The oldest I ever felt was when I found out there's a band called Alvvays. Spelling shit in a Transylvanian accent is a thing now? No fucking way.

Anyway I later found out it was just to make the name google-able but the damage was done.

ROFL @ "Ha ha the moose"

I don’t care how many AOTYs it gets, I’m not listening to a band called Jockstrap

There was a trailer all over BBC 6Music a few weeks ago for a show called "Lose Yourself With Jockstrap", delivered in that terribly earnest 6Music trailer voice. Did wonders for my mental wellbeing.

I would like that name a little better if I knew that's where it came from.

One of my favorite jokes:

A moose hunter and his friend are hunting in the woods. They come across a third man, who puts up his hands and says, "Don’t shoot, I’m not a moose!" But the moose hunter raises his gun and shoots him. The hunter's friend turns to the moose hunter and asks, "why did you shoot him? He told you he wasn’t a moose!" And the moose hunter goes, "Oh, I thought he said he *was* a moose.”

I stayed away from Prefab Sprout for a very long as I thought they were a prog rock band based off there name

Blake Mills

ok, wait, I am going to ask for some further clarification about this one. a) it is literally his real name, and b) not even a bad one at that. struggling to see why this would chase someone off.

xp As a flip side to this, I remember explaining to a friend that Lou Barlow of Sebadoh used the name "Sentridoh" for his solo stuff, and my friend frowned and was like, "What's the deal with this guy??" Like he found the concept genuinely outrageous and distasteful for some reason...

They're a good band, the name is a bit strange though because it seems to imply a different style of music to what they actually play.

mirostones, Saturday, 5 August 2023 12:23 (eight months ago) link

Personally, I think that's the only cool thing about them. I'm a sucker for that particular bit of misdirection. See also: Swans, Cherubs. Trying to think of an example of the opposite approach - gnarly name, chill band. I guess The Grateful Dead sort of count

in a record store the other day I overheard two gen zers talking and one said to the other "if someone likes more than one Beach House album that's a total red flag" and the other one agreed. I don't know what is going on anymore.

Became irrationally angry when confronted with the awful hybrid name Michael Cera Palin earlier this week, which I see has already been mentioned upthread so I will add . . .

Ritt Momney.

Judi Dench's Human Hand (methanietanner), Saturday, 23 September 2023 15:03 (seven months ago) link

Except Squirrel Nut Zippers had a lexical pedigree, and they were also, um, pretty good?

Like, I'd rather hear them than Cherry Poppin' Daddies or big Bad Voodoo Daddy or whatever. And while we're at it, Cherry Poppin' Daddies is WAY more gross and indefensible than Squirrel Nut Zippers.

Weirdly, around the same time as those bands there was a quite charming hyperlocal act called Ululating Mummies. (I am speaking of 1990s Richmond, Virginia here).

Ululating Mummies would get (understandably) annoyed if you called them Undulating Mummies. Ululating and Undulating are totally different words. I will die on that hill.

https://newenglandhistoricalsociety.com/squirrel-nut-zippers-return-to-massachusetts/

The candy dates back nearly a century, to a time when New England was the center of the candy-making business. Squirrel Nut once belonged to the 140 candy companies in Boston and Cambridge. They churned out such now-extinct brands as Hoarhound Ovals, Jujube Monoplanes, Whangbees and Climax Mint Patties.

Hoarhound Ovals shoulda been the freakfolk aughts band the cast off band members formed

frogbs, Sunday, 24 September 2023 03:17 (seven months ago) link

Hoarhound? I thought it was horehound.

I spent every vacation of my childhood being dragged through ye olde townes (colonial or colonial-adjacent minor cities with a few cobblestone streets and maybe an oldish house).

The gift shop would always have the following things: a tricorn hat, a replica Declaration of Independence, a quill pen, a wax seal kit, and some terrible olde-timey candy (invariably including horehound).

Sanford, Sunday, 24 September 2023 15:00 (seven months ago) link

Squirrel Nut Zippers were both better (in a musical sense) and less toxically masculine (in personnel and presentation) than the other neo-swing bands tho

Hereward the Woke (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 24 September 2023 15:29 (seven months ago) link

They were much more 20s/30s hot jazz than 40s swing, and in terms of their approach I feel like they had more in common with weirdos like Tav Falco and Tom Waits than with the Cherry Poppin' Daddies or Brian Setzer. I mean, this is not the kind of thing you do in hopes of having a hit record or spawning a dance craze.

no gap tree for old men (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 3 October 2023 17:30 (six months ago) link

it helps me that a lot of phc and emo bands have off-putting terrible names because i'm likely to find the music similarly terrible

you can see me from westbury white horse, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 17:32 (six months ago) link

I’ve always thought the main reason Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich have never had a real reappraisal is their name. They are one of the great singles bands of 60s and the albums are all good, but they’ve actually become a bit obscure comparative to their success - younger 60s heads aren’t really aware of their music and I think it’s the name.

houdini said, Thursday, 5 October 2023 09:34 (six months ago) link

Possibly, I mean they didn't take themselves very seriously and recorded a lot of gimmicky/ near novelty material so it's not surprising they aren't up there with, I don't know, the Kinks. Also they didn't write most of their big hits.

The First Time Ever I Saw Gervais (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 October 2023 09:39 (six months ago) link

the landfill that time forgot: crap uk bands of 00s/10s

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 5 October 2023 09:43 (six months ago) link

I guess I’ve never had any problem with novelty stuff, so I’m the outlier here. What others see as novelty features on DDDBM&T records, I see as brilliant pop touches. I still think they’re closer to the big UK bands than they are usually considered. Manfred Mann, for example, didn’t write their A-sides and did plenty of singles that were arguably a bit novel, but they still command this ambient respect DDDBM&T never get and some of their stuff is still well-known and well-liked.
