Remy, I'm happy with that. Sorry again for being a dick.

So, John Justen, looking forward to your input on this topic!

"Sorry"?? Call yourself an internet hardman? DOM never says sorry.

Upt0eleven, Friday, 16 May 2008 09:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Dom cries himself to sleep at night.

Mark C, Friday, 16 May 2008 10:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Marc C marinades his balls nightly in a blend of Bovril and Dom's tears.

I just like writing that. It's too bad it's too late to suggest new usernames for John, though.

John Justen, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:41 (fifteen years ago) link

how exactly are you going to test them, do you have a recipe or methodology?

estela, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:43 (fifteen years ago) link

I am looking forward to hearing the results of this v. v. important test.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:44 (fifteen years ago) link

lol i am not, i have actually only met one american ever who liked vege/mar/mite, everyone else has been uniformly scathing about them.

estela, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:49 (fifteen years ago) link

I haven't met any non-antipodeans who like it either.

wilter, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Hmmmm - the person I stayed with on Friday night expressed a preference for one over the other, and didn't say she hated either! (Her husband had Australian snacks in the cupboard, and that is how we got to talking about international snack foods...). Anyway, R0bbi3 is an American! So there are a few of them out there.

Also, I truly believe John will eat or drink anything now. With the possible exceptions of tofu and Hardee's curly fries.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:52 (fifteen years ago) link

we're having a cocktail party this evening.

do i set out the marmite and vegemite and bovril to see if anyone takes the challenge, or do i leave them in the cupboard to moulder in peace?

lxy, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:05 (fifteen years ago) link

^^oops

jergïns, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:05 (fifteen years ago) link

jergïns, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Most confusing post of the day? Very, very possible.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Sara, don't make me send you some Bovril...

Mark C, Monday, 19 May 2008 09:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Mark C, I don't fear your empty threats!

Sara R-C, Monday, 19 May 2008 15:21 (fifteen years ago) link

My lack of fear may be due to the fact that I have lost the key to my mailbox, however.

Sara R-C, Monday, 19 May 2008 15:22 (fifteen years ago) link

QUICK RANKINGS - MORE LATER

WINNER: BOVRIL
2ND PLACE: NOT EATING
3RD PLACE: BARELY EDGED BY VEGEMITE
4TH: MARMITE

in many ways i found it difficult to distinguish marmite and vegemite - bovril though was pretty good

i am the only one of our testers that feels this way though

John Justen, Monday, 19 May 2008 15:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Can I petition to have the thread title changed to "BOVRIL RULZ" etc?

Mark C, Monday, 19 May 2008 16:00 (fifteen years ago) link

remy, bless him, pocketed the bovril

jergïns, Monday, 19 May 2008 16:47 (fifteen years ago) link

i even dipped my finger in it on the way home. so did rrrickey, and up to the knuckle.

remy bean, Monday, 19 May 2008 17:58 (fifteen years ago) link

HI DERE OUT OF CONTEXT THREAD

HI DERE, Monday, 19 May 2008 19:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I was in the supermarket in the "international" section and they had a product that looked exactly like Bovril, same bottle and font I think, but it ws called something else.

Plz explain, Mark C. Is it export Bovril because Bovril is such a bad name??

wilter, Monday, 19 May 2008 22:01 (fifteen years ago) link

As far as I can tell Bonox is the Aussie equivalent, but it is in a vegemite-style jar rather than Bovril-style, being also made by Kraft.

Or was it Oxo Spread?

Mark C, Monday, 19 May 2008 22:31 (fifteen years ago) link

p.s. that is not the real (or at least British) Bovril label.

Mark C, Monday, 19 May 2008 22:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I can't remember, I might buy it.

wilter, Monday, 19 May 2008 22:32 (fifteen years ago) link

While I appreciate reading the rankings (LOL at "NOT EATING"), I would like to see scorecards and photographs, please, Mr. Justen.

Mark C, Thursday, 22 May 2008 09:32 (fifteen years ago) link

uptoeleven Nick, what do you think of Bovril?

Mark C, Friday, 23 May 2008 10:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I *think* i like it but my experiences have been mostly confined to the terraces of various football grounds in winter months. I don't think this is an entirely fair test as I'm going to be in love with anything cockles-warming in such nads-shrinking situations.

I can say with confidence, however, that both marmite and vegemite be GROSS. Bovril pwns by default but I shall test it under climate-controlled conditions this weekend and report back.

Upt0eleven, Friday, 23 May 2008 11:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Smashing - don't forget, good white bread, lightly toasted, generously buttered, with Bovril spread thinly and eaten while still hot. Man, I wonder if I can arrange for this to be my lunch?

Mark C, Friday, 23 May 2008 11:29 (fifteen years ago) link

I should have a party where all of the finger food is made of marmite/vegemite/bovril.

HI DERE, Friday, 23 May 2008 13:24 (fifteen years ago) link

do you hate your guests?

jergïns, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:09 (fifteen years ago) link

it came to me late the other night, when i was drunk with a friend and we were doing some tasting

marmite's a salt lick. in 'edible' form
