I keep getting recommended "A Song of Ice and Fire" even though I'm not exactly a fantasy fan. I'm hesitant… if only because reading a 4-part fantasy series will push the 'important' books start-date farther into the future.

Trust, remy. Martin executes his plots deftly and swiftly, and his characters are really well drawn. It does have some of the weaknesses of the fantasy genre -- the prose can get a bit, uh, purple -- but a lot of the supernatural stuff is kept in the background. It's all about the subterfuge and intrigue and suspense. Do it. You won't regret it.

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Saturday, 7 January 2006 23:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I really enjoy the books, but two warnings:
It's a 4 book series _so far_. Martin is adamant that he isn't going to drag it out the way Jordan seems to be doing with his books, but there are at least two and possibly three more books to go. Which means 4 or 6 years waiting for the series to finish (assuming Martin doesn't get run over by a bus)
It really is a fantasy series. There's intricate plotting and interesting characters and so on, but there are also dragons, ice zombies, and lots of waving of swords and kings and things. You might find that gets in the way of the other stuff.

Ray (Ray), Sunday, 8 January 2006 00:04 (eighteen years ago) link

I just finished the first book in the series today. I haven't read much fantasy, and I really enjoyed this book. My major disappointment was the constant feeling that I was travelling miles without getting anywhere, that the entire book was exposition. I know it's a series, but shouldn't we have gotten a bit further along after 800 pages? (Yes, it's swift reading, but it felt like it was swiftly moving on to the next book, rather than the meat of the story. I spent the entire book wishing we could get back to what happened in the very first chapter, beyond The Wall.)

Elmo: I actually spent most of the book wishing for MORE supernatural stuff, creatures and magic. If I'm going to read fantasy, it might as well be fantastic. Every time I got a whiff of a spell or a mythical creature, the curtain seemed to be pulled across the screen.

Still, I'm going to read the rest of the books. Despite the drawbacks mentioned above, the characters and potentialities are completely addictive, and I can just feel that something good is going to happen soon. I hope.

Butting into this thread to interject that while I haven't read much of his recent work, but "Sandkings" is probably one of my fave short stories ever.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 8 January 2006 01:16 (eighteen years ago) link

there's quite a buit more than exposition in the first book; some of the central characters are involved in complex & engaging plots and then wind up dead by books end. some of the other narratives can be a bit slow; the first time i read it i skipped all the Daenerys chapters in the first book, because I just didn't give a shit. On second reading, including those chapters, they were much more interesting.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Sunday, 8 January 2006 04:29 (eighteen years ago) link

But the Daenerys chapters are some of the best, there is a full character arc in the first book with her.

But, yes read, read, read, remy.

Navek Rednam (Navek Rednam), Sunday, 8 January 2006 08:58 (eighteen years ago) link

since daenerys was not directly involved with any of the other characters in the first book, it quickly became boring to me. on subsequent readings i read them, obv. and by the middle or end of the second book she becomes one of the most interesting characters.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:36 (eighteen years ago) link

It's just as well Martin is only halfway through writing the series -- if they were all available now I'd have to take a leave of absence from work until I got through all seven (if seven is the right number). I can hardly STAND IT that I'm sitting here checking ozalids* while book 1 burns a hole in my handbag, under the desk.

*Well actually at the moment I'm "checking" ILX but I'll get back to the ozalids in two shakes.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 12 January 2006 15:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Incidentally, I've stopped at the end of book 3 and I'm planning to hold off reading the others until they're all published. Its a natural break point, and I know that if I read book 4 now I'll just read 1 to 4 again when 5 comes out, and then 1-5 again when 6 comes out...

Ray (Ray), Thursday, 12 January 2006 15:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Smart. Though in my case probably implausible.

Just to check: 'end of book 3' is by name halfway through book 3, yes?

I like the different main characters for every chapter, and in particular the way that not all of them survive the end of their latest chapter.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:27 (eighteen years ago) link

'End of book 3' = 'end of the big hardback book 3' = 'the one that was just published is on my shelves but I will not open it for another 4 to 6 years'

btw my crazy theory is that jon snow is not actually ned's son but the son of lyanna stark and rhaegar targaryen that ned claimed for his own to protect him from the lannisters. eventually he and daenarys will hook up and rule all the known fucking world.

did you mean: fart blasters? (nickalicious), Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:30 (fourteen years ago) link

haha i'd forgotten that that was ever even a thing

thomp, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:39 (fourteen years ago) link

nick i think that's everyone's crazy theory who ever spent actual time speculating on these books

there's a pretty obvious "general direction of plot" by the end of book 4 though (dany ends up on the main continent with everyone else and joins the power struggle, some great evil force attacks from the north). you don't create something like the wall if its not gonna be the site of a big important battle scene.

god i'm not looking forward to rereading all 4 books when the 5th one's finally announced but i don't really remember 90% of the plot details

http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/110302/a-dance-with-dragons_240.jpg

A Dance With Dragons will be published on July 12. The manuscript is huge — the publisher estimates the hardcover edition will run more than 900 pages, putting it about the same length as the longest book in the series, A Storm of Swords. Schedule your summer vacation accordingly.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What took so long?
GEORGE R. R. MARTIN: I’m not sure I have a good answer. If I did, I would have taken less time. It’s enormous. It’s as long as A Storm of Swords. It’s very complicated. I have a lot of characters and points of view. And I’ve been doing a ton of rewriting, trying to get it where I wanted it to be. Some of these chapters I’ve rewritten more times than I can count before I’m satisfied with them.

Can you tease something from the book?
I don’t want to spoil any surprises. I can say all the characters people have been waiting for are there: Daenerys, Jon Snow, and Tyrion. There’s also new characters, and viewpoints from characters who did not have viewpoints before.

also it seems like the show might already be laying the groundwork for the Improved Jaime Lannister, which was took me a while to buy into in the books

(which I'm guessing is because Martin didn't have that plotted from the outset, so it was natural to make early Jaime more str8 villainous)
