I didn't say it redeemed the movie, & I can't separate visuals from content either. But I would still recommend seeing this movie in a theater for the experience & bc I've been wayyyy off on predicting who would love it & who would hate it. I thought It was really shallow upon reflection, but it was a great movie theater experience - packed crowd in a huge auditorium on a Saturday night.

The revolution those conservatives talk about, this is it. They're gladly taking Russian assistance, judging by their, at best, blase attitude towards the whole thing. They like Putin's society far better than the direction the US has been going in.

I think we've got a coup going on, baby.

― carpet_kaiser, Saturday, 30 September 2017 22:07 (yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Think about this: the oligarchy that's been trying to seize power (Citizens United, most recently), will gain even more wealth and power under such a system. Social conservatives will get their race dominance and beloved authoritarian leader.

The NYT's owners, NBC, CBS, et al, were way more afraid of Sanders than Trump, and even threw a few bones Trump's away in hedging against Clinton.

Whoowee, we've got some crazy shit going on. It's going to royally suck for minorities and the professional, educated class if things really go to shit, unless you get comfy kissing these peoples' asses. Not that it'd be much different than now anyway...

"I wish news orgs would refrain from issuing headlines that mislead the reader into believing that Trump said something mind-blowingly offensive when there are so very many instances in any given day when similar headlines would be wholly accurate."

I agree; for instance, his comment today that Katrina was a 'real catastrophe'. I'm pretty sure I know what he meant; it sounds bad, but I don't think he meant it to be as bad as it sounds. He's just incapable of making anything sound good, ever.

i remember shortly after battleship was announced, my friend and i came up with a really great pitch for a police procedural/serial-killer movie based on "guess who." cops getting new information on suspects, slamming desks, "damn! that rules him out!" "are we sure it can't be bernard?" "he's got glasses!" "shit!" then the phone rings, a creepy voice on the other line: guess who? end trailer.

the phone felt like a sell out. This isn't Dream Phone. It is Guess Who. The creepy voice should have come from a face concealed by the open lid of a briefcase or the screen of a laptop.

you are juror number 144 and we will excuse you (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 12 October 2017 20:12 (six years ago) link

hahaha fair. i think we just thought creepy voice on the other line is a solid trailer moment regardless of how terrible your movie concept is. but any decent adaptation would be constantly finding situations where people could slam things closed. i neglected to make clear that that was how they would handle the framed photos of suspects, once ruled out.

At the Interior Department's headquarters in downtown Washington, Secretary Ryan Zinke has revived an arcane military ritual that no one can remember ever happening in the federal government.

A security staffer takes the elevator to the seventh floor, climbs the stairs to the roof and hoists a special secretarial flag whenever Zinke enters the building. When the secretary goes home for the day or travels, the flag — a blue banner emblazoned with the agency's bison seal flanked by seven white stars representing the Interior bureaus — comes down.

In Zinke's absence, the ritual is repeated to raise an equally obscure flag for Deputy Secretary David Bernhardt.

Responding this week to questions from The Washington Post, a spokeswoman for Zinke, a former Navy SEAL commander, defended the Navy flag-flying tradition as "a major sign of transparency."
