Took a break, not related, but did I miss some reevaluation where people decided Drake wasn't hilariously awful?

huh. a good start

77. Jazmine Sullivan - Mascara

This is pretty good! I don't think that's ever been my reaction any other year to the first track so hopefully not a jinx, only criticism is some clunk lyrics wise and the potential for getting a little audio wallpapery, doesnt so much end as just drift off somewhere, still 7/10

76. Radiohead - Spectre

This sounds exactly like "Radiohead writes a song for a James Bond film" which is somehow super super gross to me, not in a "oh how could they" way but in the terrible combination of the worst of both of those two things. Remember when a James Bond theme wasn't an automatic bullet full of dull shot into whoever was making it? not a radiohead hater but this is phoned in no effort garbage. 3/10

75 THUNDERCAT FT. FLYING LOTUS AND KAMASI WASHINGTON "Them Changes"

I think I can't be impartial about this because i bear the deep scars of guitar store lifetime but the noodly watery envelope filter bass shit in this is so fucking grating and unlistenable that i cant give it a fair shake. shades of shrapnel records if they had put out anything not made by the whitest people available in new jersey. i get grabbed for moments, theres hooks but then saxophone or "blurgle bluggle wuuba wubba squee squa" bubbles up again and i just cant fucking take that shit. still better than the radiohead track. 4/10

74 FLOATING POINTS "Silhouettes (I, II, III)"

kind of reminds me of up bustle and out except for that part where something interesting happens eventually 5/10

i started listening to the nominations playlist a few weeks back, and seriously considered voting, but then after about a dozen or so tracks of tepid garbage, I decided I would rather listen to Bach and Roedelius and it isn't like my voting would make any difference in anyone's life, so I just gave up.

sarahell, Tuesday, 19 January 2016 21:45 (eight years ago) link

ditto

hopefully gaz will place high

lute bro (brimstead), Tuesday, 19 January 2016 21:51 (eight years ago) link

my one regret in not voting.

Also, I did not formally release my Trap Queen IDM parody in time to be nominated.

20 the 1975 "Ugh!"

19 JACK Ü FT. JUSTIN BIEBER "Where Are Ü Now" (380 points, 14 votes)

this is innocuous mushy pop ballad sung well enough and then hamfisted uptempo then back to mush then back to yeah i get the idea 4/10

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Thursday, 21 January 2016 18:09 (eight years ago) link

going to jump back and forth here a bit since the top ten is happening i think

10 DAVID BOWIE "Blackstar"

im about to piss of a bunch of people probably but uh. its ok? vocal doubling is dull, hate the saxophone intrusion, dont like the drum sound choices, moments where it almost catches my ear but yeah. not a fan so far. 4 minute mark might be turning that around though? ehhh as a guy who likes disjointed things more than most, this is kind of a mess. sorry, all respect but just no. 5/10

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Thursday, 21 January 2016 18:19 (eight years ago) link

Blackstar album better than Blackstar song.

9. DONNIE TRUMPET AND THE SOCIAL EXPERIMENT "Sweet Candy"

So a series of reactions. Name prepared me for some twee fuckstick garbage shit. was wrong. saw this on SNL i think and thought it was horrible live. On record, it's apparently great. Yay suprises. 8/10

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Thursday, 21 January 2016 18:43 (eight years ago) link

8. Missy Elliott - "WTF" feat. id rather not talk about it

It's Missy so clearly it rules, appreciate the mostly lack of Pharell although its less horrible than usual, maybe she yelled at him enough to suck less. there can alwaays be less pharell though. docked 1 point for pharrell content. 7/10

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Thursday, 21 January 2016 18:57 (eight years ago) link

Pharrell is the cursed sword of pop music. -1 to everything.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 21 January 2016 18:59 (eight years ago) link

sometimes i try to think about a song like, idk, "get lucky" by daft punk ft. anyone else and i like the song more.

17 GRIMES "Kill V. Maim" (384 points, 11 votes)

what little voice fucking whine shit nonsense is this all chirpy and terrible. its like everything people hate abt j-pop with a coda of evanescence thrown in at minute 2:45. or a whole song based around the worst instincts of lady gaga. people really miss kreayshawn huh. fuck this song. 1/10

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Thursday, 21 January 2016 19:05 (eight years ago) link

the sixth best song on her masterful album art angels but still a solid 8/10. maybe 9.

nomar, Thursday, 21 January 2016 19:06 (eight years ago) link

16 SUSANNE SUNDFØR "Fade Away" (406 points, 10 votes, 2 first-place votes)

i think im down with this, liking the analog synth thing going on, weird knife/1989 blank space taylor swift/eurythmics vibe which on the face of it makes no sense at all and i know that but hey i just gotta be meeeeeee. ha i swear the keyboard sound is take straight from "i want to break free" by queen which is 1000% ok by me. and hooray for understanding that just over 3 minutes is the perfect length. 9/10
