"There could be a million Americans dead by then under his watch" ok, yeah, probably not; maybe tamper down the hyperbole a bit Mary.

https://i.imgur.com/ba8bRwL.png

we are at around 1000 deaths a day again, on average, and it's only going to go up, unless half the country suddenly realizes that they're fucking morons. we are about 70 days away from inauguration day. that's 700,000 additional deaths, plus the ~230K deaths that have already occurred.

so yeah, there could be a million Americans dead by then.

i had a very serious discussion about comedy with my neighbor and best friend down the street, when i was 6 or 7. back in the days when it made a lot of sense that your best friend just happened to live next to you.

he was always telling "jokes", and would ask me to tell "jokes". jokes as in "a 5-year-old walks into a bar..." etc etc. i told him (this part is serious, i remember it) that the kind of jokes i liked better were like -- i didn't understand "situational" or "physical" -- someone slipping on a banana peel

and in a way i still feel like that

God, the one that will always get me was when we learned how to make a salad in home ec in 7th grade, and our teacher— a 6'2" woman with immense hair who wore too much make-up named Mrs. Hazeltine— kept on going on and on about "this is how you toss a salad, toss the salad gently and with a lot of care" and it just became this thing where the boys would ask every week if we were going to be tossing salads in class and she would always ask incredulously, "why would we toss a salad today, boys?" It still makes me giggle.

All kicking off at Leamington. Mike McGrath sent off for Kettering after a physical altercation with the referee , took it out on the changing room then decided that wasn't enough is tried to get back on the pitch to have another go at the ref before the stewards got control and gave him to the police.

― Well *I* know who he is (aldo), Tuesday, 19 January 2021 20:36

Just seen the video - the ref calls him over for something, he's clearly got a cob on and goes to square up but the ref has his arm out pointing and McGrath meets it with his chest, then slaps it out of the way so he can get closer.

Speaking of Labradford, I can’t listen to them because on multiple albums they seem to have embedded extremely high pitches in their music, on the edge of my hearing range, but right in the sweet spot of my dog’s hearing - she goes crazy (not in a good way(

I have a friend who shares the name of famous actor Richard H@rris, and who one day in Prague spotted an old aquaintance from Bucharest up the street, disappearing into a crowd. He started calling after him, "Mike! Mike!" and then took up chase, weaving in and out of others, calling "Mike!"

Finally catching up to him, winded, he took him by the shoulder, "Mike!" The man turned around. "Mike! It's me, Richard H@arris! From Bucharest!" The man was startled, and nonplussed, because he was Dustin Hoffman.

with some friends recently and staved off our starving kids by tossing them an unopened package of crackers which someone referred to as a 'sleeve of ritz' and it got compared to 'slivovitz' which led to the concept of some sort of delicacy where plum brandy is injected into sealed tubes of ritz crackers and left to macerate until a boozy gelatinous paste forms.

We pictured an overly earnest 2010 charcuterie provisions restaurant with a tattooed mustachioed person lovingly preparing grey tubes of slivovitz sleeves-of-ritz to hang and age in their brooklyn/portland storefront

my junior year HS history? Every week we had to turn in a report on a current event and my friends started doing them on things like BJ and the Bear article from the "TV Stars 1982" book in the library or the trading cards of En Vogue and Linear from the side of a Pop Tarts box. A guy named Wilhelm found an article in the weekly world news about a car called the wilhelm that ran on urine and turned it in as if it had been from popular mechanics. The teacher came in the next week with a stack of Popular Mechanics from the past year to prove Wilhelm was lying but didn't do anything because he was too lazy.

Yes but being blown out of the cargo bay into space without a spacesuit on requires being in space, so

in space you cannot have a last cigarette.

calzino, Tuesday, 8 June 2021 15:17 (two years ago) link

it's true, but in space you can use those little thrusters on each side of the capsule to do lateral movements. would be fun to exhaust bezos out of the cargo port and then just baaaaaarely thrust away from him so it shoots him off in the other direction (toward the sun)

imago, Tuesday, 8 June 2021 15:46 (two years ago) link

the sad thing is, i'm pretty sure bezos really DOES have an iron man suit prototype somewhere deep down in his cargo shorts, and he would probably annihilate the sun and claim this solar system as a new base for his galaxy supply chain

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 8 June 2021 15:49 (two years ago) link

you could also attach those little thrusters to the guillotine blade. the ops folks at amazon always find a way to execute.

kitties gotta hydrate because they'd normally get most of their water from their prey and consequently haven't got the urge to drink as much as they need. wet food + many dishes of fresh water throughout yr space can help, and maybe a fountain

if food & water are kept next to each other the water will get gnarly little chunks of food in it

a plastic food dish can cause chin acne

it's best to have a food dish with low sides, like a plate or saucer, to avoid whisker fatigue

research any houseplants to make sure they aren't toxic because they gonna get chewed

get her used to having her paws and mouth fiddled with (lots of praise, affection, & treats) so it's easier later on when you trim her claws/give her meds

same with car trips and her carrier, if she only associates them with the vet they'll be a source of dread. take her out for little drives and make them fun for her

careful of her cuticles when trimming her claws, and you won't need to trim the back claws unless they're catching on things

get her used to being brushed

have plenty of (easy to clean) rugs or carpet so she can dash around without slipping on smooth floors, and i'd recommend patterns instead of solid colors since they tend to be better at hiding the stains of accidents past

teach her to come when you call: choose a cue (her name in a particular pitch, a short series of whistled notes, a set of finger snaps or whatever -- something recognizable to a critter with no use for spoken language) and make her associate that cue with everything good in the world, like treats and catnip (when she's old enough for catnip, and if she's sensitive to it). keep reinforcing the link between her cue and the things she loves in perpetuity

take care of her dental health, veterinary dentistry is expensive as balls

if she brings you dead things, praise her! cats cannot conceive of hunting as a thing they should not do. if she gets scolded for hunting and gets her prize taken away, she'll think there must be a famine on and try to catch more

give her lots of private little bolt holes where she can hide and feel safe (but which you can access if needed)

vertical spaces are important, too, because she is very short and on the floor everything looms around her like skyscrapers and it can be intimidating sometimes. tall cat trees, wall shelves, furniture arranged in graduating heights are all good

breakaway collar so she doesn't accidentally choke herself (cats have soft throats compared to dogs)

always speak kindly to her

be careful where you step!

and finally,

if you have the space/resources/inclination, maybe consider getting another kitten for her to play with so she's not 100% focused on you and won't be lonesome when you're away

or you know whatever. as long as you love her she's gonna have a grand life!!!!!

for sure, some of the best engineers on the planet are probably working for Tesla and SpaceX, Elon himself on the other hand seems to have no good car ideas at all. maybe I'm wrong!!

here's a fun story, my little brother owns a Tesla and something got messed up with the security system, idk if he hit the wrong button or something but the car just started freaking out, like honking and flashing lights and all that. apparently when it thinks its getting "broken into" the stereo system also starts playing Trans-Siberian Orchestra at max volume, which you can't turn off. the problem was my brother's wife and his 1-year old son were trapped in the car, and now there's this deafening music playing while my brother literally has to Google how to turn the shit off, and you just know fucking Elon Musk brought that up at some meeting, "ha ha, here is funny idea, also very smart because it disorient the thief, ha ha" and everyone around him is afraid to tell him no so they just start working 90 hour weeks instead of 80 to make it happen, and now my nephew might have hearing damage

imo people are going to need to adjust their expectations about when and how they put energy into their cars. like, it mainly happens at home, and if you’re going far enough that you need to do it on the road then you’ll need to combine that with a bit of a break. a meal. watch something on your ipad. yes that feels less convenient than spending 5 minutes pumping poison into a tank but one of the tradeoffs is that you never have to pay $1000 to replace a $50 HVAC sensor or deal with a main seal or whatever.

Five and two year old at the table, two year old asks "hey google how does a sponge work"

"According to the website mayoclinic.org the contraceptive sponge is a type of birth control (contraceptive) that prevents sperm from entering the uterus. It is soft and disk-shaped and made of polyurethane foam. The contraceptive sponge contains spermicide, which kills sperm. Before having sex, you insert the sponge deep inside the vagina so that it covers the cervix. Your vaginal muscles hold it in place. The contraceptive sponge has a strap on one side for easier removal. The sponge can prevent pregnancy but doesn't protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)."

Because people aren't sitting in a theater next to a half-empty bag of popcorn and a 92-ounce bucket of Sprite?

Mostly we're home. We can pause the movie and go fold the laundry or heat up a burrito or masturbate while thinking about the Amazon delivery person or read the New Yorker or play Candy Crush for a while, then come back to it. Does it matter whether the movie is two hours or three? Not really.

If it were a series we'd probably watch six to ten episodes in chunks of varying length, in between work calls and Amazon deliveries and games of retro Tetris.

that's basically Scott Pilgrim iirc

FTR I have never actually seen an Amazon delivery person so I don't know what they look like - just trying to evoke a generally fuzzy state of mind and an assortment of weird habits born of isolation and boredom, and exaggerating for effect.

I do feel like I'm sleepwalking a bit, and slipping from paths of righteousness and healthy community-oriented living into dissolution and decay. Many people I know are expressing similar sentiments, though they would definitely not choose the same specifics.

idk I mean I usually saw the Amazon trucks but rarely saw the people emerge from them until recently, because we have a hub where they drop packages in our apartment complex.

as opposed to UPS drivers, who I have been seeing run like they have hemorrhoids to drop off packages since childhood.

Okay. I mean, I look out on the porch and there's a package there. I didn't see it arrive, so I don't know who brought it.

Of course I see people delivering things out in the world. I just don't know who brought my specific things to my specific doorstep; I don't see any humblebrag or elitism in that.

I was mostly joking but ...

1. you have a porch
2. you live somewhere where packages can be left and you don't have to worry about security/theft

jaymc, Friday, 7 January 2022 17:10 (two years ago) link

could be some regional variation here if "Amazon delivery person" specifically means Prime delivery not just UPS/FedEx/some other contractor. When I was in Chicago in November I was shocked at how many Prime vans there were, I would often see them in twos or even threes (xp with jaymc!)--it felt mildly dystopian since I also ended up going to Whole Foods a couple of times. They are much rarer in Montreal; I only really noticed them on the street in the immediate run-up to christmas.

One of the ways I feel very Canadian is that I am very fond of my regular Canada Post worker (among other reasons: she delivers govt weed to my door), though um not in a creepy way I swear

No, we don't use it much, but when we do it tends to be Purolator that handles delivery (often arriving at insane even undesirable times like Sunday 9am). Not sure if that company exists outside of QC?

Maybe worth mentioning that Amazon is simply less useful in Canada, or at least it was when I moved here in 2014 and dropped Prime. I try not to use it because I hate them so bad, but sometimes you are basically forced to, like right now I need replacement filters for the de-lead-ing water filter the city gave me (lmao) and they are only available on Amazon afaict

you're hosting a Christmas dinner. a guest thoughtfully brings some corn for popping, but forgets about it before taking a seat. the loose kernels spill out of his pants pocket onto the floor. and here, in front of your Christmas dinner guests, you still find a Shark to be an acceptable dyson knockoff brand? You've got the red turtleneck with embroidered mistletoe on the fold, but the vacuum is lacking sir.

Ssäm Sauce | Martha Stewart (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 7 January 2022 22:54 (two years ago) link

the corn for popping on your floor isn't the point. a fucking black & decker could suck up that soft sawdust shit. this is a question of form not function. the dinner guests. the knockoff vacuum. you are fucked as soon as you get up to head for the closet door, and you know it. "leave it," you say. "just leave it. it's like a Christmas Texas Roadhouse, but where the peanut shells are loose kernels, innit?" but the guests aren't buying it. you'd better produce a Dyson before the "Rattlesnake Bites" tray is passed or the night's ruined.

"I'll be in my room, making no noise and pretending I'm not there," said Harry dully.
"How many monsters d'you think this place can hold?" Ron asked dully.
Dully, Harry turned it over
"Madam Pomfrey fixed him best she could," said Hagrid dully
“Balderdash,” said Harry dully.
“Great,” said Harry dully
Well, it might be easier to get past a dragon if he were a ferret, Harry thought dully
“Quidditch,” he said dully
“Fairy lights” he said dully
“I asked her to go with me just now,” Harry said dully
“Dunno,” Harry said dully
“No,” said Sirius dully
“I’ve told you,” Harry repeated dully
They bowed clumsily, muttering dully
And all the while, his scar burned dully
There you go, Sirius, Harry though dully
“Fine” said Harry dully
Some of them had broken windows, glimmering dully
Harry wondered dully
“Well I tried,” she said dully
“Well,” said Angelina dully
“Yeah, I suppose you’d better,” said Harry dully.
They glimmered dully
An ornate letter S, inlaid with many small green stones, glinted dully
