Joke's on us probably, I can see AE never having thought of clear distinctions between '1, 2, 3, 4' to begin with.

i really like the idea of song polls for each volume

mostly bc i like listening to these records so much and having a reason to spend even more time with them sounds great to me

i need someone to talk me through the ones that haven't clicked yet, like t1a1 and bbqbbq.

switch ambient ae and machine ae and I'm right there with ya. 4 is the only Session I wouldn't consider voting for in a poll.

ditto, any excuse to revisit, plus I'd love to get some other perspectives to maybe see certain tracks in a different light

xp t1a1 makes little sense except at seismic volume levels when it becomes the best ever, chthonic boom-bap

i think this one is very nice if you have a quality sound situation, headphones or big loud speakers or whatever, and can just focus on the ingenious little bends in the voicing.

i'll crank up the volume tomorrow then.

another vote for doing separate polls for each volume.

i think my volume ranking is 2 > 1 > 3 > 4

i love getting lost in 'shrimripl casual'. also 'turbile epic casual'. also 'frane casual'

i think my favorite shorter ambient pieces are "sinistrailab air" and "carefree counter dronal." the latter especially always sounds so warm and friendly to me.

i think bbqbbq is self-evidently great. weird pensive curiosity.

at this point the only tracks i'm not completely gaga over are 't1a1' and '9 chr0'. i feel like the former is a little boring honestly, though i do like the mood it settles into for the last 5 minutes. the latter is cool but often the sound profile of it gets on my nerves, it's those very loud mid-heavy blocks of sound.

3 just kinda has the widest variety of moods

on further listening i was wrong and you are right, there is a lot of variety between the tracks. however i'm not sure there as much variety or development within each track? or maybe they just haven't hooked me as much as the others for whatever inexplicable reason.

there's a lot of between track variety in 2 too...

I don't think of this as 4 different albums - I tend to listen to the whole thing on shuffle tbh.

bqbqbq is definitely a highlight for me, so tactile (AE's stuff generally is but even so). Vol. 1 is still my favourite at this point but I'm not sure if that's just because I've spent the most time with it.

I get this, but as with so many of these, "9 chr0" shifts gears about five minutes in and settles down, gets more spacious and zoned out.

okay... you're right. i tried V2 at lunch and it's so much nicer in that order

Today I'm enjoying:

- the snarling, thudding tremens of violvoic. sounds incredible on headphones, especially at the 12.40 - 13:00 mark
- Ligeti / Kubrick vibes on xflood

Just pick one of the sessions and check it out. There's plenty of good stuff on all 4.

yeah def hop into the new records. i'd say start with 2, it gives you a p good sense of what they're doing

also i think it has the strongest opening run

I think these are all good tracks to start with:

gonk steady one on NTS 1
tt1pd on NTS 3
column 13 on NTS 4

or else just go back to Exai which feels like where their current phase really started and is probably less daunting

I honestly think the new tracks, although lengthy, are easier going than stuff off of Exai and Elseq.

i mean i always rep hard for garbage tho from TRI REPETAE, and vordhosbn which is like my fave ambient piece ever

yeah Ross I just mean they deliberately started this album with its most off-putting tracks, nothing to do with anyone's level of acclimation to Ae

So weird, I like the opening run of #1 too much and have to remind myself to spread my listening and avoid burnout.

They're great but you have to admit most albums start with one of their hookier numbers yeah

I have a number of other album length mini playlists but this feels the most accessible and album like for someone wanting to get into the Sessions. Includes tracks from 1, 2, and 3.

Wow, listening to these as actual 'albums' is like hearing the finished version of Smile for the first time. It all starts making a lot more sense. I'm on NTS 3 today after enjoying NTS 2 yesterday.

Quite enjoying Acid Mwan Idle's dubbed out diving bell vibes; makes me think of a more abstract Two Lone Swordsmen

I've only gotten through NTS 1 & 2 so far, but I'm finally starting on 3. Really gotta wait for the right afternoon to get into these.

tt1pd is a headbanger

If you moved "frane casual" and "column thirteen" to Session 3, then Session 3 would contain the highest number of tracks I cannot live without.

But Session 2 has "xflood," "gonk tuf hi," "dummy casual pt2," "violvoic," and "e0," which are all 5/5 imo.

If we ever poll the entire box, not sure I could pick between 2 and 3.

1 has "gonk steady one" and "four of seven" back to back, both of which are brilliant, but 1 has the highest number of tracks I might be tempted to skip.

I don't really get frane casual, just spins on the spot in a place that doesn't interest me. Though the fat yet hollow thrummm that develops in the background is something I could get into.

Trying to go back through the first 3 sessions to make a playlist of my favorites, but now it all seems strangely unfamiliar. So Autechre.
