Never thought I'd choose a Haneke film over a list of other nominees. Lincoln second.

Trying to think of another Austrian apart from Arnie who can present the award to Haneke

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:59 (eleven years ago) link

Lincoln first.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:03 (eleven years ago) link

have only seen 5/9, Lincoln in a slamdunk

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:06 (eleven years ago) link

Lincoln for me.

ryan, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:06 (eleven years ago) link

Worst is also regrettably easy to pick here.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:08 (eleven years ago) link

Silver Linings Playbook?

ryan, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:10 (eleven years ago) link

Bear in mind that I've seen Les Mis.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:13 (eleven years ago) link

there are at least two I'm steering clear of bcz the possibility that they are worse than Amour is enough.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:14 (eleven years ago) link

It would be tragic to have to admit that there are worse things than good movies.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:14 (eleven years ago) link

haven't seen Pi or Les Miz

Les Piz

Should I see any of these?

I feel like Argo could take best pic, which would be hilarious IMO

uh, it's "the front runner"

Hollywood sucks itself, bring on the trophies

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:26 (eleven years ago) link

Argo will win

ryan, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:27 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, right now everyone's saying Argo vs. Silver Linings, but it's always unwise to bet on the split, so maybe Lincoln gets sucked unenthusiastically to the top.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:28 (eleven years ago) link

the final runway plane/car chase alone should disqualify it.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:31 (eleven years ago) link

this list is reminding me that i have been a very "bad" filmgoer this year because i have seen none of the options

yeah it isnt like i havent had time! i just watched "revolver" for fucks sake, i am def not hitting home runs here

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:33 (eleven years ago) link

I'm sure a lot of those flix are superior to Les Mis.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:36 (eleven years ago) link

I have seen exactly one of these (Argo) which was entertaining enough up until the artificially tense ending where they wanted you to wonder "is that jeep going to stop the plane?" but everyone in my party kept wondering "is that dude in the jeep going to get sucked into the plane engine?"

also seeing what the dude Affleck played actually looked like after the movie was a massive lol, considering how hard they tried to get everyone else to look like the ppl they were playing

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:37 (eleven years ago) link

Seriously, though, should I watch any of these? I'm planning on seeing Amour. Is Django any good? Lincoln?

© all the feelings (Austerity Ponies), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:38 (eleven years ago) link

Argo was decent enough; I wouldn't make an effort to see it though

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:39 (eleven years ago) link

Argo was not bad but had these incredibly dumb stretches, and all the Hollywood shit seemed to exist to garner laughs from easily pleased industry crowds.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:42 (eleven years ago) link

oh man, I can't watch the Oscars to the end if Clooney & Affleck are accepting at the same time, ugh

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:44 (eleven years ago) link

in Argo, the part of "Hollywood" is played by Katherine Heigl

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:45 (eleven years ago) link

I've seen Pi, Django, Silver Linings, ZDT and Argo. I wouldn't want to vote for any of them.

'lincoln' is prob my favorite spielberg ever, tho i haven't seen 'munich' yet.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 19:31 (eleven years ago) link

Of the ones I've seen, it's Lincoln > Zero Dark Thirty >>> Argo >> Silver Linings Playbook.

But I'm still planning on seeing Beasts, Amour, and Django (at least) before the deadline, so I'll hold off on voting.

jaymc, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 19:41 (eleven years ago) link

Argo was a more convincing nat'l security state commercial than ZDT.

Among recent Spielberg nominees:

Munich > Lincoln > War Horse

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:16 (eleven years ago) link

I think Spielberg values the Oscar very highly.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:16 (eleven years ago) link

I'm still amazed Lincoln has made $167 million in the U.S. alone (and counting).

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:17 (eleven years ago) link

he's already had his Oscar night of triumph (one more than Hitchcock) w/ Schindler's List, and possibly will win director again as he did with Ryan.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:34 (eleven years ago) link

Lincoln would have joined Bigelow's other war film as the most decent BP winner of the last fifteen years

I'll skip my solitary love for American Beauty (back off!), but better than No Country?

clemenza, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:38 (eleven years ago) link

I think No Country was a legitimate contender for the actual best film of that year, and I think that's the only time in recent memory where the Oscars agreed with me. THL and, if Lincoln were to win, would be two actually good movies that have won which would be a welcome break. The Oscars bar is pretty low.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:40 (eleven years ago) link

I forgot about No Country.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:42 (eleven years ago) link

it's shocking to realize how dreary and instantly forgettable most BP winners have been since 1980 at least. 'schindler' probably deserved it in '94.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:44 (eleven years ago) link

uh, 93.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:45 (eleven years ago) link

I think many have fallen outta love with it, but I still think The Departed is awesome.

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:05 (eleven years ago) link

It's a lot of fun, but doesn't deserve to be anywhere near an award.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:06 (eleven years ago) link

you are correct~!

xpost

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:06 (eleven years ago) link

i feel like it being a lot of fun is a lot more than could be said for most BP winners or even nominees in recent times. just looking at a list of nominees from some years makes me nod off.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:07 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I'll join in and say the NCFOM win was the only time in recent memory I thought the Academy was OTM. What happened to The Master this year? Some too-hot-to-handle Scientology business? Haven't seen the movie, but assumed it was a shoe-in for a BP nom.

circa1916, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:10 (eleven years ago) link

c'mon -- wouldn't you rather watch Out of Africa or The Accidental Tourist

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:10 (eleven years ago) link

I get that the whole consolation Oscar thing pissed ppl off, but I'd even defend the film as a worthy BP winner. Also, remember when that same year Little Muss Sunshine was thought to be a credible front runner?

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:10 (eleven years ago) link

i never did do my poll of worst of the 90s best picture noms after the 80s one

let's go do some crimes (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:10 (eleven years ago) link

If I felt Academy voters went for it just because it was a blast I'd be cool with it, but they never vote for fun. They genuinely found some sort of gravitas in it.

The Master had a decidedly mixed reception.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:11 (eleven years ago) link

I just remembered that I've never actually seen Out of Africa.

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:11 (eleven years ago) link

I hate it already.

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:12 (eleven years ago) link

Letters from Iwo Jima was the best of 2007's bp noms, but not picking the Queen, LMS, or fucking Babel makes me a bit thankful for The Departed's win. So glad I wasn't around to watch that year's.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:14 (eleven years ago) link

Robert Redford plays a britishes Robert Redford.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:15 (eleven years ago) link

A win for Lincoln would, I suppose, return Oscar to Good Middlebrow Winners.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:16 (eleven years ago) link

I'll take it over The King's Speech and The Artist version of Middlebrow.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:17 (eleven years ago) link

oh yah

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:20 (eleven years ago) link

Harvey Weinstein just gave an interview where he implied he shoulda made Anderson recut The Master.

Argo not even getting a director's nom and now being the favourite is still strange to me.

There's a theory that's the REASON it became the favorite.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:25 (eleven years ago) link

Oh I think I read that somewhere. All the actor's pissed that Benji didn't get the directing nod so they're gonna make it best picture? Has a film ever won w/o the directing nomination?

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:28 (eleven years ago) link

Driving Miss Daisy

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:29 (eleven years ago) link

The directors' branch (who nominate the directors) have marginally better taste than the rest of AMPAS.

Driving Miss Daisy is substantially better than Argo

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:33 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe I should see it again.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:34 (eleven years ago) link

Lincoln is the most destined to win BP film since Titanic. Movies like these are why the Oscars exist.

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:34 (eleven years ago) link

It certainly seems that way, but it's a very talky, unflashy film.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:36 (eleven years ago) link

Quite cynical as well.
