Because of an old "Mary Tyler Moore Show" episode, I am incapable of hearing the name Anna Maria Alberghetti without breaking into "Anna Maria Alberghetti in a taxi honey..."

My Mom is very good at finding an appropriate song with very little prompting. I stopped testing her after I fed her the word "asparagus" and she sang it to the tune of some old song called "The Pair of Us."

Fairly often I'll see something that will prompt the melody to "Girlfriend in a Coma" by the Smiths.
For example, I was downtown and there was a midget handing out pamphlets, and I got "Midget with a pamphlet, I know, I know, it's serious..." in my head.

Oddly, I don't even know how the verses to "Girlfriend in a Coma" go. I barely know the song. But it only seems to happen with this song.

Until recently my local corner shop was called Akbar's, and every time I went there I would sing "Akbar's! I wanna take you to Akbar's!" (to the tune of 'Gay Bar', obviously). I do have loads more of these, but usually don't remember them aside from when I do it.

More annoyingly, I've found that whenever someone says "yes" in a certain manner, I have to finish it with "the rhythm the rebel". It is driving me insane.

I have kind of the reverse problem - phrases of certain lengths always get stuck in my head to certain tunes. e.g., anything with 7-8 syllables starts reverberating to the tune of "Camptown Races." So the other day I was in the store and, after passing through the dairy aisle, started singing, "Lowfat cultured buttermilk, doo dah, doo dah . . ."

Similarly, six-syllable phrases get the classic conga line rhythm, a la The Simpsons' "You don't win friends with salad, You don't win friends with salad!"

Often when I get myself some green tea, I'm getting it with Greensleeves playing in my head. It's best whenever it's the Leonard Cohen version.

And if I have anything with old cheese (slice, salad, whatever), it tends to go on Simon & Garfunkel's Old Friends. "Old cheese. Old cheese. Great on a toast made of fine wheats." or similar.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

One day my boyfriend was over and his car was parked out front, and my cousin spotted a tiny ermine disappearing under his car. So she came in and reported, "John, there's a baby ermine underneath your car."

John: What?
Cousin: There's a baby ermine underneath your car.
John: WHAT?
Cousin (patiently): Underneath your car, there's a baby ermine.

Triggered by seeing the thread 'The Irish' on ilx:

"Help the Irish,
One time they were just like you
Drinking, smoking cigs and sniffing glue
Help the Irish
Don't just put them in a home
Can't have much fun when they're all on their own
Give a hand, if you can
Try and help them to unwind
Give them hope and give them comfort
'Cause they're running out of time"

I've been thinking about starting a thread similar to this which is just 'songs you sing to your cat', as every time I feed my boy shrimp & plaice wet food I sing him "I'm gonna feed you shrimp and plaice, gonna stuff it in your face" or similar (usually Prodigy version rather than Max Romeo tbh). Also lots of songs modified to be about his fluff.

A few years back I glimpsed a story on the news where the headline was “Bizarre Manspreading Assault” (presumably, per Google, this one), for some reason my brain immediately inserted that phrase into the scansion of Pete Townshend’s “Let My Love Open The Door”, and ever since I’ve found myself intermittently singing “bizarre manspreading assault” under my breath to the melody of the Townshend song entirely unprompted by any reminder of manspreading or “Let My Love Open The Door”’s existence.
(I guess I could’ve posted that in this thread at any point since 2017 but this is the first time since then that an instance of the described phenomenon has lined up closely enough with a thread revive for me to a) Remember the thread’s existence and b) Not go “aww, man, I know this has happened to be before, I just can’t think of how or with what song.”)

Wow, I somehow never connected the syllabic pattern of "Message in a Bottle" with my near-constant "Girlfriend in a Coma" trochee fixation.

Up to now I would almost certainly immediately sing "chicken in a bucket I know, I know, it's serious."

Now I am going to have to completely reassess "Message in a Bottle." In both directions! So like I can sing "Message in a bottle I know, I know, it's serious." But also everything like "kitten with a backpack" can be Policified, not just Smithsed.

This is mindblowing.

Van Halen's "Hot for Treacher" is an all time favorite, the well known classic about Roth's fetish for fish n chips

lol i'm just going to take it all the way to being a boastful metaphor concerning his rock-star success: "I've got it made, I've got it made, I've got it made - I'm Arthur Treacher." sort of an "i think i'm Big Meech, Larry Hoover" type thing, but fast-food fish-n-chip related.

surprised to learn there is exactly one Arthur Treacher's establishment left. also that "Arthur Treacher" was a successful British actor whose affiliation with the company was kept vague. i think i'd always figured he was like ColoneL Sanders, or possibly Captain D.

This one is not "inexplicable" but if I see the name France Joli I'm definitely singing it to the tune of her big hit "Come to Me," as in

I looked it up on YouTube and it is actually late 70s.

Lately when I feed my cats I find myself singing "foooood for caaaaats" to the tune of the Squeeze song "Cool for Cats."

This is in addition to the longstanding mental association with the old Far Side CAT FUD cartoon.

But the two don't really work together. I don't sing "fuuuuud for caaats." It's definitely "foooood for caaaaats."
