so far i'm really enjoying it, but I'm not incredibly familiar with their output -- i've really only heard pieces here and there. is this kind of a departure for them or not really?

yeah, it's a two-disc thing -- the first one "mosquito," the second "see through"

"mosquito" is similar in intent to a lot of their releases (slowly building minimalist jazz) but it uses quite a different palette to the one they've used before.

"see though" is similar to a previous release "aether" in that is has long sections of sustained chords drifting into space but the spaces in the new piece can be minutes of dead silence.

so it's the same but not the same as previous cds. if you like "mosquito" try the more drum based "hanging garden" or "drive by" and don't forget to get the very best of their live improv pieces "piano bass drums"

they're playing a gig at the Melbourne Town Hall soon, with Chris Abrahams ditching the piano for that venue's huuuuuuuge pipe organ. I may go to that, I think.

hmmm, that should be terrific. his organ playing is under-utilised in the band. he's going to be playing at the sydney "what is music" festival with backing by the loop orchestra.
