Whats everyones reasons for hating them? Particularly interested in the views of Americans.

John McAteer, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:31 (eighteen years ago) link

The guy sings like a muppet.

hstencil, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Hes a 90s sting. he's Smug. Yuppie music. Hes boring. People who like terrible bands like Counting Crows and Phish like him. The amount of people who wear suits and work in banks/accountancy firms and like DMB is like 99% urgh. Theres Sooo many. But i'll leave that to others in the thread.

Jimmy Corkhill, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:36 (eighteen years ago) link

that F*CKING charelston-type dance he does. AAAAAAHHAHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!

and that f*cking "hike up your skirt a little more, and show your world to me" is so misogynistic, hateful, smug aaahaaajhahdsdsa;dfdsal!!!!

he needs to die, and I say this kind of thing rarely.

Which Muppet btw? If Animal was in them they would be so much better.

Jimmy Corkhill, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:40 (eighteen years ago) link

oh yeah, I forgot about his fetishization of black musicians. really, can we get a UN resolution to kill him!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:40 (eighteen years ago) link

[warning: deliberate flamebait imminent]:

but without black people, he wouldn't be funky!

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Any real or musical reasons to hate him? He does all sorts of music. Acoustic stuff, does good improvisational stuff, is great live, has respect of fellow musicians like sting, peter gabriel, allanis, sheryl crow,Meredith Brooks,Counting Crows,Santana. All the mebers are great musicians. And the actual songs are good.
He wouldnt have such a rabid cult fanbase if he wasnt any good. The likes of Britney would love to work with him.

John Mcateer, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Which Muppet? Why Eddie Vedder, of course!

I don't know about this whole fetishization of black musicians thing, though.

hstencil, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Which Muppet btw?
You better not say Roosavelt Franklin! (That's Lenny Kravitz)

Just thinking of why I hate DMB is almost as tedious as his music. So I have no answer because I can't be bothered to think of one.

When I used to live in C'ville he stole my table at a sushi restaurant. I was really hungry too.

He spawned that John Mayer and that HORRIBLE "Your Body Is a Wonderland" which really is a crime against humanity.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Just the whole combination of being so very very uninteresting and yet being so widely worshipped, is the main reason.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Least we witness all the unviersity students forming bands to sound JUST like him. And they all suck too.

"Your choice, Ms. Spears -- the Neptunes or Dave Matthews?"

"Hmmm..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:52 (eighteen years ago) link

"Any real or musical reasons to hate him?"

Sure, plenty. The production is empty and lifeless with no surprises or innovative ideas, his vocal style is grating and cloying, I hate that "funky acoustic guitar strumming" thing he does, and on and on.

"He does all sorts of music."

This is not a virtue in and of itself.

"Acoustic stuff"

So?

"does good improvisational stuff"

No. Only if you consider hippie-jam-band technique to be "improvisational". (I do not).

"is great live"

Never seen him.

" has respect of fellow musicians like sting,peter gabriel, allanis,sheryl crow,Meredith Brooks,Counting Crows,Santana."

I don't respect a single one of those people - the endorsements are empty.

"All the mebers are great musicians."

Technically proficient /= great.

"And the actual songs are good."

Nope.

"He wouldnt have such a rabid cult fanbase if he wasnt any good."

That's what people said about Hitler.

"The likes of Britney would love to work with him. "

And this is of importance why?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I remember reading an interview with him once where he was talking about how much he loved oral sex and how he could survive by just drinking/eating? the fluids of women. I say eeewwwwwww? I mean oral sex is a-ok in my book but between his comments of bowel movements and just the thought of his big assclown head shoved between some poor woman's legs...shudder.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:59 (eighteen years ago) link

group named after its leader is usually bad. Dave Matthews is such a nothing name to begin with. We like to call them/him the "Dave Matthews," just as it's fun to refer to the "Medeski, Martin and Woods" or the "Sonic Youths." Or for that matter the "Ya La Tengos, they are my favorite band!"

I never understood all the 'Sounds like Hootie & The Blowfish and Sting" stuff. he sounds like neither. And its not like DMB has stolen any songs off him. DMB songs dont sound like anyone elses. Especially Hootie & The Blowfish.
Crash Into me and Space Between are 2 of the best songs written in recent years. Something Sting, Hootie or any of ILMers fave pop or indie bands could write(in my own personal opinion of course) I dont want to start fights. I just dont understand why he is so hated. But maybe thats because hes unknown over here in the UK. Most Americans seem to have an opinion on him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:47 (eighteen years ago) link

McAteet: even the Dave Matthews fans I know think the Space Between is awful; why do you think he eventualy released the lillywhite sessions - becuz all his fans were bitching about how awful everyday (and in particular the space between) was. Dave Matthews came from the same circuit as Hootie and has the same fans, the only difference is that Darius Rucker has a better voice than Dave Matthews and they made the mistake of having their first album be an impossible to followup megaseller. I doubt there's a single article on the Dave Matthews from 95 that doesn't paint them as the 'new' Hootie.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:49 (eighteen years ago) link

...they made the mistake of having their first album be an impossible to followup megaseller.

To play devil's advocate (heh) for a second - how could they have "controlled" sales of their first alb?

hstencil, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Ping Pong's first track was about as deep as it needs to be, now just extend it seven minutes with bongos and play it at the appropriate speed for bong hits.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Dave Matthews...funky.
I'm sorry, but this does not compute. Those two ideas are mutually exclusive.

I'm sure Dave Matthews and his band are perfectly nice guys, but y'know what? Their music is fucking * B O R I N G *.....which is, as far as I'm concerned, a worse crime that sounding like a muppet (which I don't hear at all). Dave Gedge of the Wedding Present sounds like Muppet, and I loved them. Dave Matthews Band (and...really, couldn't he have come up with a decent name for the band at least?) are just dull, dull and thrice verily dull.

think there are a good number of people that saw the DMB scene in Lady Bird and had a reevaluation of a band like DMB they felt ashamed to like at that age.

What’s cool abt them to me at the time was they seemed kind of sophisticated. Also it made a lot of sense of you were into like, classic rock, world music, jazz, jam bands, just an amalgamation of stuff that felt right at the time

All of Before These Crowded Streets is legit. I suspect it was at least partially inspired by OK Computer: it's the only one of their pre-Stand albums that feels like it has a cohesive narrative structure; it's full of religious imagery; the growling angry Dave energy on "The Last Stop," "Don't Drink the Water," and "Halloween" is very "You don't remember, you don't remember/ Why don't you remember my name?" Also the album that I think showcases Carter the most.

I dreamed I was in this really weird musical last night with an abusive director that would SCREAM at you if you did something he didn't like or get a line wrong, and part of the show involved me playing "Crash into Me", except the lyrics were different, and since I haven't played that song on a guitar since 1998, I was messing it up.

the story of this dream is now being worked into a DMB-themed musical titled "It's Just Too Much"

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 16:52 (one month ago) link

oh yeah Rapunzel's worse than Crash's "And I come into you"! Also this:

Pantala Naga Pampa

Track 1 on
Before These Crowded Streets
The song’s title comes from a phrase an Indian chef for the band would utter in Tamil. In English, the phrase means “I have a python in my pants.”

the crazy part about this stuff -- and what makes before these crowded streets so interesting i think -- is it really goes against the grain of what dmb's like ... audience & marketing & the cliche version of them really is, to me. As if their entire image was about smuggling this dark brooding stuff into ... sorry john mayer ... a john mayer record, him as like a distillation of what made them appealingly fratty

or maybe at the time bc of grunge this kind of sour energy fit completely within frattiness & i'm just seeing it backwards, as darkness kind of bled from frat music in the 00s

John Lakeman gives pipe lecture (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 21:41 (one month ago) link

I wondered how much more dark brooding is on Before these Crowded Streets than sous la table. I sometimes think the biggest difference is the choice of lead single. So I tried pairing up similar tracks:

life is good song: The Best of What's Around - Pantala Naga Pampa
just goofin song: What Would You Say - Stay (Wasting Time)
thinkin bout stuff song: Satellite - Spoon
internal suffering growler song: Rhyme & Reason - Halloween
uncomfortably "sexy" song: Lover Lay Down - Rapunzel
things ain't so bad, i really should be happy song: Jimi Thing - Pig
spooky, driving verses with happy chorus song: Warehouse - The Stone
carpe diem(B): Ants Marching - The Dreaming Tree

This is where the pairings become worse:
Pay for What You Get - The Last Stop I'd say these are both dark and brooding though with themes of very different scale. I'd say 'Pay For What You Get' is darker due to the more personal scale and the lack of hope/remedy.

Typical Situation - Don't Drink the Water Typical situation obviously inverts the dark brooding in the chorus.

Dancing Nancies - Crush Lyrics are obv different, but I swear you could play the 'Crush' bassline over 'Dancing Nancies' and it would fit. please try it in your head. These songs are similar.
