Ît's no secret that I am to r&b as Tuomas is to rock. Except, well, not really, as I actually enjoy about 5% of it.

― totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:08 (six years ago)
11 is not a joke post. Some of us in ilm really love TS that much
Woods was my number three.
I need to go back and hear These New Puritans.

It was an interesting strategy for Swift to use the worst two songs as the lead singles.

― TOO LOW, the Curator (imago), Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:41 (six years ago)
Oof.. kind of a long stretch of albums I really don't even want to listen to.
I listened to the entirety of "new breed" after I saw it place and liked it a lot. I should listen to more Dawn Richards.
I gave the Hval a lot of points (#10). I liked Blood Bitch, but this one really clicked for some reason. If I was a better writer I might be able to articulate why I found the juxtaposition of the confessional quality of the lyrics with the guest spoken word pieces, with the slick futuristic environment she creates with the synths so pleasing. And there are just some great melodies here. I am not a lyrics person in general. I like vocals, but I usually miss the actual words, because I'm too focused in on the music itself (and also because I kind of don't give a shit), but from what I pick up on I like the basic essence of the subject matter here.
I won't waste space here trashing the placements of albums from genres I don't like.
Burna Boy and fka Twigs seem really interesting, but just haven't clicked with me on some level. I'm going to give them both another shot, though.
― beard papa, Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:41 (six years ago)
I guess I could start by getting her name correct.
I was glad to see FKA Twigs and Jamila Woods back-to-back as contrast: why I can't stand about R&B developments and what I love.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:43 (six years ago)
I also want to say that I've greatly enjoyed the Stenny, Special Request, and Topdown Dialectic albums recommended in recent posts.
― beard papa, Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:44 (six years ago)
tbh Alfred I wouldn't have pegged you as a neo-soul booster
― totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:44 (six years ago)
Depends how you define neo-soul; I'm an R&B booster, period. As far as trad R&B goes, I've been praising K Michelle for years.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:49 (six years ago)
damn sorry for triggering a recanvassing

re: Jamila, HEAVN was my #1 album that year. Found it on SoundCloud and became totally enamored with its intimacy and bedroom quality, which suited her voice. The way she weaved pop culture references, her poetry, and confessional recordings together felt like a teenager's scrapbook.
Then I saw her at Pitchfork, and she'd brought in her band and transformed these songs into south side church tunes. It was fun for a summer show in Chicago, but I was really disappointed when they properly released the album and had switched out some of the back tracks with live drums and bass.
Continuing with the trend, I had a hard time connecting with the size of Legacy! Legacy! but admittedly seem to be the only person on the planet who prefers HEAVN.
― Indexed, Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:52 (six years ago)
heavn didn't move me, i think she leaned a little too hard on those cute-sy nursery rhyme flows, and the samples felt like they were pandering directly to the internet. legacy legacy was much more self-assured and detail-rich.
― ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:54 (six years ago)
I connected with LEGACY in late July on a road trip for a beach vacation and it sounded great with windows down and a slight buzz.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:58 (six years ago)
certainly the consensus, voodoo, I think HEAVN just hit me in the right place at the right time
