"Style doesn't equal craftsmanship at all. Look at, say, Andy Gill of Gang of Four. The man probably couldn't play a proper scale if you put a gun to his head, but he has more **STYLE** than a quadrillion seasoned sessioneers altogether."

Actually, there are plenty of examples in Andy's playing where he pulls off a little licks here and there...the guy knew what he was doing for sure. Just because he played a loud, abrasive, solid state amp, doesn't make him a bad player with good "style." He had both.

d. boon then

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alright, fair enough, Party44. Maybe Gill's a bad example (he is, after all, a successful producer now, so he's probaly a bit more proficient). How about someone lower down the food chain like.....say...... Jon Spencer? Ron Asheton? Johnny Ramone? Greg Ginn?

Also from http://www.dmbcommunity.com/forums//showthread.php?s=&postid=43444#post43444

I can't beleive the amount of morons on that board. I did a search on it and i found that many of them like 'Indie/Alternative' bands that can barely play their instruments, AND WORST OF ALL, They like commercialised Top 40 Music like Britney & Justin Timberlake!!! HAHAHA
Come on people, lets take on these morons!!!!

Dave Matthews Band : Name Your Reasons Why They Are So Bad & Hated.

How Can ANYONE Rip Dave Matthews then admit to liking manufactured chart pop? We win this argument so easy it hurts.
I cant believe how many nerds are on that board. I saw Guided By Voices once and they were so drunk they could barely play their 2 chord songs. Thats the so called 'Alternative' music Nerds worship.
And as for Britney and Justin....... sheesh.

Ben Jones, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

whatta wimp!

Hasn't DMB been just as successful as the "manufactured chart pop" only with a different demographic? What, does having a violinist in your group exempt you from getting called a pop band?

Oh Totally, I get your point, and I wasn't trying to argue with you, it's just that I kinda thought the same thing once, but have realized just how good the man was with his instrument.

I am of the school of thought that style AND craftsmanship or skills make a good player. Seriously, very few people are moved by someone like Yngwie Malmsteen or as well by somebody like Jandek. To me it's the combination of physical skills and mental substance that makes someone "good" at an instrument, a totally subjective thing regardless.

So, is this what is was like when The Gathering invaded way back when?

"How about someone lower down the food chain like.....say...... Jon Spencer? Ron Asheton? Johnny Ramone? Greg Ginn? "

D. Boon and Greg Ginn are both pretty skilled guitar players - I'd say the best counter-example would be Billy Childish.

Ha Alex, I was going to give you shit about that!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hey, just cause I like DMB doesn't mean I don't like TOOL, Van Halen, Rush , Norah Jones, and Stevie Wonder. People who have like dmb for more than 3 years are the least closed minded people in the world in the subject of music. And yes, DMB is very eclectic with sound of Bluegrass and jazz. And what makes people think it's exclusively for white -middle class? 3 of it's 5 members are black.

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

and 3 of it's 5 million fans are black, guh-dunk guh-dunk dunk

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Guilty as charged.

" I dare say that without Killing Joke, most of your precious "heavy sounding" bands wouldn't even exist. Killing Joke have indulged in a myriad of different musical styles and sounds well beyond the monochromatic 'heavy', yet when they choose to go that route, there is no one mightier. To judge Killing Joke by one or two tracks is an excercise in blind-sighted stupidity. Do your homework before submitting an opinion! Moreover, if you're put off by the conceptual/lyrical content of Killing Joke, why not toddle home and slap on a Pixies or Cheap Trick album and celebrate the meaningless and banal. At least Killing Joke have something to say. You may not like it, agree with it...or even understand it....but at least there something of substance there. Killing Joke credit their audience with higher standards and a modicum of intelligence. Try getting that from Korn."

I'd like to think I've mellowed a bit since then.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

what board are you guys talking about anyway?

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Avast, maties! Lower the mains and heave to. These scurvy jam-band-loving sea dogs will not take us alive!

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

just throw some soap and water their way, that should scare 'em off

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Naga,...back in 2001, someone started a thread much like this one decrying MY favorite band (Killing Joke, if you hadn't guessed) and a simillar phenomenon happened. My little rant at you about using sweeping superlatives makes me look like quite a bit of a hypocrite (especially when you read the passage of mine I just cited from way back when). So, y'know, whatever. Like who you like. Who cares what other people say?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

My point wasn't so much that you don't already like the artists I listed as much as it was I think that they do the "skilled craftman" thing you're attributing to DMB much better.

Your argument about people who've like DMB being the most open-minded about music is completely false in my experience, as the people I know who knew them when they were a jam band playing colleges in upstate New York tend to stick exclusively with the Shawn Colvin/Meredith Brooks/DMB/Hootie and the Blowfish/Sting axis of music and consider U2 to be the outer limits of acceptability. Your argument about them not being exclusively for white middle-class is accurate; they're aimed at black middle-class, too (although few would admit to listening to them, particularly when faced by the nu-soul/back-to-hip-hop mafia).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

is the nu-soul mafia anything like the gay mafia?

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Right on, Alex, thank you.
The only reason I came here is cause I saw a post on a dmb board that said their were a million people ripping on Dave, and we need some people backing him up." Well it's a lot of fun, but I don't think I'm getting anywhere.

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, only instead of being gay they all have fucked-up hair and smell like patchouli. (OH NO BLACK HIPPIES!)

Alex does have a valid point; one reason why people may be coming down harder on naga than he/she actually deserves is because his initial post reads as Yet Another Fanboy Attack and people tend to want to jump up and down on posts like that until they squeal. (Well, I do anyway.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

(To put it another way, a good portion of the DMB-ripping is hyperbole for comedic effect, so don't take it so personally. Obviously I do not want to see Dave Matthews gnawing holes in scrotums, because EW.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, I guess I just like arguing with people. It's pretty hilarious sometimes

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Maybe I'll stick around

Welcome to ILM, Naga. You're welcome to post anytime. Most people here have different tastes and opinions on music. Hell i even saw Rush fans on here once.
Fighting in here is fun and hilarious. Thats why everyone comes here.

Ben Jones, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

What?, Are you ripping on Rush, you asshole. I wish I could find out where you lived and beat your ass in.

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why isn't this board just a chat room? This just takes longer to post a message, which is usually really short anyway

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

My next band will be called the New Soul Mafia.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's hard for people on this board to agree on what they like or dislike. Try these threads for starters:

Bands that EVERYONE likes

Bands that EVERYONE hates

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Chatrooms generally aren't archived and dug up years later for more discussion.

www.ilxor.com hate DMB

We have a slogan. Or a new one.

Heya Naga. Me, I lurv Rush, the new album's great. I also think Dave Matthews Band are a blight upon the world, but I would. ;-) Favorite band is My Bloody Valentine -- check them out sometime. Welcome to us. Alex stuck around, you should too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

thoss two threads: BANDS EVERYONE LOVES, BANDS EVERYONE HATES, sounds to me like a waste of time on this site, I don't think any 3 people here could agree on any one thing to save there lives.

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

That was kind of the point: to see if despite the odds, there was one band everyone could agree on. I think it remains unresolved, although I seem to remember that we never found an XTC hater on the board.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yea, XTC is pretty great. All the jam rock kids and I bond over them.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

BEST THREDD IN THE WORLD!

thanks everyone. i can't say anythingabout DMB that hasn't already been said. well, i can try "shiny-chinned smuggorama overload" but that's not really helpful.

the travis/stereophonics/ocs = dmb/hootie/cunting crows is spot-on, well done. can we all go home now?

Charlie (Charlie), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

the only artist we even came close to agreeing on as great was James Brown.

What that says about "our" collective tastes, I'm not entirely sure...

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Actually, I honestly would really like to like DMB, they're talented (I got a Vic Wooten/Carter Beauford DVD that is, like, WOW), their songs generally don't offend me or piss me off, they fight the good fight in that they're very distinct and completely not something that should have mainstream appeal yet it does, I've even seen them in concert a few times, but DANGIT WHY DON'T I FIND ANYTHING I ACTUALLY LIKE ABOUT IT!?!

Oh well. *sigh*

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm just average, common too
I'm just like him, the same as you
I'm everybody's brother and son
I ain't different from anyone
It ain't no use a-talking to me
It's just the same as talking to you.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

right on man, I think we should just leave it at that.

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

We had all uniformly agreed on Dave Matthews Band as being the most hated until you appeared haha. Guess no-one else is gonna stick up for them though.
One thing. no-one ever agrees on anything here. Especially between the 'rock' fans and 'Pop' fans.

Ben Jones, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'll stick up for DMB. Alex in NY, check this week's TV Guide for the incomplete Simpsons quote you paraphrased. RE: DMB, I find their music interesting; they are one of the few bands out there to incorporate violins, saxophones, and flutes into their music. Their music defies classification, so, if for no other reason, they are worthwhile for stretching the boundaries of music genres. You really can't fence them into any type of music - sometimes they sound like bluegrass, sometimes they sound like country, sometimes they sound like rock.

Secondly, I think the lyrics are stirring and evocative; they make me feel the emotion that the song is trying to convey. I also think that Dave Matthews is a very honest songwriter - he really seems to feel what he is writing. As to the lyrics being misogynistic, I don't see any evidence.

RE: the fans - I am not an attorney nor am I an accountant; I am not in college presently, and I have never been inside a frat house (personal choice). I also bathe daily, brush my hair, and find patchouli nauseating. I have never been nor will I ever be a hippie.

Enough said on my part.

DianaM41, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 23:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

" Their music defies classification, so, if for no other reason, they are worthwhile for stretching the boundaries of music genres."
y'wot? Are you serious?
What other music do you think does this?
I can assure you many more bands streth the boundaries of music genres.
Saxophone,Flutes, Guitars, Violins? Try Funkadelic, Godspeed You Black Emperor, (even Jethro Tull), King Crimson, Miles Davis, Spiritualized. And im deliberately trying to not be obscure here. Theres many more lesser known bands, who all push boundaries back way further than DMB.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 23:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Definitely the case when it comes political statements that are at least coherent and easy to read.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 23:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

What do DMB fans think about Nirvana (and grunge/indie rock in general)?
I always see them as preferring pearl jam as theyre better musicians and how much they hate Nirvana. Thats what theyre like in my personal experience.
And most think Alternative means Creed/DMB/REM.
But hey i'm aware it is a gross generalisation based on 5 people i know.
