I've checked with the judges and 808 State records prior to "Gorgeous" do not qualify here, sorry.

21. underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman
20. underworld - second toughest in the infants
19. underworld - that other shitty one

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 21:49 (nineteen years ago) link

my point precisely jsoulja

i WAS gonna mention 'A Hundred Days Off', i was surprised it seemed to get good reviews all round but it's an album of occasional great moments rather than thru and thru quality and freshness

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 June 2004 21:50 (nineteen years ago) link

let's face it, "home listening [X]" was a big pile of ass

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 21:51 (nineteen years ago) link

DIE SABOTEUR

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 3 June 2004 21:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Leftfield:

'Leftism': only real flaw is it's painful '95-ness, if that makes sense. i enjoyed that year tho so it suits me. the poem at the end is bloody silly tho

'rhythm & Stealth': a bit too much boring minimalist thudthud but a lot of fantastic moments still - not quite worth the wait tho i guess

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 June 2004 21:52 (nineteen years ago) link

18. Squarepusher, Feed Me Weird Things
17. Squarepusher, Hard Normal Daddy
16. Squarepusher, Music is One Rotted Note
15. Squarepusher, Selection Sixteen
14. Squarepusher, Go Plastic

I'm sure his other albums are equally bad, but these are the ones I've heard too much of.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 21:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Why, Ken? Those seem like totally sensible statements to make.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 June 2004 21:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Does anyone need more than one Basic Channel and Chain Reaction record?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 June 2004 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I swear I can't remember the last time I felt the need to listen to a record by the "Detroit Three".

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 June 2004 21:59 (nineteen years ago) link

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:02 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah i just couldnt remember how to spell it

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I think it's maybe a question of the whole Chain Reaction sound being overrated, but that can also be said of Kompakt, Warp, etc.

Hmmmm.....can the same be said of Mo'Wax? Or do they escape such scrutiny? UNKLE was/is certainly overrated.....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:03 (nineteen years ago) link

that 12 spot could be filled by casino versus japan!

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:04 (nineteen years ago) link

It's hard to hear Mo'Wax records through the hum of unbearable smugness they give off.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Ninja Tune is no better.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:05 (nineteen years ago) link

True.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:07 (nineteen years ago) link

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:08 (nineteen years ago) link

pole - 1
warp: 1992-present

Them's fighting words.

Also, Come With Us is genius. And while Geogaddi may be better, MHTRTC is also essential. It's not just about "Roygbiv". I mean "Turquoise Hexagon Sun", "Kaini Industries", "Happy Cycling", "Aquarius", . . .

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:08 (nineteen years ago) link

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Although the rare 12" MOW remix of his balls is classic.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Am I at all right in guessing that not-dancefloor-oriented = overrated for some posters?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:10 (nineteen years ago) link

No, no. Judges also overrule any appearance by "Dead Cities" on this list.....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:10 (nineteen years ago) link

She's a naive Catholic school girl, man, give her a break.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:13 (nineteen years ago) link

That was premature.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 3 June 2004 22:13 (nineteen years ago) link
