The Beat song wasn't a hit in the UK, I only vaguely know it, it's very indie sounding. Never liked "The Cutter" much or "Poison Arrow". Voted "Love My Way".

Dancing in heaven was my favorite song during the brief span when it was on the radio (8th grade?) Anything with busy synths out front I’d go crazy for

Whenever You're On My Mind best song here but I wouldn't call it new wave

Rio is an all-time jam. The whole sax solo segment into the final verse & chorus is sick.

Each volume seems to have one or two songs I've never heard of, let alone heard. This one has "Teenage Enema Nurse," which I am now listening to for the first time ever. Wacky!

Teenage Enema Nurses in Bondage was a KROQ staple, such a fun song.

I'm surprised Save It For Later didn't make the UK top 40. It seems more familiar than that and they had biggish hits either side.

Who are these embarrasing TV fuxxors mocking the dancing in the US video?

If I Could Only Rename My Member (Noel Emits), Wednesday, 28 March 2018 18:04 (six years ago) link

People talk about The Smiths being one of those bands that'll never re-form, but it's painfully true of The Beat... VH-1 had a good go at trying to get them back together, but according to Wakeling they fucked it up so royally that it pretty much ensured the band would never reform.

lot of really good songs here but Save It For Later is just a miracle. One of those songs that, when I remember hearing it as a brand new song from the band all the theater kids loved, I feel like -- wow, lucky me, I got to be there for that moment. I consider "I Confess" even better but as it's not on this poll that's neither here nor there

yeah ‘i confess’ is probably my favourite song by the beat, but talk about going out on a high - that whole album is glorious. such a shame that the uk had given up giving a shit about them by that stage

Save It is like a happy Sister Ray.

The lack of love for "Sign of the Times" is tearing me apart.

dorsalstop, Thursday, 29 March 2018 21:22 (six years ago) link

"Sign of the Times" is a good song - I maybe like rather than love it - but it had a lot of tough competition.
