in fact i'd say the poles of this hierarchy are v much interrelated things

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 1 October 2018 20:26 (five years ago) link

well yeah it's somewhat reductive.

Winner of the 2018 Great British Bae *cough* (ledge), Monday, 1 October 2018 20:29 (five years ago) link

Joke's on us probably, I can see AE never having thought of clear distinctions between '1, 2, 3, 4' to begin with.

(a poll between the four discs would be a dumb idea imo but ymmv)

i really like the idea of song polls for each volume

mostly bc i like listening to these records so much and having a reason to spend even more time with them sounds great to me

i need someone to talk me through the ones that haven't clicked yet, like t1a1 and bbqbbq.

switch ambient ae and machine ae and I'm right there with ya. 4 is the only Session I wouldn't consider voting for in a poll.

ditto, any excuse to revisit, plus I'd love to get some other perspectives to maybe see certain tracks in a different light

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 1 October 2018 20:50 (five years ago) link

xp t1a1 makes little sense except at seismic volume levels when it becomes the best ever, chthonic boom-bap

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Monday, 1 October 2018 21:08 (five years ago) link

bbqbbq

i think this one is very nice if you have a quality sound situation, headphones or big loud speakers or whatever, and can just focus on the ingenious little bends in the voicing.

j., Monday, 1 October 2018 21:10 (five years ago) link

i'll crank up the volume tomorrow then.

Toss another shrimpl air on the bbqbbq (ledge), Monday, 1 October 2018 21:33 (five years ago) link

another vote for doing separate polls for each volume.

macropuente (map), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 03:07 (five years ago) link

i think my volume ranking is 2 > 1 > 3 > 4

i love getting lost in 'shrimripl casual'. also 'turbile epic casual'. also 'frane casual'

i think my favorite shorter ambient pieces are "sinistrailab air" and "carefree counter dronal." the latter especially always sounds so warm and friendly to me.

macropuente (map), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 03:18 (five years ago) link

i think bbqbbq is self-evidently great. weird pensive curiosity.

at this point the only tracks i'm not completely gaga over are 't1a1' and '9 chr0'. i feel like the former is a little boring honestly, though i do like the mood it settles into for the last 5 minutes. the latter is cool but often the sound profile of it gets on my nerves, it's those very loud mid-heavy blocks of sound.

macropuente (map), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 03:29 (five years ago) link

3 just kinda has the widest variety of moods

on further listening i was wrong and you are right, there is a lot of variety between the tracks. however i'm not sure there as much variety or development within each track? or maybe they just haven't hooked me as much as the others for whatever inexplicable reason.

there's a lot of between track variety in 2 too...

I don't think of this as 4 different albums - I tend to listen to the whole thing on shuffle tbh.

haha and isn't it bqbqbq ?

maybe? [flips burger]

you're missing some u+k transitions if you listen on shuffle - four of seven to 32a_reflected, ****mirrage to column thirteen****

bqbqbq is definitely a highlight for me, so tactile (AE's stuff generally is but even so). Vol. 1 is still my favourite at this point but I'm not sure if that's just because I've spent the most time with it.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 11:49 (five years ago) link

bqbqbq is on my 'Music That Sounds Like Super Metroid' playlist

I get this, but as with so many of these, "9 chr0" shifts gears about five minutes in and settles down, gets more spacious and zoned out.

okay... you're right. i tried V2 at lunch and it's so much nicer in that order

Today I'm enjoying:

- the snarling, thudding tremens of violvoic. sounds incredible on headphones, especially at the 12.40 - 13:00 mark
- Ligeti / Kubrick vibes on xflood

NTS Sessions

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 20:21 (five years ago) link

Just pick one of the sessions and check it out. There's plenty of good stuff on all 4.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 20:22 (five years ago) link

yeah def hop into the new records. i'd say start with 2, it gives you a p good sense of what they're doing

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 20:29 (five years ago) link

also i think it has the strongest opening run

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 20:30 (five years ago) link

I think these are all good tracks to start with:

gonk steady one on NTS 1
tt1pd on NTS 3
column 13 on NTS 4

or else just go back to Exai which feels like where their current phase really started and is probably less daunting

silverfish, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 20:32 (five years ago) link

I honestly think the new tracks, although lengthy, are easier going than stuff off of Exai and Elseq.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 20:37 (five years ago) link

^^

you might not feel that way when the first track gets going ... just trust us on this

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 20:45 (five years ago) link

oh i got a lot of time for autechre - exai is great too, forgot about that one

i mean i always rep hard for garbage tho from TRI REPETAE, and vordhosbn which is like my fave ambient piece ever

montoya (Ross), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 21:09 (five years ago) link

guessing you mean vletrmx

Toss another shrimpl air on the bbqbbq (ledge), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 21:35 (five years ago) link

yeah Ross I just mean they deliberately started this album with its most off-putting tracks, nothing to do with anyone's level of acclimation to Ae

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 22:05 (five years ago) link

So weird, I like the opening run of #1 too much and have to remind myself to spread my listening and avoid burnout.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Wednesday, 3 October 2018 00:13 (five years ago) link

They're great but you have to admit most albums start with one of their hookier numbers yeah

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Wednesday, 3 October 2018 00:22 (five years ago) link

Should we poll one Session at a time or have all four going at once?

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 00:58 (five years ago) link

one at a time, go in order

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 October 2018 01:08 (five years ago) link

My favorite "album mix" of NTS tracks:

1. l3 ctrl
2. e0
3. icari
4. four of seven
5. 32a_reflected

I have a number of other album length mini playlists but this feels the most accessible and album like for someone wanting to get into the Sessions. Includes tracks from 1, 2, and 3.

octobeard, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 01:57 (five years ago) link

Wow, listening to these as actual 'albums' is like hearing the finished version of Smile for the first time. It all starts making a lot more sense. I'm on NTS 3 today after enjoying NTS 2 yesterday.

Quite enjoying Acid Mwan Idle's dubbed out diving bell vibes; makes me think of a more abstract Two Lone Swordsmen

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Wednesday, 3 October 2018 11:27 (five years ago) link

yeah i love "acid mwan idle"

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 October 2018 11:42 (five years ago) link

it just kinda sounds like some evil ritual

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 October 2018 11:42 (five years ago) link

I've only gotten through NTS 1 & 2 so far, but I'm finally starting on 3. Really gotta wait for the right afternoon to get into these.

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 3 October 2018 20:29 (five years ago) link

tt1pd is a headbanger

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 3 October 2018 21:50 (five years ago) link

If you moved "frane casual" and "column thirteen" to Session 3, then Session 3 would contain the highest number of tracks I cannot live without.

But Session 2 has "xflood," "gonk tuf hi," "dummy casual pt2," "violvoic," and "e0," which are all 5/5 imo.

If we ever poll the entire box, not sure I could pick between 2 and 3.

1 has "gonk steady one" and "four of seven" back to back, both of which are brilliant, but 1 has the highest number of tracks I might be tempted to skip.

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 21:56 (five years ago) link

I don't really get frane casual, just spins on the spot in a place that doesn't interest me. Though the fat yet hollow thrummm that develops in the background is something I could get into.

Toss another shrimpl air on the bbqbbq (ledge), Thursday, 4 October 2018 08:05 (five years ago) link

Trying to go back through the first 3 sessions to make a playlist of my favorites, but now it all seems strangely unfamiliar. So Autechre.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 4 October 2018 21:38 (five years ago) link

I like how everyone is afraid to actually make the poll

Or maybe no one wants to type out all of those ridiculous titles
