san francisco band THE BELLOWS was fronted by singer/songwriter/guitarist james oakes (not to be confused with the historian). the band gigged around the bay area quite a lot in the late 90s and early 2000s, opening for the chameleons, the church, and similar bands. james self-released two bellows albums: outside (1998) and color the wheel (2002). the track "outside" features a cameo from mark burgess. riyl: the sundays, the chameleons, early church, early cure, aztec camera / roddy frame, chorus pedals, and pensive moods.

Haha! It's true--I mixed a piece of my own music. But I genuinely felt like it fit!

Live recording from last Friday. A couple of the transitions were more ragged than they should have been, but there weren't any car crashes, and the crowd reaction in the second hour was off the scale, so the mix already holds special memories of an exceptional night. Starts with deeper cuts, ends with crowd pleasers.

moodles soundcloud served me up one of your mixes after something i was listening to and i only made it 20 mins before i had to check what i was listening to. i was surprised to see it had such a dark title, it was actually super groovy for the first hour or so. i'm not really familiar with the tracks but the part that caught my ear was around 20 mins in, sort of a minimal track with a male spoken vocal (like a snippet of monologue) and then it turned into something a bit more like chicago tech house

i keep autoplay off because it generally serves me up crap (like drill from the emirates with arabic rap) and this time i was like "oh wow it served me up something actually good" and iirc i stopped vacuuming to check

it occurred to me also maybe you meant the “demon circuit” metaphorically, like the little voice in my head tempting me to purge my set lists of anything that bad boy bill, dj irene or jr vasquez wouldn’t have played (if they would play at +8 then that counts too)

“driving / chugging” refers to last 90 mins btw, not the groovy techy first hour

The names precede the actual mixes, they help me frame up a concept in my head of the direction I want to go when I'm picking out tracks, and later on they help me remember what tracks were in which mixes. Whether I actually achieve that concept is a different questions altogether.

that's wild because i do that too a lot. it doesn't always turn out good but sometimes i'll try to make a mix based on the arc of a story (book, comic, movie). i've even tried making my own version of other people's mixes. like i always loved derrick carter's cosmic disco and juan atkins' wax trax mix and ken ishii's x-mix, so i've tried to copy the pace and flow of those mixes while using a 2020s set of tracks. kind of a fun exercise, although i'm not sure anyone else would hear the resemblance because i'm not sure any two hear a mixtape the same way, at least not at that granular a level

i was talking with one of my tighter "professional contacts" (ie a real dj who sometimes lets me tag along for internship experience) and he approaches it the exact opposite way. which is like, find a bag of records that's easy to mix together well and see what happens when you arrange it as smoothly as possible. i don't really like that kind of mixing but i can't say it sounds bad and as soon as ben ufo got a big audience even he veered in that direction so what do i know

There are definitely specific mixes and DJs that I model my approach on, although I'm positive it sounds nothing like them. I really like planning it all out and micromanaging the shit over every last detail, and I definitely try to go for variety of styles and moods even to the point of forcing some square pegs rather than have 2 hours worth of similar tracks that can snap together smoothly any which way. And yes, it feels very much out of step with people who do this professionally and get consistent paid gigs.

i think maybe for me it has to do with getting into this stuff in the late 80s and early 90s, when a mix (in physical form) was a lot more about being an artist statement vs a performance document, and there wasn't enough technical knowledge to do that sort of thing in a club setting. both on the part of producers making tools and djs themselves. every time i find myself mixing about as well as my heroes i have to remind myself i'm not inventing the technique as i go, i'm just copying them! it's like thinking you're newton because you understand calculus thoroughly

nowadays with streaming (of all sorts) and phones in the club, and cross platform marketing and so on, i feel like it's much more all of a piece, and a lot of the people i know who are 10-15 years younger than me skew toward that. i have a personal tendency to see this stuff as "background music" because there's so much else going on, but i think that's uncharitable. i saw an amazing jam city set recently with lots of wild projections behind him, and he was dressed like he dresses and the whole thing was mesmerizing. i think it was that horror movie tile shower cubicle dj stream, but in london. so he has to complement visual aspect, and compete with other visuals. on the other hand, i feel like it would have been a lot easier to get a college student to just lie back on a beanbag with headphones and closed eyes to "go on a journey maaaaaan" in 1995. so when i do mix like this i also feel a bit guilty, as if i am putting big demands (or unrealistic expectations) on the listener.

the good news is that i just do this as a fun practice and i am mainly making fun personal favorite mixtapes so i don't fiddle with the stereo while driving or trying to work. win win

Right, I mostly try to play newer tracks rather than classics, but the approach is 100% driven by what was drawing me in during the 90s. I really love the idea of going on a journey with the mix like you described. I don't think it puts demands on the listener, they either roll with it or not, and there's no point for me unless I'm doing it in my own stubborn way.
