

Mark G, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 14:42 (six years ago) link

Voted for Fascination. One of the best and weirdest songs to make the top five.

Our House and Beat Surrender would be the closest competition. Beat Surrender has somehow become my favourite Jam song over the years.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 14:56 (six years ago) link

The Adam Ant is *OK* but I had to remind myself how it went even though I played that album quite a bit, probably out of a misplaced sense of duty.

Always loved (KF)F.
