I always just use google with site:ilxor.com "search term". Much better than the native search.

i'm generally not a big fan of the "it works despite its flaws" genre of art criticism and thought this was pretty much maudlin trash but i'm glad it was meaningful to other people

― k3vin k., Sunday, June 18, 2017 5:36 PM (twenty-two minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

this got me thinking about how lots of the art that is most 'meaningful' to me is stuff that I would probably struggle to defend from criticisms that it was maudlin/trashy/badly-made etc, is there a thread about flawed art that is meaningful to you? (specifically 'meaningful', as distinct from stuff you appreciate on a so-bad-it's-good level, if that's a legitimate distinction?)

there was a recent thread about favorite albums that are not critically regarded. can't remember what is was called right now but a quick search revealed the very similar: Critically Reviled Albums That You Actually Enjoy.

new noise, Sunday, 18 June 2017 17:31 (six years ago) link

found it: What's the least acclaimed album you love?

Did we ever have a thread about late-90s/early-00s album cover aesthetic? I vaguely remember this being addressed - just this time when everyone was using this Impact-style font and lots of minimalist artwork, usually with LOTS of white space that looked rubbish as soon as the CD case got cracked:

Manic Street Preachers - Lifeblood
Charlatans - Wonderland

are two I can think of but I'm sure we had a thread about it

trying to find an ILM thread about artists who arent really covered any more but are still massively popular, or even more popular than they were when they were being covered?

Is there a thread for general bookselling stories/concerns?

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 25 August 2017 12:25 (six years ago) link

Are you thinking of something like this?

selling used books: classic or frustrating dud?

streeps of range (wins), Friday, 25 August 2017 12:27 (six years ago) link

I looking for somewhere to put this awesome link, basically: http://www.pajiba.com/book_reviews/did-this-book-buy-its-way-onto-the-new-york-times-bestseller-list.php

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 25 August 2017 12:44 (six years ago) link

Which seems contrary to the purpose on that thread, in that the book at the top of an NYT Bestseller List is not only not used, but may have never taken corporeal form.

There was a thread about old ilx posts that reverberate in your mind a lot, not excelsiors or "striking imagery" posts but just ones that you think about a lot

One of those thread titles where the concept can be stated in so many different generic ways that it's unsearchable.

Oh wait, but that one is locked for some reason. Is there another similar thread?

a politics/theory thread, not one of the main chronological rolling threads, that gets into a big discussion of right-wing thinking marked by an absolutely enormous clusterfuck argument between mordy and frederik over moldbug. feel like it was within the last year, cannot find with google for the life of me (maybe it's de-indexed?).

gimme the beet poison, free my soul (Doctor Casino), Friday, 24 November 2017 19:05 (six years ago) link

j/k, thanks mordy. i'd remembered it as a bigger clusterfuck than it was - think i just read it all at once as a catch-up on a bus ride and it felt like it must have gone on for days.

i cannot seem to manage to find the thread on the film "the disaster artist", directed by james franco, about tommy wiseau's film "the room"

perhaps it is mainly discussed on Tommy Wiseau's "The Room"

oh thanks! I guess that wouldn't be a great thread to revive just for that purpose though. Just wanted to mention that I have both strep and flu at the moment and for the first couple days I really sounded like elliot when I talked.
