Disapproval of the job Donald Trump is doing as president is continuing to rise, with nearly 6 in 10 voters giving the president negative marks amid a new coronavirus surge throughout parts of the country, according to a new poll.

The latest POLITICO/Morning Consult survey, out Wednesday, found that Trump’s job approval sank to 39 percent, with 59 percent of voters disapproving. At the beginning of June, 41 percent of voters approved of the president’s job performance, while 55 percent disapproved.

I'm not quite ready to relax my crack (if only because, whatever else happens, I'm convinced that Barr will try to be a more intentional version of Comey at the 11th hour of this particular election cycle) but the last week or so has been the first time in four years that I've allowed myself to believe that Trump might actually lose and lose very very hard. What, then, is the Lincoln Project up to? Going viral is, more than ever, its own reward, something surely not lost on a group of political consultants who have been sidelined as Trump and his allies have taken over a GOP that used to listen to them. The success of their ads on social media is a claim of relevancy and could easily lead to more work—which is to say, more money.

Gone are the days of forecasting a landslide victory. The president’s team is looking not for where Trump can win more, but how he can lose less.

Donald Trump’s campaign once spoke of expanding his electoral map into blue-leaning territory like Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico and New Hampshire.

Now, winning at least a handful of those states has become a matter of survival.

States that top campaign officials had said they had the luxury of pursuing are no longer considered add-ons to the president’s electoral vote tally but backstops to keep him afloat, according to multiple people close to or involved with his reelection operation.

The most telling sign of Trump’s defensive posture is his recent mammoth TV ad buys. The campaign is spending big to retain states he won in 2016 and to shore up support in places a Republican should already dominate in, like Georgia or Florida’s Panhandle.

Publicly, the Trump campaign asserts their candidate is still competitive in each of the 30 states he carried in 2016. They say presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden faces an enthusiasm deficit among his party’s likeliest voters and that public polling — much of which has shown the president trailing far behind Biden nationally, and more narrowly in battleground states — does not jibe with their own internal numbers.

“President Trump plans on winning every state that he did in 2016, plus picking up others. We’re in a great position to be on offense and would rather be in our shoes than in Joe Biden’s,” said senior adviser Jason Miller.

But privately, campaign aides, senior administration officials and GOP donors have begun to acknowledge what they call a more plausible scenario: a pair of losses in the Rust Belt, most likely Michigan and Wisconsin. That would mean the president has to win some proven Trump-averse states to crack the 270-vote threshold needed to clinch a second term.

“We don’t need 306. We just need 270. it's really quite a story, though. some small-time trolly facebook page put up a bogus "flag burning" "antifa" event in gettysburg for july 4, with a stock photo of some guy from germany as the event leader, and rightwing facebook trolls overreacted and hundreds of racist nationalists showed up to counter-protest it. finding nothing, they instead surrounded a guy wearing a black lives matters shirt. there's no physical violence in the video (plenty of verbal abuse), but it's terrifying. and of course, a cop shows up and protects the old racist white men and asks the (very calm, lone) protester to "de-escalate" and leave the park

most of the story focuses on the online aspect - who posted the bogus event, and who are the very real racist blowhards who organized the counterprotest. fascinating, very dystopian stuff.

I’ve seen more rebel flags in rural Pennsylvania than I ever have in rural Maryland. Truly baffling.

Historically speaking, Maryland's confederate sympathizers were concentrated in Baltimore; rural Western Md. had independent farmers who resented the south's free labor. It was a CSA miscalculation that Marylanders would welcome them as liberators.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Donald Trump's approval rating is holding steady at a lower level after a sharp drop in late May and early June, with 38% of Americans currently approving of the job he is doing.

In early May, Trump's approval tied his personal best at 49% -- before it sank amid nationwide protests over racial injustice after the death of George Floyd. Now his approval rating stands just three percentage points above his personal low of 35%, registered on four separate occasions in 2017.
