Tough call for me between Foster and Laurie. (ATPM is my favourite movie here, and Alexander's great, but I think she has less screen time than them...a lot less, maybe?) All the others from Carrie mentioned by Eric are great, but who's Edie McClurg?

I'll retract what I said about Straight. For being such a small performance it's so damn uneven, in large part because of Chayevsky's high-minded gobbledygook, to quote a poster on StinkyLulu's site. She's best when she laughs and says "You're in for some awful grief, Max."

This is really interesting to me but I have no theories. Never really met anyone who has this opinion.

If the thrust of that article was that Oprah should be considered for Best Actress instead of Supporting, the author's out of their mind.

Seems to me that article is actually praising Oprah's performance as transcending that stereotype. Clickbait title, et al.

Went through Wikipedia's list of American films for '76, didn't really spot any other obvious possibilities from what I've seen myself. Maybe Tatum O'Neal in The Bad News Bears. I think one of the five best American films that year--most memorable, anyway--was on television: Sybil. So possibly Joanne Woodward, too, although it's pretty much Sally Fields' show.

Actually, I really liked Kathleen Lloyd in The Missouri Breaks.

That's so freaky, I just watched an old episode of Ironside and was racking my brain thinking, who is that actress that I've seen in about 15 different things... it was her.

Just revisited both Alexander and Straight's performances while making a sandwich.

The marvel: you can make and eat the sandwich and both performances will have ended six minutes earlier.

Guessing Foster logs about 10 minutes? Three scenes--De Niro in the room, De Niro in the diner, and dancing with Keitel--and a bit more. Laurie's role must be the largest by a wide margin.

(The third scene for Straight she's literally sitting in the living room watching TV with Holden and their daughter as Howard Beale gives his "I'm as mad as hell" speech. I think you might see her in profile or with her back to the camera.

I've seen All The President's Men a few times and I still had to Wiki the film to see who Jane Alexander was in it.

I never would have guessed Foster and Laurie were so close.

On the flip side of Straight/Alexander, I imagine Hailee Steinfeld is near the top of the list for most running time for a supporting actress nominee.

Olivia de Havilland in Gone with the Wind too, just on the sheer accumulation during that 222-minute running time.
