Elmo: I actually spent most of the book wishing for MORE supernatural stuff, creatures and magic. If I'm going to read fantasy, it might as well be fantastic. Every time I got a whiff of a spell or a mythical creature, the curtain seemed to be pulled across the screen.

Still, I'm going to read the rest of the books. Despite the drawbacks mentioned above, the characters and potentialities are completely addictive, and I can just feel that something good is going to happen soon. I hope.

But, yes read, read, read, remy.

I like the different main characters for every chapter, and in particular the way that not all of them survive the end of their latest chapter.

i just started game of thrones. it's pretty addictive.

some of the prose is pretty horrible but still dude knows how to keep you hooked.

Despite literally billions of personal recommendations, I've never been able to get into the Game of Thrones copy I bought several years ago.

Last year I bought Dreamsongs (that whacking great short story omnibus) but haven't looked at it yet. Surprised it's not been mentioned here.

there's no way the hound is dead, right? it's like that 3 chapters in storm of swords where they led us to believe bran & rickon had been killed, but weren't, right?!!!

i'd like to kick him in the balls at least once for every time he pulls that trick tbh

i mean it's such fucking lazy writing. i basically can't avoid "so is this guy actually dead? *flicks ahead*", or if i'm feeling lazy *googles*.

since daenerys was not directly involved with any of the other characters in the first book, it quickly became boring to me. on subsequent readings i read them, obv. and by the middle or end of the second book she becomes one of the most interesting characters.

I like how this seems to imply that Daenerys actually is involved with other characters in the later books. (No, X doesn't count.)

btw my crazy theory is that jon snow is not actually ned's son but the son of lyanna stark and rhaegar targaryen that ned claimed for his own to protect him from the lannisters. eventually he and daenarys will hook up and rule all the known fucking world.

nick i think that's everyone's crazy theory who ever spent actual time speculating on these books

there's a pretty obvious "general direction of plot" by the end of book 4 though (dany ends up on the main continent with everyone else and joins the power struggle, some great evil force attacks from the north). you don't create something like the wall if its not gonna be the site of a big important battle scene.

god i'm not looking forward to rereading all 4 books when the 5th one's finally announced but i don't really remember 90% of the plot details

Started reading the first book this week...I may have to quit my job and devote my life to these books. Love, love LOVE. And I'm only 200 pages in!

I just finished book #10 of Robert Jordan's stupid series.

started to wonder if it was a fanfic thing or maybe wrote porn on the side and then it got kinda lolol in my head

I'm really bad about starting a new fantasy series, because I always think "Ugh great now I have to learn a bunch of weird names and stupid maps and ugh wtf is this language" but they're never as bad as I make them out to be and the funniest part is I havent yet met a fantasy series I didn't love. I just wait 5 years between reading a new series, lol

GEORGE R. R. MARTIN: I’m not sure I have a good answer. If I did, I would have taken less time. It’s enormous. It’s as long as A Storm of Swords. It’s very complicated. I have a lot of characters and points of view. And I’ve been doing a ton of rewriting, trying to get it where I wanted it to be. Some of these chapters I’ve rewritten more times than I can count before I’m satisfied with them.

Can you tease something from the book?
I don’t want to spoil any surprises. I can say all the characters people have been waiting for are there: Daenerys, Jon Snow, and Tyrion. There’s also new characters, and viewpoints from characters who did not have viewpoints before.

I remember actually spluttering at the book when that happened because I just KNEW someone was going to escape

also it seems like the show might already be laying the groundwork for the Improved Jaime Lannister, which was took me a while to buy into in the books

(which I'm guessing is because Martin didn't have that plotted from the outset, so it was natural to make early Jaime more str8 villainous)

I hope the show lasts that long. I genuinely can't see it going the distance though. How many seasons has HBO's longest running drama had i wonder?

plot thing I keep getting faked out on: arya reuniting with nymeria. he's feinted at it a couple times (mostly around Harenhall), but I'm beginning to wonder if it's all a red herring

w/r/t jaimes rehab: it was done well, but I sensed a...break between how he was rendered in the first book and how he was later developed, is all. like all the stuff about aerys' cruelty and w/e seemed like it was conceived after the first book

maybe instead of seeing things through his wolf, Rickon's wolf is seeing things through him

rickon and his wolf being assholes are kind of a counterpoint to the whole lannisters-becoming-good thing. maybe by the end of the book there will have been a full volte-face.

dany + jon fight back the others, reunite and secure the kingdom, then shaggydog fucks them up. fin.

maybe the book series ends with Daenerys reclaiming the throne and proclaiming a new age of peace, offering amnesty to all of the other noble families and marrying Jamie to bolster her coffers, only to be assassinated by a vengeful Arya

I am almost done w/ the first book and so far it seems like the book is divided so:

25% descriptions of food
25% descriptions of what people are wearing
25% of how women are useless
25% hodgepodge of cursing, sex, and what the spirit animal of each house is
