albums of the year

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Friday, 29 March 2019 13:22 (seven years ago)

that is very nice - reminds me a lot of "Sola Sistim" but its less pensive. almost laughed out loud at the Barry White bit, though

frogbs, Friday, 29 March 2019 13:40 (seven years ago)

looking forward to that Necks jam!

maffew12, Friday, 29 March 2019 14:24 (seven years ago)

are these the same Necks that will be on the next swans/gira album?

StanM, Friday, 29 March 2019 15:07 (seven years ago)

yes, they’ve been going for over thirty years as the same trio

The Necks: (Tony Buck, Chris Abrahams, Lloyd Swanton). This transcendental improv combo will play basic tracks to my guitar part on 2 songs, and the songs will be further orchestrated and sung to thereafter. Tony will also play various instruments on other songs.

steven, soda jerk (sic), Friday, 29 March 2019 15:42 (seven years ago)

Thx, interesting.

"dune" is sublime

ufo, Saturday, 30 March 2019 01:50 (seven years ago)

this one is even sublimer

seriously flashing back to hearing "8 Ball" for the first time

frogbs, Thursday, 4 April 2019 19:24 (seven years ago)

you said the magic words ("8 ball")

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 4 April 2019 19:36 (seven years ago)

wow yeah holy shit

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 4 April 2019 19:40 (seven years ago)

Super-pretty. The piano is gorgeous.

DJI, Thursday, 4 April 2019 19:41 (seven years ago)

is the "cowgirl" riff in there? kinda feel like i'm hearing the ghost of it throughout this track

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 4 April 2019 19:43 (seven years ago)

I was gonna say there's a bit of "Rez" in there but that's just their style. I hear it in "Faxed Invitation" too.

frogbs, Thursday, 4 April 2019 20:02 (seven years ago)

i was actually thinking of "rez"! i make this mistake all of the time bc of the everything, everything version

this kicks so much ass

american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 14 April 2019 19:02 (seven years ago)

this would be a nice one to stretch out to 12+ minutes

frogbs, Monday, 15 April 2019 15:16 (seven years ago)

Is there a longer version of Appleshine? It's getting real nice at the end there.

lukas, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 19:14 (seven years ago)

"Appleshine Continuum" is sort of a 47 minute version?

maffew12, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 02:20 (seven years ago)

Oh and... whatever version you have in mind (Youtube weekly release or final "episode" audio release), check the other. Not sure what the difference is with Appleshine specifically, but the video is 7 seconds longer. Custard Speedtalk's video is around 40 seconds longer... someone at borndirty.org was talking about the differences. I dunno. But they're clearly futzing around with a lot of iterations of these tracks

maffew12, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 02:26 (seven years ago)

"Molehill" is around 90 seconds longer on the release with a nice coda... i like it much better than i did at first.

oh these guys

maffew12, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 02:31 (seven years ago)

this would be a nice one to stretch out to 12+ minutes

this week's is 12:15, and tagged as bigroombangersandstadiumtechnoman plus RIYL "Downpipe, Spoonman, Moaner, Threat of Rain, Kittens, Dogman Go Woof" by the band or their people

blokes you can't rust (sic), Thursday, 18 April 2019 19:42 (seven years ago)

sounds like something you'd hear on Disc 4 or 5 of that super-deluxe dubnobass set. which is (obviously) a good thing

frogbs, Thursday, 18 April 2019 19:45 (seven years ago)

oh damn crank it up this piece is killer

frogbs, Thursday, 18 April 2019 20:58 (seven years ago)

Finally catching up to the first two of these "EPs" (the second one is 85 minutes long). The first one's pretty great; I'm not a huge Necks fan but they prove to be excellent collaborators.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Thursday, 18 April 2019 22:06 (seven years ago)

Second one is where it's really at though. It's like the Pearl's Girl EP, but with a monster jam at the end of it

frogbs, Friday, 26 April 2019 02:44 (seven years ago)

Classic

cheese canopy (map), Friday, 26 April 2019 04:04 (seven years ago)

Where and how can I listen to these Necks collaborations?

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 26 April 2019 12:57 (seven years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIDas-lWuhc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhcgUodizro

these are the two Necks collaborations, taken from their recent EPs which are available to stream etc.

ufo, Friday, 26 April 2019 12:59 (seven years ago)

So are all the constituent parts of Drift a collaboration with The Necks? Two episodes each with multiple parts? You can't buy a physical copy anywhere (I know I'm old fashioned)?

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 26 April 2019 13:00 (seven years ago)

no, just those two tracks are collaborative so far. the EPs are only available on streaming and for digital purchase at the moment.

ufo, Friday, 26 April 2019 13:03 (seven years ago)

You can check them all out here:

groovypanda, Friday, 26 April 2019 13:20 (seven years ago)

the extensive sleevenotes to Vol. 2 imply there are more collabs coming

frogbs, Friday, 26 April 2019 13:34 (seven years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJmjNTM5Ba8

buzz on the fan forum is that this is it for episode 3. No Necks to end this one. "Featuring the violin and saxophone of Georgia Ellery and Lewis Evans of Jockstrap and Black Country, New Road"

The posting for "A Very Silent Way" mentioned that they were only in studio with the Necks for a couple of days. "Karl and I spent two glorious days with The Necks at AIR studios in London exploring long improvisations based on our music for Drift and I had the time of my life with these incredibly talented, beautiful people. This initial release represents just a small part of that body of work." Sounds productive.

Loved ep 3

maffew12, Friday, 26 April 2019 20:58 (seven years ago)

Drift 3 out now on iTunes and the like. No word on when/if the series will continue, though I imagine it will shortly...they're on a roll

As much as I've enjoyed the vintage techno/banger side of this on stuff like "Threat of Rain" or "Another Silent Way" I've really been digging the tunes where they just go completely outside of Underworld..."Appleshine Continuum" and "Molehill" especially. hoping to hear more stuff like that.

frogbs, Thursday, 2 May 2019 18:47 (seven years ago)

interesting tidbit here

https://sonar.es/en/2019/artists/underworld

Their latest project, Drift, is a self defined “journey without a fixed destination” consisting of 5 EP’s (and possibly an album)

so that's about 2 1/2 hours of material? very nice.

2 more? This is the only place I've heard anything about this.

maffew12, Thursday, 2 May 2019 20:35 (seven years ago)

You should follow UW on Instagram at least. Good diary/photography stuff from Karl and you keep up with new music and tour dates.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 2 May 2019 20:50 (seven years ago)

xp...yeah I wondered about that too. I'm guessing it was just an off-hand remark and not an actual plan...the whole point of "Drift" is that it's not planned out in advance, right? in this case I noticed that the email announcing the release didn't say "Drift continues xx/xx" like the other two

frogbs, Thursday, 2 May 2019 20:54 (seven years ago)

I thought they said at the start this was going to go on for a year, but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.

And according to some websites, there were “sexcapades.” (James Morrison), Thursday, 2 May 2019 23:46 (seven years ago)

It's not:

DRIFT is an ongoing experiment that will regularly publish new Underworld material – music, film, stories, etc – right here on underworldlive.com. The DRIFT series is an epic year-long road trip by the band in collaboration with Tomato and friends old and new from playwrights to DJs in jazz and techno to painters and poets.

groovypanda, Friday, 3 May 2019 08:12 (seven years ago)

going to add the Episode 3 tracks to my ipod now that they're all out and two of them are longer than the EP versions, and noticed that Pinetum and Poet Cat are only 160kbps

but I can't be bothered to replace with "full"-strength versions and then copy the single artwork over to the 320s

blokes you can't rust (sic), Sunday, 5 May 2019 04:35 (seven years ago)

I found ep. 1 to be a tad underwhelming but ep. 2 is incredible, one of the best things they've released in years imho. I look forward to hearing ep. 3.

pomenitul, Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:05 (seven years ago)

kinda the same way I felt about the Riverruns - the first one was "okay" (with one really great track, at least), but the second one really drove the whole idea home. Same thing happening here. Vol. 3 is very nice...that "do you wanna buy my car?" refrain has been in my head all week

apparently they're gonna clear out more stuff from the vaults in the next few weeks, can't wait
