OMG, I used to get those two mixed up as well! The thing that helps me out is knowing that Reynolds is a nobody now and Selleck is the guy who played "Magnum P.I.", as well as helped Kevin Kline's character get out of the closet in In & Out (so Selleck obv wins). OH, nearly forgot when he was Monica's older boyfriend in "Friends", too! So the '90s obv made Selleck stand out a bit more, thankfully....

And Patrick Swayze is the dude in "Donnie Darko". Kurt Russell I remember as being the guy who started out as a child actor.

I used to be confused by Dorothy Hamill and Mary Lou Retton when I was a little kid, too. Just remembered. And the names of the two families on "Charles In Charge" -- the Powells and the, gee, can't remember the other one. I used to, though, and eventually figured out the Powells were from the latter part of the series and that other family were the first ones, the one without the grandfather.

Dan, I confuse Chris Rock and Chris Tucker because they're both called Chris, they're both comedians, they both broke through in the movies around the same, and I'm not too familiar with their acts to know what differentiates them. There's no hidden racism there, I confuse white people with similar names and backgrounds too, like the aforementioned Bills Pullman and Paxton.

lampoon (n.)
1645, from Fr. lampon, of unknown origin, said by Fr. etymologists to be from lampons "let us drink," popular refrain for scurrilous 17c. songs, from lamper "to drink, guzzle," a nasalized form of laper "to lap." The verb is first attested 1657.

1. a sharp, often virulent satire directed against an individual or institution; a work of literature, art, or the like, ridiculing severely the character or behavior of a person, society, etc.
–verb (used with object) 2. to mock or ridicule in a lampoon: to lampoon important leaders in the government.

pillory (n.)
1274 (attested in Anglo-L. from c.1189), from O.Fr. pellori (1168), from M.L. pilloria, of uncertain origin, perhaps a dim of L. pila "pillar, stone barrier." The verb is first attested 1600.

1. a wooden framework erected on a post, with holes for securing the head and hands, formerly used to expose an offender to public derision.
–verb (used with object) 2. to set in the pillory.
3. to expose to public derision, ridicule, or abuse: The candidate mercilessly pilloried his opponent.

Ben Franklin and Benedict Arnold. It's a breakfast thing.

I was eating Eggs Benedict one day and said to my husband, "Benedict Arnold flew the kite, right?" To this day Eggs Benedict is now Eggs Ben Franklin.

Philadelphia & Pennsylvania - I always forget which is the city and which is the state.

Yes and Bread - no idea why, but these two bands are completely interchangeable in my mind.

Curiously my friend confuses Eggs Benedict with Eggs Florentine. Which really should be easy to tall apart as one is delicious and the other has spinach.

gigolo aunts were boston power pop, that bloom single was a huge local hit when i was in high school. i think they had chloe sevigny on the cover of their major label album?

was california tuffy that "oh palm trees, sway in the breeze, i'll be alone forever" song? that had a pretty good hook if i remember. dammit, now i'm going to have to search for that too.

I will not yield!

He was in something with Henry Ford, I think. Wait, no, that guy's not named Henry Ford... Henry... He was in the Fugitive! Harrison Ford!

Oh for crying out loud, I just clicked through a whole lotta Ford titles on IMDB and still didn't find m... OH WAIT It's Steven Seagal!

I mean, I realize that neither of these are trending topics anymore, but on the jimi hendrix vs nirvana thread:

I thought Geir's random comment had something to do with the Postal Service being a Seattle band or something but Postal service: Tamborello - California, Giddard - Washington. So I guess it was just one of his trademark inflammatory comments.
