I think at some point they got split out into "okay, what's your permanent username" vs "okay, what's your changeable display name"

The effect is a bit "the wind changed unexpectedly" in some cases.

Many of my posts were meant more as a defense of your posts itt. As in why in the world would someone lie about lurking for 20 years?

ross, since you started posting volubly you seem to have veered on a predictable schedule between soliciting pity and validation to bolster your self-confidence, and acting out to provoke hostility that would confirm your self-judgments of worthlessness, then 'storming off' until you feel the need for contact again so that you can test the cycle again and come a little bit closer to deciding whether the eternal drama of acceptance and rejection will come out in your favor or not and whether its outcome will be blamed on others or on you. so far the effect on us is not hugely detrimental or permanent but it's becoming a little tedious. is it really necessary to co-opt us into this private emotional drama that you are in the midst of working through? we would evidently take you without all that.

you should take a breather from this thread for a second. i know you have a history with some posters and have quotes and stuff, but i also think some people are just making jokes to kind of deflate the situation a bit, or just for the sake of making a joke. i'm not saying you're wrong to stand your ground or anything, but i've been there before and it's easy to start saying some things that you might feel regretful about later on

i've been posting on and off since 2001 and have met some cool ppl here but have never rly felt like a "regular," and if it didn't happen back when i was a bored teenager w/ no job it's prob not going to happen now that i mainly post during slow afternoons at work

every time i'm tempted to give up ilx i go read any other online forum for a while, almost all of them are either tedious or extremely anxiety-producing next to our little quiet space here

I'd say I was a regular, I'd put JD in the list of good people I recognise (along with the other other JD), you are right about the tedious or otherwise other forums. I know a great many of the old names have gone from here, most to fb. But I've never known a place that has a wider bunch of issues discussed, and closer to actual news than actual news sites.
