BTW this is the single worst piece of criticism written by anyone anywhere, and when I read it I was already thinking "Christ, fuck U2" after Rattle and Hum came out and then I read this and figured I need not trust Robert Hilburn, who I had only just learned about, on anything for the future. In retrospect this was one of the smartest decisions I've ever made.

okay even at the time this is like the dumbest possible thing anyone could say about U2; the fact that the next thing U2 released was Achtung, Baby just makes it worse

Oh I forgot -- best detail is that in the original print run of that piece when I read it, it was accompanied by a black and white line drawing showing Bono standing at the fork in the road on a desert highway or something, himself split in two as he deeply pondered on WHICH WAY HE SHOULD TAKE OH THE ART.

also can I just point out that invoking "stylistic" as a defense for one form of terrible, terrible singing over the other essentially says "I have no defensible argument, I just like one more than the other"

nah i disagree with that, grunge specifically presented the singer as some sort of auteur, and lots of people hold up people like eddie vedder as great technical singers - nobody is saying that about henry rollins.

also there isnt really a punk vocal style per se, unless you wanna get into intangibles like snarl or attitude or fake englishmen or some other such bullshit - but grunge does have this sorta central baritone except when they try to hit notes they cant chewy sorta character to it

no one on Earth who has any conception of how singing works thinks any of the grunge singers are great technical singers

some of them had very strong senses of pitch (hi dere Kurt Cobain) but the early 00s spawn they inspired (aside from dude in Staind) are all actually much better singers, like for example I'm never going to by a Chad Kroger/Nickelback CD but I am fully prepared to say he's a better singer than any of the grunge heyday folks except possibly the dudes in Alice In Chains (whom I only caveat because I only know one song of theirs that I haven't heard in literally a decade)
