1962's Oscar Nominees

For me, it's either To Kill a Mockingbird or ... um, yeah, it's probably that one. Among the other four bloaty nominees, I'd definitely lean toward the fruity showtunery of Music Man over the more ponderous masculinity (or thereabouts) of the other three.

I tried to watch TKAM a few weeks ago -- I gave up.

Try watching The Longest Day.

Probably. According to some narratives I've seen, The Longest Day was considered a frontrunner in this race.

btw, on the first radio show I ever did, "Rock Island" was the second track.

The best American film made this year was Ed Emshwiller's Thanatopsis. But five-minute films are not eligible for Best Picture (btw what is the shortest a Best Picture winner can be?). In addition to Morbs' noms (although I have slight issues with Ride the High Country), these feature-length USA films were all better than the Best Picture noms:

I've never seen The Music Man either, not all of it, anyway. Surprisingly, the only one of these that really sticks with me is Mutiny, although I've only ever seen Lawrence on a smaller screen.

Advise and Consent, The Manchurian Candidate, and Ride the High Country, in that order, are my movies of the year.

Advise, Opium and Baby Jane in the lineup would've turned the world gay, but for the better.

That said, Baby Jane did get about a half-dozen nods in other categories, if memory serves.

Yeah, two undeserving acting nods.

For English-language, I'd go with Lolita, The Manchurian Candidate, Long Day's Journey Into Night, Advise and Consent, and either Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? or Carnival of Souls for the fifth spot. Vivre sa Vie for foreign, although I didn't like it as much on second viewing. I like a couple of the nominees fine (the two most obvious), but neither of them are anywhere close to being among my favorite films.

srsly, O'Toole is just a prince in this movie. My favourite performance/film character ever.

I saw The Connection, finally, this year. Top 10 US for sure.
