But, tbh, if Ned Stark was your favorite character, well, you're watching wrong.

If Arya and Tyrion aren't your favorite characters you're a horrible person.

like once I realized that offing characters was like "a thing" it made the books even more addictive imo

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

It's weird. He's a lot more beloved than i thought.

Number None, Monday, 13 June 2011 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

he's a dude

I'm sure they'll get over it after next week's tho

I dig the idea of Ned's character, but in reality he's pretty damn boring. You don't have to agree with a character's motivations to find them completely engaging.

eh i dont really blame them, sean bean is the biggest or second-biggest name in the cast by a very long shot, plus he was the focus of the marketing campaign--if i was watching the show w/out having read the books id be telling myself "no way theyre going to kill off sean bean, itd be like killing off tony soprano/steve buscemi in that other show/jimmy mcnulty"

Yeah seems like casting Bean as Eddard was super canny---get viewers in the door with a big name actor who's not likely to commit to years of television and hook them on the rest

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

btw is tyrions accent getting worse as the show progresses or is it just me

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

can I just say again that Joffrey is a shit?

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

Hopefully the money they save on Bean's salary can be spent on some BATTLES. my only minor complaint about this episode.

Number None, Monday, 13 June 2011 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

they cast Joffrey perfectly, I just want to strangle the little shit every time he's onscreen

they pretty neatly dodged having to depict anything, didn't they

I sorta don't care about the battles---I'm in it for the ~machinations~

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

I lolled pretty hardcore when Tyrion got trampled by his own men

xxp: the kids on this show are uniformly amazing

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

er or rather xp

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

Nah i know it was done well but i do hope there's a bit more of an epic feel going forward

Number None, Monday, 13 June 2011 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

btw where's the thread where we can talk about the books? I'm on iPhone and can't search for it

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

George R. R. Martin

we could revive this

I keep imagining the score being replaced with Mirrored and Gloss Drop

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

the thought did occur to me

this is where we've been talking 'bout the books:

Anticipating A Feast For Crows by George R. R. Martin (Nov. 9)

Dug the scene between Catelyn and Robb about marrying one of Lord Frey's daughters. Possibly her most likeable moment - "One was..."

iirc martin only really depicts two battles in the books

☂ (max), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

Doesn't Tyrion actually fight for a bit before getting knocked out in the book though? I'd just like it if the scope of these things was conveyed a little more. I understand that's difficult to do.

Number None, Monday, 13 June 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

yeah tbf this is one of the battles that he DOES depict, i was just thinking that martin doesnt dwell overlong on big army battles. he likes fights though.

☂ (max), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

Having the POV character miss the battle was much cleverer storytelling than staging a cheapo battle would've been IMO.

If Arya and Tyrion aren't your favorite characters you're a horrible person.

Also Jon Snow.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

I felt they could have shown some kind of skirmish in the woods before Jamie's capture. That seemed to be done a little abruptly.

Number None, Monday, 13 June 2011 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I didn't really get how that came to be.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

i was wondering that too. if the Lannisters thought they were going to battle why was Jamie milling about somewhere away from the thousands of soldiers etc?!

magic punani (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 13 June 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

They were off to besiege Riverrun, Catelyn's dad's place

Number None, Monday, 13 June 2011 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

oh! i missed that somehow.

magic punani (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 13 June 2011 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think it was very clearly explained.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Monday, 13 June 2011 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

I can't even remember if it was explained tbh

Number None, Monday, 13 June 2011 20:02 (fifteen years ago)

May have been a throwaway line in the previous ep that that was what he was off to do.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Monday, 13 June 2011 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

i think that's the case?

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Monday, 13 June 2011 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

also man that executioner's sword was lol hueg

all the pretty HOOSes (gbx), Monday, 13 June 2011 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

they talk about it the previous ep when tyrion brings bronn & co. to his dad

☂ (max), Monday, 13 June 2011 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

i was waiting for those two when they were chilling with the whore to start playing truth or dare.
that scene was pretty dull until they got to the story about Tyrion being married.

magic punani (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 13 June 2011 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

explains alot.

magic punani (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 13 June 2011 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

also man that executioner's sword was lol hueg

was supposed to be Stark's own sword, "Ice", which they just left out of the show for whatever reason.

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Monday, 13 June 2011 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

They also left out one particular detail from Tyrion's story, but now I'm wondering if that was revealed at another point in the books.
