2. Corrupted - Garten Der Unbewusstheit (1,599 Points, 40 Votes, 4 #1s)
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JoH71r1ndKQ/Tt-jc5nQOCI/AAAAAAAACY8/YYpfY2b6RFY/s1600/Corrupted%2B-%2BGarten%2BDer%2BUnbewusstheit.png
http://www.last.fm/music/Corrupted

Corrupted is a Japanese drone/sludge/doom metal band, formed in 1994. Their sound is characterized by incredibly downtuned guitars and bass playing slow, minimalist riffs under deep layers of feedback. The vocals are harsh guttural grunts, and the music alternates between long instrumental sections and sections with vocals which go for long periods of time without rest. They are considered by most familiar with the genre to be one of the heaviest and darkest doom metal bands of all. However, they sometimes have long acoustic sections, spoken-word interludes, and other breaks in the style, even other instruments, as on their album El Mundo Frio, a 71-minute song which contains long sections of harp. To this effect, they recently added a keyboardist, Takehito Miyagi, to their lineup, which had previously consisted only of guitar, bass, drums, and vocals.

Corrupted has a few notable idiosyncrasies which seem to create an air of mystery around the band. Although they hail from Japan, and their members on most releases are all Japanese, they sing almost exclusively in Spanish, though some songs contain sections in Japanese or English. In addition, the band has never taken promotional pictures nor do any of the albums contain group photos. The only known existing photographs are taken by fans at concerts, and they refuse to give interviews.

Corrupted’s albums typically contain extensive liner notes in the form of bleak black-and-white photographs, which add to the gloomy atmosphere of the music.

Much of Corrupted’s discography is on split albums, often with grindcore bands. The band is known for its ability to produce songs of almost any length; their longest song El Mundo is substantially longer than an hour, while their shortest song, an untitled track recorded for a homeless benefit compilation, lasts less than two minutes.

2. Corrupted is an Irish death/thrash metal band.

“Formed in 1999, Corrupted have been a regular feature of the metal gig itinerary up and down Ireland ever since. Fusing melodic heavy metal in the Swedish style with the weight and groove of Pantera, Obituary and Fear Factory, these guys have the potential to gain a lot of fans in this country. Their debut demo CD “Feed on the Weak” is an impressive stab at conveying the bands live power - though not perfect, it showcases very tight playing and a knack for solid songwriting. Tracks like Goregasm really shine out and are destined to do them big favours as they continue their trawl in search of label interest. Frequently cited as being a fantastic live proposition, the bands energy and professional approach are to be commended - from the pro packaged cd, the substantial web site and to the nice line in tshirts, this band is another putting their money where their mouths are.”

http://www.doommantia.com/2011/11/corrupted-garten-der-unbewusstheit.html

Corrupted the Osaka funeral doom, sludge, drone noise death machine, one of the hardest working bands on the planet with 7 Ep's (maybe more-lost count), 14 spilt albums (again, maybe more), and 6 full length albums. The band that refused to be photographed or interviewed, although I think they might have changed these days and the band that are Japanese, yet sing in Spanish, English, German as well as Japanese have a new album out and is another monster release. Right off the bat, I can say if you have never liked the band in the past, STOP reading now, this album won't changed your opinion. This is the kind of release that is either brilliant or about as enjoyable as slamming your balls in a car-door depending your own personal taste in music. Corrupted have built up a reputation as being one of the most challenging bands to listen to in the doom scene and with good reason and 'Garten Der Unbewusstheit' does nothing to change that.

The band is famous for writing long pieces of crushing doom that requires a threshold of patience that is beyond most people and this album is another demanding listening experience for the listener. Even though it has 3 songs on the album, it might as well be one 71 minute track. Two of these three tracks are both around the 30 minute mark and each track seems to bleed into each other so it seems like one long punishing epic.

This album sounds like a more melancholic Corrupted this time around with more of a post-rock vibe about it but it is still mostly total doom. The band uses a lot of drone techniques, sludge, and passages of funeral doom but there is also moments where they step back from that with passages of simple ambience. The album is challenging and equally as challenging, for me the reviewer to describe it but I will give it a shot.

The album opens with 'Garten' that begins with a gentle guitar before a bass drum signals it is time for all hell to break loose. As this 30 minute track progresses, you get funeral doom riffing that is bleak and crushing but sparsely drawn out. This band knows how to bleed an idea to death but while it is so slow in building, the track is so hypnotic you don't really notice that it is not doing much really. This is the beauty and the skill of the band; they can make something intriguing without really doing much at all. 'Garten' is emotionally draining and all about the philosophical state of self-awareness. The state of shyness and paranoia, this all comes crashing through in the music and the atmosphere which is absolutely haunting. The vocals have always been the bands downfall in my opinion and on this album, it is again the weak point. The low growls that sit on top of the mix don't change at all throughout the album and they do get tedious after the first 30 minute track.

What is creepy about this opening track is it is simple yet so perfectly executed, you are drawn into the captivating power of it all. The music resonant's and breathes and even the heavily distorted guitar passages seem oddly gorgeous. The song is broken up into various movements that flow incredibly well but the extra long-playing time of the track is still a challenging task that only the more extreme doom listener will most likely endure. There is an interlude, 'Against The Darkest Days' that is pretty forgettable but I think that is only because of the two monster tracks that it is sandwiched between. After the soft acoustics fade, it leads into another 30 minute piece, 'Gekkou No Daichi' and this track is even more atmospheric than the opening track. There is more funeral-like doom, ambient sections, and hulking, grand passages. This is truly a track you can find yourself lost in and while many will be scared off by the 30 minute running-time, the truth is it always seem shorter than what it actually is.

If there is s problem with 'Gekkou No Daichi' it is it doesn't really give the listener anything really different than what has already been heard on the opening 30 minutes of 'Garten.' Luckily, the music is so captivating you find yourself lost within the music anyway so slow-yes but always interesting and totally captivating. The two epics on this album have builds galore and are constantly moving in intensity but the album as a whole is persecutory in nature and kind of schizo. The music is harsh yet has an underlying beauty about it that is hard to describe but incredibly moving to listen to. 'Garten Der Unbewusstheit' is another triumph for Corrupted that wont be to everyone's tastes but if you truly appreciate doomed despondency, you will find this album a caprivating, emotional experience.......8.5/10.

1. Hammers of Misfortune - 17th Street (1,601 Points, 39 Votes, 5 #1s)

The eclectic and versatile guitarist John Cobbett (Gwar, Ludicra, Slough Feg, Amber Asylum, Jarboe) from San Francisco gave birth in 2000 to HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE, previously known as UNHOLY CADAVER.

Review

by James Christopher Monger

Bay Area progressive metal outfit Hammers of Misfortune's fifth outing brings to mind classic Deep Purple, Queen, and Judas Priest as filtered through Dream Theater's kaleidoscopic art rock lens. Led by guitarist/lyricist John Cobbett, 17th Street juggles power metal clichés, classic rock melodies, and doom metal breakdowns with equal aplomb, managing to circumvent any kind of eye rolling through sheer determination and earnestness. Key cuts include the weary, vaudevillian “The Day the City Died” and the blistering title track, the latter of which opens with a pair of crucial duel leads before launching into a brutish mix of Queens of the Stone Age and "Starship Troopers"-era Yes. Eclectic? Absolutely, but it never feels contrived, and when all of the disparate parts successfully align, as they do on the breathtaking Big Country-meets-Iron Maiden-inspired single “The Grain,” it’s like randomly spinning the dial on the radio and landing on your favorite song.

An album like this can easily be experienced with the same emotion that fuels you when you watch a magnificent, soaring landscape. Or a beautiful painting by an artist you admire.

Yes, I realize this sounds big and gushing but I think, with some amount of confidence, that when music is in the field of what Hammers Of Misfortune play and loaded with so much love and grandiosity, it reaches the same level of greatness than art.

Hammers Of Misfortune always played Heavy Metal in its purest incarnation. The metal that you could find in old vinyl collected with care and inherited from a wiser brother. Or the heavier Hard Rock classics. Stuff like early Maiden, Dio-era Black Sabbath, Judas Priest but als Thin Lizzy, early Rush, even the more operatic incarnations of Queen. That might not be everyone's cup of tea, but to be honest, it should be, especially when the band delivers with as much passion as you can hear in this record. In the past, including on their cult-worthy release “The Locust Years”, I always thought they had heart and some sort of magic but lacked restraint. And yet, on “17th Street”, the band created the by the ever-so-excellent Joh Cobett, whose Slough Feg are a blessing from heaven, uses that love for no holds barred epicness, theatrical heaviness and larger than life songs to reach a place that has been abandoned by more well-known bands.

It's a powerful, galloping, epic album. Even when the songs take a break and go into moodier territories, they're still all about the grandiosity and the power of rock. The keyboards, the queen-esque guitars, Joe Hutton's leading vocals (that remind me of David Byron at his most evocative), the moments of over the top theatricality all work together to make an album that isn't even remotely concerned with being “different” or “restrained” but goes for the heart and guts. Whether its with hair-raising epics like “The Grain” or the beautiful, purely 70's prog-ballad “Summer Tears” (a song that sounds like it came out from a time machine), I didn't have a second of boredom. The whole album is played great, produced like it should be (with a lovingly warm and analogic sound), soaring and glorious and at times just right to cruise a road feeling great about life. This is heavy music for the soul...9/10.

My thoughts on Hammers Of Misfortune, from the blog:

I’m a fan of Hammers’ band-leader John Cobbett. Whether working with Hammers, The Lord Weird Slough Feg or Ludicra, his guitar style and undeniable mastery of the riff from hell shine through. With his focus now solely and strongly on this version of Hammers Of Misfortune, he’s crafted his masterpiece. 17th Street is an amazing listen from front to back, and, in this era of red-lined ear fatiguing mixes, an absolute pleasure to listen to regardless of the playback medium (though I’m partial to cranked in the car, because I can sing along and play steering wheel drums). I remember fondly when metal was a broad, nearly template free music whose one criteria for greatness was rocking the fuck out, and this record rocks the fuck out like the best of the best. “The Grain”, is by far my song of the year. An instant all-time classic on on album chock full of songs nearly as good.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 20 January 2012 22:16 (twelve years ago) link

I deliberately placed Uncle Acid low because (as I said upthread) I don't think it's metal but not enough to raise it a position. Would have been gutted Corrupted missed out by two points had my voting not been what it was.

Actually, surprised this means Amebix didn't place at all.

Speaking as someone who had only heard one of the 125 albums listed and had only even heard of 5 or 6 of the artists at all this whole thread has been both hugely enjoyable and informative. Never would I have suspected that I dug so much metal.

Big ups to everyone who voted as well. Great job one and all.
