His first album, from 1973, was made with Ornette Coleman's former bandmates (Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell); later he was a member of Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society; and in the 80s he made a series of excellent albums with Olu Dara, Fred Hopkins and Andrew Cyrille. Richard Christiansen (RIP, 90 years old) was the Chicago Tribune's lead theater critic from the 1970s through the early 2000s. Discovered a shit-ton of playwrights (Mamet et al), actors (Franz, Farina, Adian Quinn, dozens more), directors, sometimes the only critic championing a show.

And really good at what he did: taking the duty of describing a show as seriously as his take.

And her helicopter Mom, played by Olivia de Haviland, has a lucid look, down some road they've been before. Turns out her daughter had a childhood accident, resulting in subtle brain damage, a certain tinge of arrested development, surfacing now and then. So then she meets an Italian boy, George Hamilton, who's actually kind of good in his role: of a kid who means to be charming, and is, in a disarming, anxious and funny way, sort of semi-self-aware? way, as he senses he may be getting into more than he'd bargained for, re daughter x mother, then later his father (Rosano Brazzi_works some American expectations of Italian charmer-businessman possibilities, and Yvette's buttoned-down Manhattan executive Daddy (Barry Sullivan) shows up, and Olivia adjusts to everything now in play, as best she can.
Based on a novella by Elizabeth Spencer, who recently got her own Library of America collection, and I suspect there's more than made it into the movie, which still manages some implications, and is an usual balance of period interest in expensive cheese *and* mental health, though could play now on a double bill with Suddenly Last Summer (which is better, but could easily imagine Yvette in a Tennessee Williams movie).

Somehow he managed to complain about the proportions of MOMI's room/screen without it coming off as a faux pas. I saw 2001 for the first time a short time later, in a 70mm print on an IMAX screen, and his big final effects sequence made the case for grand projection all by itself.

Sandy Nelson was part of the first wave of 1950s Hollywood session musicians--in addition to many of the hits he played on (uncredited), Sandy Nelson also had two big hits under his own name: "Teen Beat" in 1959 and "Let There Be Drums" in 1961. ...

His two most recent albums were great, made with an incredible band: Bill Frisell on guitar, Jason Moran on piano, Thomas Morgan on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. He had two records before that with just Frisell and Blade that I need to check out.

He is a welcome presence in the Ginger Baker documentary.

In fact this album he made with Ginger Baker called Coward of the County seems like it might be good.

Oh no, what another sad loss -- Bobbie Nelson, Willie's sister and longtime (as in decades and decades) pianist/keyboardist.

Bobbie Nelson was one of the first women musicians that I ever saw on stage. She was the first example I had of a woman playing music while also having a family. I’m honored to have known her. My deepest sympathies to the Nelson family.

I was looking at his filmography after hearing the news. It’s shocking how few of these I’ve seen or remember. For whatever reason the ones I’ve seen are ones where he had small roles.

I haven't seen that many of his movies, I don't think, but he's fantastic in Altered States and Body Heat and A History of Violence. He was a great character actor that Hollywood tried to turn into a lead because he was good-looking. When he could get that out of the way (like in the Amazon show Goliath, where he was heavily scarred), he could be really fucking good.

A good actor and a huge piece of shit who abused Marlee Matlin

I've always had a tough time figuring out that guy's acting. Sometimes he could be funny, or empathetic, or menacing, other times he was weirdly somnambulant, like he'd been hypnotized.

oh man, didn't know about the history of abuse. Not just Matlin but another ex. Terrible. Altered States was a favorite of mine in high school.

A pretty good sleeper William Hurt film is Eyewitness (1981), co-starring Sigourney Weaver

He was so briefly huge: the big white prestige actor of the High Reagan Era. Best playing recessive dudes; he didn't mind playing dim or even stupid characters without condescending to them, a difficult trick.

Lovd him in Broadcast News, making a character like that be likeable is quite a magic trick
