Just want a girl as cool as Kim Deal, obv.

+ indie darling vs. indie darling + chart topper favors Kim D.

Also, she has a longer wikipedia entry, so there's that.

Points should also be awarded to Kim Coletta.

kim deal, definitely. better bass player, better singer, better songwriter. better collaborating with other people. end of story. what would you rather listen to: the amps or harry crews? exactly, neither. but you would pick the amps if their was a gun pointed at your head.

No.

Kim Deal I think is better. People just like Kim Gordon because she's married to Thurston Moore or because they're anti-comformists.

An easier one than the main question..."Do You Love Me Now?" kills that tune.

As for the Kims, I love them both too. I like Sonic Youth but never loved them like Pixies. I go with Deal.

KIM FOWELY!!!! okay, okay, Kim Deal. MUCH better songwriter and for influencing "smells like teen spirit" without a single SOUL noticing - exact same dynamics as "gigantic"! Sonic Youth had the noise thing going good, (nice to see some people who appreciate "confusion is sex")but the Pixies never made a bad album throughout their career, Sonic Youth have had quite a few misses in theirs, come on have you even HEARD that "Dirty" crap!?

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 13 January 2006 07:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Kim Deal made the Pixies brilliant once ("Gigantic") and just barely noticeable at all other times. Imagine the Pixies without Deal and you're imagining the most faceless- and anonymous-sounding band in the world.

Kim Gordon did great work with SY; her GAP ads (billboards in Boston) don't negate that work by any means, but it does call certain things into question. Is sweatshop labor all cool and acceptable and "new weird america" and ringer-shirted now?

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Friday, 13 January 2006 17:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Imagine the Pixies without Deal and you're imagining the most faceless- and anonymous-sounding band in the world.

I'm no Pixies fanatic, but I can't get on board with this at all...
I guess it comes down to the fact that I'd rather listen to the Pixies, The Amps and possibly the Breeders than Sonic Youth most of the time.

will(iam), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:07 (eighteen years ago) link

so Deal, I suppose.

will(iam), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Wow, is this a tough one.

I’m going to go with Kim Deal for the Amps album alone (the first two Breeders records were great, I’ve no familiarity with the Pixies whatsoever). Kim Gordon’s awesome too – esp. w/r/t Free Kitten, doens’t anyone else like them but me? -- but there’s no song/record of hers I come back to as much as I do to Pacer.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:31 (eighteen years ago) link

'm no Pixies fanatic, but I can't get on board with this at all...

I should note that I think the first Breeders album is totally brilliant. I never saw the fuss about the Pixies until I heard Pod and realized who the brains (and heart and soul) behind the Pixies was.

I don't think Frank Black is totally dull...just not real deserving of the heaps of praise he gets.

But ultimately, I'll take Sister over alla that combined.

ok so im gonna have to say kim deal. it seems to me like kim gordon does alot more singing and i really love her voice even though she sounds a little more manly than kim deal, but i love kim deals voice too (the intro to tony's theme comes to mind). as to playing i really like kim deals style and tone, but umm to all those people who were saying how sonic youth doesnt need a bass and you can even hear her, well thats just wrong. just because she isnt playing all the time doesnt mean shes bad. i have to say tho, as a bassist/lead singer kim deal has probably influenced me alot more than kim gordan. i have to say my opinion is probably biased because i havent checked out any of the other stuff either of the kims have done outside of the pixies or sonic youth but hey whatever. and kim deal is hotter.

joe maher, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:02 (eighteen years ago) link

ok you all know im better than kim gordon. i really like the song my friend goo tho. props to her for that.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 05:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Kim Deal for about fifty reasons, the most compelling and immediate of which is "One Divine Hammer." Jesus, what a song - surely goes in any grunge top ten. Kim Gordon doesn't come close ever.

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 07:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Kim D. is opposed to innernet. and digital recording, as well.

a long time ago, supposedly, some local photographer in Dayton, OH went to Deal's house and took some candid (read-post shower) pics from outside looking in. then went on line and attempted to sell said pics. i think that sealed the deal for Deal...

dunno how legit this story is.

It's sad there is a question. Kim Deal is argueably one of the most cool people of all time. If you were to take the word "Cool!" and somehow find a way to carve it on every grain of sand on every beach across the planent it would not equal one nano-millionth of her sheer and inherrant coolness.

Sonic Youth are probably my second favourite band of all time - after Pixies. Kim Deal is simply the coolest person of all time with the greatest voice of all time - I have argued constantly with my mates who are all typical Scottish musical racists - ie, they listen to Oasis and all this crap - and say that both bands are crap. This simply is not true: Deal is fantastic, Cannonball and Gigantic are two of my favourite songs and i prefer the Sonic Youth songs sung by Thurston Moore - Teen Age Riot, Sugar Kane, Dirty Boots etc. (I know Kim sings at the start of Teen Age Riot, but the song doesn't really kick in till Thurston comes in) I'm not really a fan of Gordon's voice - it's not that I don't like it, I mean I don't mind it - it's just Kim Deal's voice is fantastic... so Kim Deal, hands down, anyday.

Scott McIlravey, Thursday, 23 February 2006 20:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Both Kims are hugely significant to the face of modern music. SY and the Pixies influenced music more than nearly any other bands in the last 20 years except for Nirvana. The Pixies may not credit SY as an influence, but SY helped set the stage for bands like the Pixies. The Pixies may have still been a great band, but people wouldn't have known to look for them unless SY helped create the viable underground scene in the early 80's. Deal's voice may be more listenable, but Gordon's voice was pushing the envelope. Gordon and SY may have had more "misses" than Deal, but they've also put out a massive volume of music and have decided to take more chances along the way. The Pixies and the Breeders were always "safe" music - they weren't revolutionary like SY was, they were just more palatable and thus became the face of the underground/indie scene of the 80's. Gordon wins hands down. Plus, she'd kick Deal's ass in a fight.

Chromebowler, Saturday, 1 April 2006 20:48 (eighteen years ago) link

You make a good point, but it was Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo's guitar playing that made Sonic Youth's music revolutionary, not Kim Gordon's bass playing, or even her voice. I guess this isn't Sonc Youth vs. the Pixies so I guess that has a lot to do with it. But obviously Sonic Youth have gone down the melodic path, where the Pixies excelled at. I just think that it's obvious that Kim Deal is super talented, and that she could hold her own, I don't know about Kim Gordon though.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Saturday, 1 April 2006 21:04 (eighteen years ago) link

But Kim Deal made bubblegum music that everyone over 26 has grown out of (people will deny it, but they know it's true). Sonic You don't feel so adolescent.

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 1 April 2006 21:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I wouldn't call "Pod" bubblegum music at all.

Plus I can't think of many old timers who are into "Inhuman".

Sonic, You don't feel so adolescent.

latebloomer: a power and finesse vocalist (latebloomer), Saturday, 1 April 2006 22:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Maybe you're right - it isn't SY vs. the Pixies. Kim Gordon may also not be the well rounded musician that Kim Deal is. However, Gordon is willing to take musical risks that she knows may not be well liked - I don't see Deal doing that. I'm just saying, for me it doesn't make any sense to reward someone for playing it safe. Also, I think Kim Gordon would be a hell of a lot more rewarding to hang out with - you'd probably learn something. I've heard rumors that Deal, and I can't claim this is true so don't quote me on this, agreed to rejoin the Pixies to tour because she needed money badly to support her habit as did Francis.

Chromebowler, Saturday, 1 April 2006 23:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I never thought of Kim Deal's music as "playing it safe", but just as her own style. I bet a lot of bands come across as playing it safe compared to Sonic Youth though.
About Deal's and Francis's habit, the only thing I heard about the reunion was that they agreed that it would be "dry", that they wouldn't drink at all on the tour, so hearing this rumor is really surprising.

But Kim Deal made bubblegum music that everyone over 26 has grown out of (people will deny it, but they know it's true). Sonic You don't feel so adolescent.

-- paulhw (pppso...), April 1st, 2006.

--------------------------

-- Chromebowler (chromebowle...), April 2nd, 2006

ok this might be a long one. here goes.

the pixies music is not soft. it is just varied, with contrasts of yummy poppy goodness and noise. sure they werent as noisy as sonic youth, but whats your point? sure, sonic youth pushed the boundaries - to the point of repetitiveness. i love sonic youth but once you've made your point, just move on. the good thing about both bands is that they have elements of both styles and i dont think the pixies should be punished for having a couple more tunes in there.

as for adolescent music? sonic youth seems noticeably more teenage-angst than any pixies track i know. i'm not saying that the pixies are hugely mature, but they're not bubblegum. and though i know a few people over 26 who like them, i dont actually know any that like sonic youth. but obviously the people i know are only a tiny percentage of the population.
also, just out of interest, if they deny it and only they know its true, how do you know?

also ONE LAST THING:

Gordon, obv. I also can barely even remember what KD's voice sounds like.

-- Sundar (sundar_subramanian200...), January 2nd, 2006.

well if you cant remember how do you expect to compare? and dont say it just means shes forgettable. it just means youre forgetful. if she was forgettable we wouldnt be having this discussion, would we?

I'd go for Kim Deal though. Her voice is so beautiful and full of energy! But back to reality... she's to old.

But after Kim i wouldn't take Kim Gordon, but Bilinda Butcher from My Bloody Valentine. She's much younger and her voice is cute like in "lose my breath"

http://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/kim-gordons-clothing-sale/

i'm kind of amazed that Kim would so this but maybe it's just wrong of me to assume that she's wealthy. maybe she isn't but surely.... i mean there's no mention in the article of good causes or charity, not that there necessarily would be. it's just in the article where she mentions that she "didn’t want to go the eBay route". it just seems bizarre to me that Kim hawking her old clothes on ebay would even be a possibility. if she's not hard up i thought she would be giving this stuff away.

"We just priced each item in terms of what it was, more so than who it belongs to. I don’t think Kim was really interested in that.”

considering that you're pricing a second hand Jane Mayle dress for $425 i kind of beg to differ on this.

jed_, Sunday, 2 September 2012 13:22 (eleven years ago) link

she wore a lot of really flashy clothes onstage that i can't imagine she had much use for in her daily life, so more than anything else i take this as a further indication that SY's touring days may really be behind them.

think both thurston and kim are doing more interesting things now.

scott seward, Sunday, 2 September 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link

i am gonna see thurston's new band next week, or the week after, i forget.
i don't care much about it but since half that band is friends-of-friends i am willing to dig it.
i loved sonic youth when i was a teen. favorite band.
but i thought when i saw thurston touring behind his last solo record, before i heard the record, i was disappointed at how predictable the songs were -- that same clanging guitar noise in the third quarter of the tune. just... strange. so if he's been re-invigorated or challenged by this chelsea light moving thing then all the better.

i have heard nothing kim's doing with nace -- saw thurston & nace play last year and i was pretty boring.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 3 September 2012 05:45 (eleven years ago) link

know what you mean about the clang/drone thing being predictable but the solo thurston show i saw at lincoln center last winter was cool

i'm kind of amazed that Kim would so this but maybe it's just wrong of me to assume that she's wealthy. maybe she isn't but surely

she has a kid going to college, she's divorcing and SY were pretty inactive for awhile before the split. damn straight she needs money

four years pass...

these days I've changed my mind to Deal. Those first couple Breeders records + the Amps' "Pacer" are unique and underrated

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 June 2017 21:47 (six years ago) link

wonder what Deal's "Girl In A Band"-style memoir would be like

tylerw, Monday, 19 June 2017 22:02 (six years ago) link

I read some recent interview with her where she was being v forthright about aging (not married, no kids, caring for sick/invalid parents) and it really made me feel for her. Plus the sobriety angle. Her and Gordon had very different lives.

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 June 2017 22:12 (six years ago) link

this thread is kinda gross though, reading over it

I think there is something highly unusual, maybe even unique, about Deal's role in rock culture and indie rock culture. To go from what was essentially a second-fiddle role in a band that wasn't quite that huge to something where she was the leader/songwriter/singer of a female-dominated group that surpassed her old band in popularity and cultural ubiquity by virtue of her strange combo of bubblegum pop instincts and love of noise/distortion but then there's this grim underside of drug abuse and isolation and it all goes to shit and now no one talks about her, she's like a forgotten one-hit wonder (whereas Gordon still has that dialed-in NY art/fashion/media scene to sustain her and also had the family experience)

Deal

Unchanging Window (Ross), Monday, 19 June 2017 23:13 (six years ago) link

Deal is an icon for me. I admire Gordon a lot, but from a distance. Deal's writing, voice, persona all connect very directly. There are days when she's my all-time favourite songwriter - golden pop sensibility shot through with chaos and darkness. Find me another song as tight-and-loose as London Song or Sinister Foxx, or as offhand menacing as Doe. She's truly unique in an unassuming way.

Thurston Moore pretty much turning into the Sonic Youth-loving Jason Bateman character from Juno is one of the more bizarre things to have happened in recent years. Thurston still gets to hang out and make lists of his favorite albums on the cool websites too.

Pacer's one of my fav five or so albums, probably. Always love listening to it. Only picked it up by chance, Back when vinyl wasn't selling much and The Amps had about 10% of the name recognition of The Breeders (iirc Deal once said not just calling it the third Breeders album was her biggest career regret).

sleeve, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:16 (six years ago) link

Deal's probably otm that releasing the album under a different name from the Breeders was a colossal mistake. You'd think that a follow-up to a huge album would've gotten more attention but it really kind of disappeared.

Fwiw I spoke to a woman in NYC in 2002 who claimed she interviewed Kim D backstage at a gig and she was openly smoking heroin but I think she went to rehab for alcoholism rather than heroin and that was before the Pixies reformed so suggestion she did the reformation to support her habit doesn't ring true. She admits to taking lots of drugs in the late 90s. Anyway both these women are icons to me and this thread kinda sucks but here I am adding to it so fuck me I guess.
