This years T In The Park festival may have the worst line up In its history, but what are the worst you have ever seen?

Most festival lineups in the past five years are interchangeable and indistinguishable from one another.

Tay-Tay Brooklynpants (Murgatroid), Friday, 20 February 2015 00:00 (four years ago) link

i feel like the promoters arent even trying here

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 20 February 2015 00:09 (four years ago) link

a) if I were sorry enough to be one of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, I'd be quietly devastated by this poster; b) I'm amazed at the low billing of Jessie Ware and Modest Mouse.

Simon H., Friday, 20 February 2015 00:09 (four years ago) link

Modest Mouse (the only band on the bill i like) have never had any hits in the UK

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 20 February 2015 00:10 (four years ago) link

Charli XCX is also really low.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 20 February 2015 00:12 (four years ago) link

Hard to justify Jessie Ware being any higher on that bill. There's a couple of things I'd see on the Friday and the Saturday, but the Sunday looks pretty dire.

T in the Park is always wey-heytheladslagerlagerlager though isn't it so mid-tempo hands-in-the-air rock singalongs always the order of the day.

everything, Friday, 20 February 2015 00:58 (four years ago) link

It wasnt like that when it started in Strathclyde Park, Hamilton.

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 20 February 2015 00:59 (four years ago) link

Sunday night line-up on the first T in the Park, Strathclyde Park July 1994:

Primal Scream
Del Amitri
Teenage Fanclub
Crowded House
The Saw Doctors
Gun
Grant Lee Buffalo
Baby Chaos

everything, Friday, 20 February 2015 01:06 (four years ago) link

Id rather see Primal Scream headline T In The Park over Primark Scream who headline this years.

the prodigy headlined in 95 (was amazing). the next year they played about 3rd on the bill so in daylightdespite having had #1s and being huge. I forget if it was Pulp or Radiohead headlined that day. (i saw Leftfield instead of Radiohead and Afghan Whigs instead of Pulp)

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 20 February 2015 03:04 (four years ago) link

Leftfield finished about 20 mins before the curfew time so i left early to get a taxi up the road (was too knackered to walk 15 mins up the hill ) and i walked outside to the surreal site of 200 riot police in full kit. Nobody else around. Apparently a few hours earlier some motherwell casuals had crossed the park to try burst their way in. (half the park is in Hamilton half is in Motherwell and TITP was on the Hamilton side)

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 20 February 2015 03:07 (four years ago) link

the Kink Festival in Orlando last year had a solid 1-2 punch conclusion of Gojira and Mastodon, but the rest of the lineup was...

Puddle of Mudd
Nonpoint
Devour the Day
Crobot
Islander

the Puddle of Mudd show was so embarrassingly bad. at one point Wes (the lead singer) went on a weird (probably substance-inspired) rambling monologue, and then he says "so I talked to my mother this morning" and my friend yells back "and she said 'make sure to lock up when you come in tonight!'".

also they did a limp dicked cover of War Pigs god I wanted to murder em.

but seriously tho I know Mastodon/Gojira have a wider appeal than other metal bands but who the fuck thought pairing them with nu-metal acts that nobody likes anymore was a good idea.

oh and hardly anybody showed up until the last two bands, apparently the festival was a huge bust and did poorly financially

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Friday, 20 February 2015 03:12 (four years ago) link

what a strange kind of festival to have gojira and puddle of mudd. I suppose mastodon have softened a bit so possibly could have fans of both but....

Never heard of the others.

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 20 February 2015 03:15 (four years ago) link

Nonpoint are having some kind of resurgence apparently. they opened for Megadeth and they had a fuckin' street team at the show (wtf is this 1999).

Guilfest wins this title every year but yeah, for a festival as big as T in the Park this is wretched.

Gutted that Wireless, which is around the corner from me, has leaned EDM this year. Kendrick and Nicki Minaj are playing, but Avicii and David Guetta are headlining. Clearly this is the summer of the EDM hacks.

Minaj moron (Re-Make/Re-Model), Friday, 20 February 2015 11:36 (four years ago) link

I keep forgetting that people like The Script and Twin Atlantic (a) exist and (b) are huge. Only on ILM would anyone be surprised that Jessie Ware and Charli XCX are low on the bill.

Minaj moron (Re-Make/Re-Model), Friday, 20 February 2015 11:38 (four years ago) link

what's with all the bands having preplanned album sets. I mean I know this is a thing now and I've seen many shows like this and have no objection to the format, but the choices for the album are a bit weird. ie why aren't Deftones doing "White Pony", I know people like "Around the Fur" but it's pretty far removed from who they are as a band now. I realize "And Out Come the Wolves" was Rancid's commercial breakthrough but it isn't as if it sounds that different from their other albums, a mixed set would be more fun from them.

Offspring performing Americana? fucking terrible album! at least when they did Smash in its entirety last year it was fun to relive all of the songs that got me excited as a 13 year old.

Mostly tho this poster looks like it was pulled from 2003.

re: Rise Above Fest, Butcher Babies are one of the worst bands I've ever fucking heard. There are plenty of phenomenal female-fronted metal/rock bands out there that are making great music. This one insults the audience by pretending these bands don't exist and presenting female-fronted metal as a novelty, solely playing off of the hotness of its two leads, while playing generic nu-metal that sounds fresh out of 2001.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 22 February 2015 18:16 (four years ago) link

joygoat, Sunday, 22 February 2015 18:37 (four years ago) link

xp yeah, Amnesia Rockfest doesn't look that bad to me. Slayer, SOAD, Melvins, Refused, Ministry, Deftones playing Around the Fur, Pixies, Descendents. i usually consider festivals to be worth as much as their best few bands. even if half of the bands suck, it can get tough seeing more than 4 or 5 bands in one day. it's not like anyone's forcing us to watch every band on the lineup.

billstevejim, Monday, 23 February 2015 03:18 (four years ago) link

I was tempted to post the lineup for Woodstock '99 earlier, which I still consider the worst concert of all time, but the lineup had 5 or 6 bands I would be ok with seeing.

still, must feel weird for the better bands in such a lineup to find themselves in such tired company

I think a lot of bands are basically in and out of festivals in half a day and I doubt the rest of the lineup even registers half the time. If you're doing 20 festivals in a row in as many countries, who cares who you shared a bill with in Portugal or Norway, somewhere deep in the middle of the run?

Matt DC, Monday, 23 February 2015 09:46 (four years ago) link

is Rancid doing a number of "Wolves" 20th ann'y shows this year? i can't seem to tell from their website.

i'd go see that if they played nearby. that album's so great, top to bottom.

alpine static, Monday, 23 February 2015 10:05 (four years ago) link

also, how huge is Twin Atlantic? what size venues do they play in Europe? i saw them several years ago in a small-town-America strip mall space that held about 75 people on what must've been their first tour in this country. their van had all kinds of logos and shit on it. weird scene.

to their credit, they didn't phone in the show. they could've.

alpine static, Monday, 23 February 2015 10:08 (four years ago) link

think Twin Atlantic are like university-sized venue level in the UK, as opposed to arena-sized, but I've never knowingly heard a song of theirs or met anyone who likes them so not best placed to gauge

Twin Atlantic seem absolutely huge amongst students and folk in their late teens/early 20s around here, but they are a local band so that makes sense. I have never knowingly heard anything by them.

Every year I feel bad that I've never been to a festival until I hear workmates talking about T and then I feel a sense of relief. This year's line-up makes me feel old, and at peace with that.

That Shiiine one is really weird for reasons I can't put my finger on. Like, yes, they're all old reformed bands, but they don't quite belong together? Probably very narcissism of small differences but they seem like their demographics should be at least a little different?

emil.y, Monday, 23 February 2015 13:52 (four years ago) link

Those distinctions vanish when you consider a gap of 25 years (!) and the economic realities of putting on a festival aimed at middle-aged people.

Matt DC, Monday, 23 February 2015 14:09 (four years ago) link

I don't know, I think actually the distinction to me has increased - like, I can't see the lumpy guitar people wanting to see the dance acts any more, whereas "back in the day" of course those people would want to go to both. Like, is it a baggy/dance revival festival or is it a SwaggerofOasis festival? Those people to me seem like they'd no longer be the same? I am probably wrong.

Given who the headliners are, it's the former, and it's not like 808 State and The Orb don't fit into that in some way, it's hardly like they've booked Jeff Mills or Basic Channel. If anything the incoherence sets in further down the bill, the gap between the Telescopes and arse end of Britpop shit like Space feels much bigger, but it's not like the demographics of either fanbase are large enough to justify their own festival at this stage.

Matt DC, Monday, 23 February 2015 15:14 (four years ago) link

Judging by the state of the people trying to get into Bez's Acid House at Glastonbury the contingent of ageing baggy ravers off the leash for the weekend is still sizeable.

Great to see Bez on the same bill as Space Monkeys, one of whom he had a pre-arranged bare knuckle fight with a few years ago. Look at him bleeding like a pig
http://www.donnelly24.com/images/bez/bez-3.jpg

HAPPY Mondays star BEZ hits rock bottom as he is battered in a brutal bare-knuckle brawl.
The dancer - real name MARK BERRY - took part in the sickening underground scrap this week after a longrunning feud over his ex-fiancee Monica Ward.

He suffered angry-looking cuts and bruises in the organised bout - as did his furious love rival, SPACE MONKEYS bassist DOM MORRISON.

The fight was only stopped when a paid referee stepped in after 15 punishing minutes.
The shocking snaps, taken in a scrapyard office in central Manchester, mark the latest grim development in a bleak year for potless ex-Celebrity Big Brother winner Bez, 46.

In August city magistrates issued a two-year restraining order preventing him from contacting ex Monica, 43.

He was then fined £140 for breaking the order by sending her text messages last month.

Morrison is now thought to be in a relationship with Monica - with whom Bez has a two-year-old son, Leo.

A source said: "The fight's been the talk of Manchester for weeks. Two local brothers Anthony and Christopher Donnelly were involved in putting Bez and Dom in the same room to sort out their problems.

"It was really bitter and they only wanted to sort it out one way - with an old-fashioned straightener.

"They went at it like animals with a lot of blood and sweat. Bez looked cut up but gave as good as he got. It was a draw in the end and they both managed to walk away."

The source added: "Bez is having a horrible time right now. He's struggling to keep on top of things." Bez made his name in the '80s and '90s with his manic dancing and maracas with The Happy Mondays.

Deploying the crew and a brace of shuttles the relic is hauled back to the orbiting Imaginarium for further studies.

The Imaginarium's engineers hook it up to the starship's central computer but as they start to run tests there is a huge power surge, the lights go out and a golden, winged figure steps out of the gate. Wind and lightning swirl around the cargo bay and spheres of pulsating light fly out and enter the bodies of the Mob and their crew.

Guttural voices spring forth from the suddenly golden-robed Mob: 'I am Ra' 'I am Anubis' … It seems the captains have been possessed and it's time for an Egyptian adventure in Outer Rave Space.

Featuring the finest in London's underground DJ talent, incredible dancers, the finest costumes, the heaviest dance floor on the scene, full dungeon, couples area, interactive performances, fully custom decor and the friendliest, most accepting crowd in this greatest of earth's cities Imaginarium is ready to once again rock your body as we celebrate three years of Imaginarium.

Dress code: Egyptian mythology, sci-fi soldiers, gods and goddesses, creatures of gold, ancient warriors, slaves, fetish, goth, cyber, rave, sci fi or just plain out there.

No effort, no entry: no streetwear, just be fabulous.

every town must have a small but hardcore contingent of cybergoths and judging by the average indoor market, the clothing must be relatively cheap. the metalworks is a pretty big venue afaik, right?

Not really. It's the Slimelight club. I've seen bands like Chrome & Extreme Noise Terror there. Capacity is apparently 750 though.

a friend of mine lives near that and was so excited last weekend about it.
(to be fair, he will be raising money for his charity there .. so he has good reason)
i tried to feign enthusiasm, but when he said m&s i could not help but blurt out re my disgust.
that said, the very best, are a lot of fun live.

mark e, Friday, 19 June 2015 08:31 (four years ago) link

yeah i was gonna say it's not the worst lineup in the world. i'm excited about our local festival and the headline acts there are the brand new heavies and the neville staples band, so... but i guess it's good you now get these smaller local festivals that double as community projects.

but i guess it's good you now get these smaller local festivals that double as community projects.

mark e, Friday, 19 June 2015 09:32 (four years ago) link

In those circumstance I think you almost don't need good bands, you just need them to be not actively terrible and for the beer to keep flowing. Ben Howard and the Mumfords would be a step too far for me, if it were on my doorstep I'd leave for the weekend.

Matt DC, Friday, 19 June 2015 10:20 (four years ago) link

good point. few people go to our local fest because of the acts - they go because it's got a reputation for being a lot of fun, although i can imagine a known headliner helps justify the entrance fee.

That were right good. (Very low expectations, mind you.) This whole baggy thing might catch on.

Livestock has to be the thread leader, surely? A striking lack of transition between the headliners and supports. It jumps straight from unfondly-remembered ex-Top 10 acts to seemingly unknown bands, who the organizers shuffled around at random on the poster. Poor old I Am The Id got bumped down by 7 lines. Not wanting to be unfair on any of those bands, except maybe Mumford & the Bear and late addition to the bottom of the bill The Nick Parker Band. Hope we see a legal action by the real Nick Parker.

Courtesy of Should Festivals be Banned?, here's a former nominee. Based on amusing artist names, I think I would go to this.

No one is invested enough in the V festival to care, and those that do go every year are likely to be more or less okay with the lineup. It's been pretty much a pop festival for years now. You'd have to be a particularly antidleluvian kind of dullard to get angry about it especially when Reading and numerous other bland Home Counties festivals already exist.

That's pretty much a flat-pack assembly festival dance lineup, you'll be able to see most of that lot at virtually any festival this summer. I'm pretty sure I read the phrase 'Jackmaster b2b Joy Orbison' more than I do 'Hello' in 2016.

was thinking the other day about how dull all of the mid-sized British festivals (and a lot of the smaller ones as well) look this year, everything boring 6Music-friendly schmindy with some half-decent dance music thrown in if you're lucky. Is it more homogeneous than in the past? Is it something to do with lack of Glastonbury this year meaning things will sell even if very dull?

- Super-commercial one-dayers headlined by Bastille
- Hippie ska drug-fests headlined by Gentleman's Dub Club
- Posho adult-oriented camp-outs set in the beautifully rainy Cotswolds headlined by Joanna Newsom

I don't even remotely understand who that last festival is meant to be aimed at.

Moderat being billed higher than Blink 182 is pretty o_0 or do they play like arenas in that area of the world?

Roskilde goes on late and tends to put a DJ on after the headliner on the main stage, and I assume Blink are headlining a smaller stage.

Explaining the Pop Dungeon concept, Church said: “Down the dark, dark stairs, upon the bloody gallows of soft rock, through the oubliette of cheese, into the torture chamber of disco, you are welcomed to the Late Night Pop Dungeon.

“The Grand High Executionatrix, dungeon mistress Charlotte Church ,and her ten-piece ultra-metronomic post-punk-disco-R’n’R’n’B backing band will give her MK Ultra treatment to the greatest tunes that time forgot, and some that will forever haunt our collective memory. So what is the best UK festival this year? Does one exist? Compared to a lot of European and US festivals, I find it hard to find one that caters to my music taste, isn't a totally basic commercial nightmare, isn't a total hippie dread-fest, is still fun, goes on late enough into the night, isn't massively oversubscribed and isn't way overpriced. That said, I really miss being in a field over the summer and hearing music. Is Europe the way to go?

Choco Blavatsky (seandalai), Thursday, 30 March 2017 11:14 (two years ago) link

I knew that lineup was too good to be true. It seems every time I see a UK festival with a really good lineup, it gets canceled. Happened with Jabberwocky, Temples Festival in Bristol last year, Bloc in London in 2012, umpteen ATP fests. And yet there are dozens of rubbishy things that go ahead without a hitch every year.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Thursday, 30 March 2017 11:26 (two years ago) link

The problem is that "really good lineup" =! "commercially viable", in fact you could argue that the better the lineup the less viable it is. I can't say I'm surprised that Safe as Milk is cancelled either.

heaven parker (anagram), Thursday, 30 March 2017 11:58 (two years ago) link

think things like this are just not going to be possible in the UK in the foreseeable future without sponsorship or (presumably increasingly scarce) arts funding. uncertain if SAM was funding itself in any way aside from ticket sales but I doubt its partnerships were providing much revenue, or that Newcastle (where the organisers are from and which cut its arts budget by 100% a few years ago before walking that back in some way) is likely to prop up a festival taking place in another country

And it's in April which is a funny time to be standing outside watching music.

Still, such a shame. I love festivals but I don't like the idea of spending a lot of money on something that isn't up to scratch. I look at US and Euro lineups and feel so jealous. Maybe Europe is the way to go after all. Get a holiday out of it too.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Thursday, 30 March 2017 12:33 (two years ago) link

xp I went to a Bugged Out Weekender there in 2000, my memory was that it was busy enough but their website differs

November 17th 2000 was the date of the Bugged Out Weekender at Pontins Holiday Camp, Prestatyn. The cast was beyond stellar: Underworld and Reprazent live, The Chemical Brothers, Dave Clarke, Felix Da Housecat, Green Velvet, Richie Hawtin, Carl Craig, DJ Hype, James Lavelle, Jon Carter, Gilles Peterson, Roger Sanchez, Slam, Justin Robertson, X Press 2, Lottie, Craig Richards, Yousef, Harvey, Mark Rae, Jacques lu Cont, Mr Scruff, Bent, Rob da Bank…the list goes on and on. Even Doves played an acoustic set in the pub run by the Heavenly Social. Thing is only 1500 people (half the capacity) turned up meaning that at best you were able to dance to the Chems without being crushed or see the whites of Karl Hyde’s eyes as he performed but at worst there were sometimes only a handful of people dancing in some of the rooms. Looking at the line-up it still makes us think, ‘What the fuck happened there then?’ But I guess Prestatyn in North Wales was probably not the best choice, it was inflicted with biblical weather in the weeks leading up to it (in fact it was almost cancelled due to flooding). The train system was also fucked that month with regular trips from London to the area taking nine hours. Still, there were still a lot of good memories from it – the best being the spirit of the people who did make the trip – with the NME summing it up perfectly by calling it “a spiritual success”. We take solace in that when we recall that we lost our shirts (pants and socks) that weekend…

No line-up yet, and not sure just how much music there will be, but worth keeping an eye on for this thread: Conservatives to hold one-day festival after response to Jeremy Corbyn’s Glastonbury appearance

Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman is credited with the idea, the aim of which is said to be increasing the party’s grassroots support.

[...]

Now, the Financial Times reports he has raised £25,000 for the event, which will be held in September. Freeman said he had also had “some wonderful offers of help of sponsorship and venues” and the idea for a right wing festival “seems to have struck a chord”.

He likened the one-day festival to a “cross between Hay-on-Wye and the Latitude festival” and described it as a reaction to the “increasingly corporate, expensive and exclusive” Tory party conference.

Freeman’s event will be invitation-only, with only between 150 to 200 people to attend. He said it would be like a “first rave, you’ll remember who you brought.”

“Aim isn’t Glastonbury (!) More like grassroots #PoliticsFest: Big Tent. Philosophy. Culture,” he added on Twitter.

Emphasis mine etc. etc.

It would not surprise me that Laura Marling is a tory. Has she said as much?

PaulTMA, Sunday, 6 August 2017 21:14 (two years ago) link

It would be even less surprising than Kate Bush, cos Marling is the daughter of a baronet rather than a doctor. Or does that work the other way round? Fuck knows. My only evidence is that Marcello once referred to her as a "Tory twat".

I played at Shiiine a few months ago. Actually had an OK time, despite none of the three or so bands I actually liked playing that day.

As we were unloading I heard a band covering MGMT's 'Kids' in the distance, which I assumed was some covers band playing in one of the pub venues, but when they followed it up with Starsailor's 'Four To The Floor' I realised it was the sound of Starsailor themselves at work, adding something a little 'contemporary' to their set

I also got to watch Embrace alternate their hits with new material which contains millennial whoops and latter-day Take That-esque choruses in a no way desperate attempt to get on Radio 2. During this I noticed Lammo standing nearby.

Like I said, it was fun

NNE Proudly Presents - BE HERE NOW - Paisley's first All Day indie festival - Saturday 29th September 2018 - Paisley Town Hall.

Hosted by Fools Gold Indie Clubnite, get set for a full day & night of iconic indie anthems with some of the country's finest tributes with a truly festival feel;

Confirmed bands so far;

Ocean Colour Scheme - Recreating the classic sounds of Ocean Colour Scene is no mean feet. With an attention to detail often missed by tributes, these guys deliver a true "close your eyes and it could be the real thing" experience. For fans of OCS, you won't want to miss what is a powerful and anthemic homage to the one of the UK's song-writing giants.

Loaded - the UK's hottest Primal Scream tribute deliver all the band's hits with a big band sound. Backed by brass, percussion and backing vocalists, the band have been ensuring audiences get their "Rocks" off to the classic anthems of Bobby Gillespie's legendary indie rockers

The Muldoons - The Muldoons originally formed in Paisley in 1989 and developed their much loved guitar based songs on the indie scene through the 90s. The band reformed in 2017 and, after a sell out comeback gig at Paisleys Bungalow, went on to finish 2017 supporting Inspiral Carpets Tom Hingley. 2018 kicked off with a spectacular sold out headline gig at Glasgows legendary King Tuts Wah Wah Hut, followed by a great set at O2 ABC Glasgow

God Like Genius - The UK's leading tribute to the music of iconic songwriter Noel Gallagher, God Like Genius deliver a journey from early Oasis classics through to High Flying Birds anthems.
The six piece band brings the big sound required to do justice to the songs that defined a generation.

Appy Mundays - Reliving the heady Madchester vibes of the infamous Hacienda, Appy Mundays bring you the cult classics and best-selling hits of Manchester's number one baggy band the Happy Mondays.

The Complete Stone Roses - The Complete Stone Roses are one of the UK’s most well-known, most seen and most successful tribute bands. Selling out venues across the UK and Ireland regularly, they have helped to carry on the music of one of the UK’s most influential bands - The Stone Roses. As tributes go, these guys are top of the tree....

So join us for what will be one of Paisley's biggest music events of the year.

I kinda like that 10 year challenge festival idea... 2020 you get to choose a lineup of LCD Soundsystem, Vampire Weekend, Black Keys, Sleigh Bells, Caribou, Yeasayer and Deerhunter.

2021: Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, St Vincent, Girls, Destroyer, Florence and the Machine, Yuck, M83

And so on

You know, I haven't gone in years, tbh. It's become such a gross scene of bros and bad smells. Plus it's a red flag when there are something like 170 different acts but usually only 5 or so I'd want to see it, while at the same time the scale and layout more or less makes it impossible to easily discover new things.

So no, likely no. My kids have asked about it, but only in the context of fashion. They've never mentioned the music.

I don't really think of any of these headliners (the familiar acts listed on first four lines) as having fans in common?

The Cure and Pixies are two enormously popular indie bands of the late 80s and early 90s; I'd be more surprised at people who liked the work of one and had active antipathy toward work of the other of the same period.

Robert Smith famously hired the Deftones' producer for one of their two 21st century albums, and even signed to his own label for it (to be fair to you, the Cure's bassist hated the experience, the person, and the record), and booked the band at Meltdown last year.

And the Cure took Mogwai as one of the mainstage headliners on their touring Curiosa festival - both bands play long, dirgey-but-developing-and-dynamic guitar-driven music, so surely plenty of people are capable of enjoying both (hello!).

The Pixies and Cure feel to me like they occupy (obviously) adjacent but largely separate universes (like, I’ve never personally known anyone who was a big fan of both) — but that Dodger Stadium bill does seem to make sense in context (Love and Rockets feels like a link between the two).

the last Berry La Croix in the work fridge (morrisp), Thursday, 25 July 2019 05:35 (one month ago) link

I'd be more surprised at people who liked the work of one and had active antipathy toward work of the other of the same period.

I live only 15min away from the venue and would probably go to this, but I've consistently been anti-Pixies over the years. I was at that Dodger Stadium show and skipped most of their set.

A: the mad decent festival seems like it was a trolling/fake thing since the beginning but I wont lie, it seems stupid fun and would have probably been a success considering everyone involved on the music-side.

I’ll say this, if one music label/collective could be branded into an amusement park / festival of sorts, mad decent would be it. Diplo and friends are in the very comfortable spot of influencing both the mainstream and the counter-cultural aspect of it, whatever that means.

The point is that if asked for investment money on a mad decent festival, I would have blindly said yes. Diplo alone has a connection with fucking everyone from Justin Bieber to Alan Vega.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 25 July 2019 06:25 (one month ago) link

B: I know a lot of people who are fans of Cure, Pixies and Deftones. I don’t see how those headliners are controversial in the same slot.

If we change those three headliners to something similar but not quite, likes let’s see:

Pet Shop Boys
Jack Johnson
Perfect Circle

Then yeah, I would have said: “this is a fucking terrible idea”, even though I wouldn’t mind seeing them in a different setting. However Cure, Deftones and Pixies together seem like it would attract a more common crowd than what you may think.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 25 July 2019 06:33 (one month ago) link

I can picture a white jeep circa 1999 with stickers on the back for Cure, Pixies, Deftones. And of course NIN. Likely RHCP or Jane's Addiction too.

I can definitely imagine my friends who were into the pixies in the early 90s rolling their eyes at The Cure, but yeah by the end of the decade those two constituencies seem to have merged.

“Hakuna Matata,” a nihilist philosophy (One Eye Open), Thursday, 25 July 2019 13:06 (one month ago) link

that mad decent fest was definitely not a “troll.” it was heavily
promoted at the big festival here (boston calling) and the billie eilish show in june (she was one of the headliners and i’m betting she fueled a lot of ticket sales). the stadium where it was held was likely banking on it being huge as its concert schedule this year was much more sparse than 2018’s, which had taylor, beyoncé/jay-z, and two kenny chesney shows as its high points (this year there were only five shows total counting mad decent).

that said the heat this past weekend would have likely put the kibosh on it like it did with ozyfest in nyc. miguel can’t catch a break!
