i'm guessing nick is referring to how watkins was able to convince the mother to permit the abuse, wrt to fame and fandom

again though the idea of a parent offering their kids up for sexual abuse seems to really be on an abstract level of unpleasantness that 'fame' isn't going to adequately explain
― screaming lord, such opinion (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 16:12 (ten years ago) link
everything about this is so far through the wall of fucked-up that i can't even
― space bl00ps (NickB), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 16:14 (ten years ago) link
I don't think there are any lessons to be drawn here re: fame. There are plenty of non-famous paedophiles exerting similar control over victims and accomplices. It's just a staggering case. I can't get beyond holy fuck.

a charismatic manipulator whose fame (such as it was) gave extra opportunities to indulge his whims? AKA a fuckin' douchebag

Never having heard a LProphets record, I'm assuming it's some sort of 'U2-lite' rocky type of thing, somewhere between Muse and Stereophonics, right?
Obviously I'm not going to now. I have sympathy for fans of the band, and the rest of the band themselves. Presumably they'va all got themselves other music jobs by now, being good musicians, right?
― Mark G, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 16:21 (ten years ago) link
They're just a really shitty band.
― afriendlypioneer, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 16:22 (ten years ago) link
Nondescript.
more a Brit nu-metal/emo and bloody awful at that, depraved lead singer notwithstanding

I'm sure.
But what was their perceived MO? Their 'mission statement' ? (In a nutshell, obv)
― Mark G, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 16:23 (ten years ago) link
that was xposted, obv, too.

the prison service have to ensure his safety so he's probably going to be the most heavily segregated non-lethal detainee in the country

There must be a hell of a lot of people out there with Lostprophets tattoos now frantically booking laser removal treatments.

But what was their perceived MO?
the skinny on them when i was at Kerrang! was that they were essentially a rock band in name but more closely resembled a boy band in operation
― the "Weird Al" Yankovic of country music (stevie), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 16:28 (ten years ago) link
have never knowingly heard a note of their music tbh
"Fake Sound of Progress" was a Steve "Lammo" Lamacq fave back in the day, no doubt he's currently burning a Lostprophets t-shirt

Idk Nakh, protective custody is all very well and good but it tends to work best when none of the other inmates are actually certain what the vulnerable inmates are in for. No chance of that here, every Cat A and B prisoner in the country is going to be waiting to see where this excrescence shows up.
Obviously he'll be very heavily protected but this is just such a visceral case. Remains to be seen how much cover the prison staff will actually offer him.
Tbh the women are probably gonna have it as bad, if not worse. Can't be many worse places to be than a high Category prison if you're a mother who's allowed your baby to be used as a sex toy.
― Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 16:52 (ten years ago) link
this is a strange sort of natural justice vs categorical imperative thing where it is vitally important that he is granted as a great a duty of care as possible but if somehow he did end up like this then nobody would give a shit

then you read some of the stuff so fuck knows how bad the stuff is they cant report.

Mostly otm rage, a few despairing attacks on British penal policy. Nothing that really feels disproportionate. Watkins has surely claimed Worst Human Of 2013

tbh the thought of likely violent outcomes for Watkins just makes me feel sadder still. i understand people's need to vent in these circumstances, but this sickness doesn't need a ceremonial sacrifice to underlie it. let him live with the life he's made for myself and let him confront it every day.

aiui those groupies were providing the guy with access to their infants? or were there other groupies involved? i don't really want to know tbh, wasn't reading the details too closely

he shagged some 16-year-old girls, assume no infants involved at that point. but who tf knows.

there were underage groupies (16 yr olds) and then there were these first round elimination mother of the year candidates discussed in the trial.
