tempted to nominate the entire cassetteboy catalog, but won't, as that would be a nightmare for me

cassette-boyeeeeeee

Karl Malone, Thursday, 21 February 2019 15:35 (five years ago) link

xposts fionnland that's very nice of you, but i'll be ok with the spotify list! it really doesn't take me too long to find them and drag/drop, and i take a strange satisfaction in repetitive processes (hard to explain but true)

Karl Malone, Thursday, 21 February 2019 15:37 (five years ago) link

Special mention for the Earache comp "The World's Shortest Album"

Also the entire "scum" field-recording grindcore genre*

https://youtu.be/LJpvIofDZbo

*might not be a genre.

we're far from the challops now (voodoo chili), Thursday, 21 February 2019 17:30 (five years ago) link

Man, it is not fair to this poll that the Ramones, Wire and the Minutemen were simply so good at this

Yes. Early Beatles and Buddy Holly too.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 21 February 2019 17:30 (five years ago) link

Also, I would def count myself as a Parquet Courts fan if all their songs were under 90 seconds

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 21 February 2019 17:34 (five years ago) link

Meat Puppets - In A Car (1:21)

goats eat grandma (NickB), Thursday, 21 February 2019 17:40 (five years ago) link

Parquet Courts - NYC Observation (1:22)

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 21 February 2019 18:06 (five years ago) link

Wire - Fragile (1:18)

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 21 February 2019 18:08 (five years ago) link

Maybe we don't have enough songs by those bands yet

imago, Thursday, 21 February 2019 18:09 (five years ago) link

I think maybe some more Minutemen is on the menu

imago, Thursday, 21 February 2019 18:09 (five years ago) link

(This is all a cunning ruse to votesplit everything)

imago, Thursday, 21 February 2019 18:10 (five years ago) link

The Breeders - Fortunately Gone (1:45)

Chris L, Thursday, 21 February 2019 18:21 (five years ago) link

I am a bit concerned about the results being dominated by minutemen, wire, and the ramones. and maybe TMBG. although maybe votesplitting may in fact solve that problem. Or maybe it's not a problem at all, and other songs be mixed in nicely? i dunno.

has there ever been a poll like this where you're only allowed to vote for 3 different tracks by the same artist? would that be weird?

Karl Malone, Thursday, 21 February 2019 18:27 (five years ago) link

i mean, i love wire with all my heart, but there's no way i'm going to list more than 3 wire songs in my list of the top 50 songs of all time under 2 minutes. no band is that good. but then again, i can see like 5 different people saying "fuck it" and putting double nickels on the dime as their top 20

Karl Malone, Thursday, 21 February 2019 18:28 (five years ago) link

Yeah, there's enough stuff where I don't think it's gonna be a problem. And if the top 20 ends up all Ramones and Chuck Berry, well, they deserve it for being so good at this!

There weren't any artist restrictions on the 10 minutes poll, but I definitely think that these handful of bands having so many songs nominated will definitely water down their placement.

yeah pretty similar! bit more emotional development in the morricone though.

large bananas pregnant (ledge), Thursday, 21 February 2019 20:15 (five years ago) link

ok i know i talked shit about "sabotage tracks" earlier but uhh if this farrah abraham song was intended to be that, it backfired, this is insane, i think i love this? what the fuck? this is SO FUCKING WEIRD

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Thursday, 21 February 2019 20:30 (five years ago) link

i am still recovering from listening to it last night. it's like it the rebecca black "friday" song got really experimental

Karl Malone, Thursday, 21 February 2019 20:32 (five years ago) link

what i like about it is that it only takes like 20 minutes or so to listen to it 10 times

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Thursday, 21 February 2019 20:34 (five years ago) link

lol, i can't wait to read that thread later

Karl Malone, Thursday, 21 February 2019 20:35 (five years ago) link

i'm thinking i will maybe never listen to it ever again, because i didn't think it was bad...it was beyond bad or good, it's just way the hell out there, like an autotune eating itself

Karl Malone, Thursday, 21 February 2019 20:35 (five years ago) link

my official prediction is that Elvis Costello is gonna dominate the Top 10

frogbs, Thursday, 21 February 2019 20:37 (five years ago) link

dunno about that, he doesn't really have many songs this short, especially not fan favorites

afaik we were never really given a good explanation for this. it's still kind of an open mystery. every time I listen to it I think of this YouTube comment: "if Captain Beefheart made 808s & Heartbreak"

frogbs, Thursday, 21 February 2019 20:39 (five years ago) link

xp - wait a minute...I thought "Beyond Belief" qualified but apparently it doesn't

frogbs, Thursday, 21 February 2019 20:40 (five years ago) link

not even close!

sold out in presale (sleeve), Thursday, 21 February 2019 20:41 (five years ago) link

a bunch of songs on get happy are slightly shorter than 2 mins and two on My Aim Is True are significantly shorter.

likely my #1:

A Frames - Hostage Crisis (1:39)

One of those Grind/Power Violence songs that really goes places, instead of just splattering everywhere

Weekend Nachos - For Life (1:05)

eva logorrhea (bendy), Thursday, 21 February 2019 22:10 (five years ago) link

huh, that must be a different "A Frames" than the band I know from Seattle?

sold out in presale (sleeve), Thursday, 21 February 2019 22:17 (five years ago) link

No! The Seattle one!

eva logorrhea (bendy), Thursday, 21 February 2019 22:20 (five years ago) link

unless you were mistaking my Weekend Nachos hot take with the A Frames

eva logorrhea (bendy), Thursday, 21 February 2019 22:21 (five years ago) link

no I just couldn't find that song on Discogs!

"Radiation Generation" is my favorite of theirs but idk the track time and I used up all my noms on US hardcore tracks
