ILM's 2018 End of Year Tracks & Albums Poll / VOTING THREAD

I've got the flu, so spent a good part of this afternoon listening to tracks bigged up in this thread. There are now six or seven strong new contenders for inclusion in my votes. I struggled last year with new music discovery, having devoted most of my time to building my DJ boxes with old music, so this was most welcome.

both the simmy and sun-el albums deserve space on your lists

the hasty cramming is the most fun part of this whole thing

Sun-el was my best discovery from last year's rollout, and the album was my summer soundtrack. The sun-el thread then led me to Simmy, whose tracks are proving damned difficult to whittle down right now (but I've got it down to three).

Damn, I guess I just figured someone (anyone?!) would've voted for the closest thing to a good New Order 2018 single - The Liminanas' "The Gift" (featuring Peter Hook!). Granted, it's not apex New Order, but definitely in the top end of "Waiting for the Siren's Call"-era New Order.

the closest thing to a good new order single last year was krystal klear - neutron dance

^ brilliant record, in my ballot's top ten

budo jeru, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:45 (five years ago) link

this is the first year i've nominated, and will vote soon. also my first time campaigning !

so, what is my favorite* track (song) of the year ? it's called "trouble" by a band called grapetooth. goofy wonky synth-pop with beastie boys-esque shout vocals, almost like the B boys did a half-assed approximation of a "low"-era bowie track with shaggy but compelling results. the music video is also a real joy imo:

*not really it's just tons of fun and i haven't heard anybody talk about it round these parts

budo jeru, Thursday, 17 January 2019 00:03 (five years ago) link

Don't know the band, but 'grapetooth' is a literal translation of the Chinese name for Spain.

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 17 January 2019 00:31 (five years ago) link

xp

does it mean that spain is like a giant tooth full of grapes just dangling off the end of europe ? or is it more like Land of the Purple-Toothed Winos ?

budo jeru, Thursday, 17 January 2019 00:36 (five years ago) link

Sooo...due to uh "IT issues" I think we're going to extend the deadline by a week.

Official announcement to follow

seandalai, Thursday, 17 January 2019 02:11 (five years ago) link

Spotify is blocked by local government where I am but I had cause to be in a neighbouring canton where they had spotify booths in many of the local bars, I thought I would give the playlist a cursory listen because playlists of huge numbers of songs is a minor form of incarceration. I started with something called cosmic sheldrake, don't know if i was unlucky but this is truly absymal, I've worked in an office before, I've heard that Imagine Dragon song that sounds like fascism about making packed lunches. And mates, this garbage is the lute playing cousin of that, the kind of compadre that is singing about a local river while making plans to pollute it with toxic dye via a management company in his brothers name

No

haven’t laughed this hard seems like forever, ty

budo jeru, Thursday, 17 January 2019 05:15 (five years ago) link

Many xps- loanwords in Chinese don't usually get new characters, so something with the same sound is assigned. grape tooth = putao ya = Portugal, so not Spain, which would be xibanya, 'west class tooth,' yes this is a bit off topic now

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 17 January 2019 07:46 (five years ago) link

"Vyrgin Island" off that Panama Keys release is excellent too

― seandalai, Thursday, January 17, 2019 2:11 AM (fourteen hours ago)

This would be great for me b/c the deadline coincides with both a house inspection and a funeral and I've been stressing about those instead of finishing my ballot. Poor priorities, I know.

emil.y, Thursday, 17 January 2019 16:15 (five years ago) link

I also appreciate this extension, it's been a very busy week

sleeve, Thursday, 17 January 2019 16:18 (five years ago) link

So is this officially official now?

breastcrawl, Thursday, 17 January 2019 18:40 (five years ago) link

Thanks for the extension guys, I was starting to panic at getting my tracks ballot done, having spent many hours riffling through the spotify play list (thanks forks...). I didn't manage to get many nominations in this year, but while I'm here let me lobby for Julia Jacklin, in particular 'Head Alone', if not just for the delight of the bridge.

Hello seandalai: When I voted, I chose "mixed" ballot, then stupidly forgot to put the extra line break between the ranked and unranked lists. I'm fine with just ranking the whole thing if that's easier.

beard papa, Thursday, 17 January 2019 22:47 (five years ago) link

whew I was slamming together my ballots last minute style the extension is very welcome, ty!

Frobisher, Thursday, 17 January 2019 23:32 (five years ago) link

if you haven't heard it yet, Sloppy Jane's 'Mindy' is one of the wildest songs I've heard in a while.

Thanks for this! I liked the song so much I streamed the album, and liked the album so much I bought it and have listened to it about four times in the last two days. If I get around to voting in this poll, it'll make my ballot.

When is the extension to?

curmudgeon, Friday, 18 January 2019 03:50 (five years ago) link

grapetooth are great, i second that recommendation

exploded view also awesome, i'm going to see anika in a couple weeks here with a local dub punk band called cool flowers opening for them, looking forward to it

It's official: voting will now end at Midnight PST on Friday, January 25th, 2019 (i.e. Saturday morning in the UK).

Can a friendly mod update the top of the thread?

saer, Friday, 18 January 2019 07:56 (five years ago) link

Yay @ extension but also boo @ extension as I think I was almost done but now have an extra week to listen to more stuff and then try and work out what I'm going to have to axe to fit it in

groovypanda, Friday, 18 January 2019 08:07 (five years ago) link

oh i had a look and Lee Burton's 1420hz has been deleted from youtube must have had a run in with the authorities in Athens

if anyone wants to re-add it then there is another copy of it here

saer, Friday, 18 January 2019 08:16 (five years ago) link

Would it be possible for me too to resubmit my ballot? I did it in a haste, and now I've realised I'd like to add and change a few things, if it's not too much of a hassle?

Tuomas, Friday, 18 January 2019 11:47 (five years ago) link

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes it! I found it through a very unlikely acquaintance's sharing it and got kind of obsessed with a few of the songs on there, but I have no idea how he found it or how popular it is or much of anything about them honestly. They've never been mentioned on ILX apparently? I thought I might have been taking crazy pills because virtually everything else ever recorded has been mentioned on here at some point!!

There are 7 of the 9 songs from the robyn album nominated but the only one i like isn't.

The two best songs on the album are the ones that didn't get nominated smfh

billstevejim, Friday, 18 January 2019 19:37 (five years ago) link

Yay on the extension! There were four pretty big albums that I've yet to check out that I wanted to get at least one listen in before voting.

Maggie Rogers - Fallingwater

i’m glad someone nominated this bc it’s prob gonna sneak onto my ballot, the album made me like it even more
