giant bomb was never going to like it

ah giant bomb, or as a friend called it, "that old men sighing channel"

The red flag for me is that even the wildly positive reviews have some serious (or at least alarming) contradictions. "Is it fun? Well, no, but ..." "It takes about 20 hours before you finally ... " "It's like if Breath of the Wild were boring on purpose," and so on. Honestly, from what I've seen or read of it it doesn't even look that weird, imo, by video game standards, and all the actors/celebrity cameos seem ... distracting. Plus, it appears very long stretches of the game (most of it?) are about balancing a bunch of stuff on your back while you traverse rough terrain, soothing your upset baby and repairing your shoes.

Which is a way of saying I look forward to hearing what some of you think of it.

See, that Giant Bomb pan is more or less identical to even the raves.

happy #DeathStranding Day! many reviews (including my own) mention QWOP and Getting Over It. well, i went the extra mile and invited @bfod into the @Kotaku Goblin Bunker to play Death Stranding. i will give no instructions. let's get gobblin' in the bunker https://t.co/y1ykhIJsBK pic.twitter.com/SFM8ZzmyKY

Early returns from players seem generally positive, though with strong caveats: https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/dtl81q/so_for_those_who_have_a_few_hours_in_death/

I watched somebody play this today at my local gaming emporium. It looked pretty weird! Your character’s legs in particular are like super-bulbous. You’re like an astronaut on earth.

polygon likes death stranding enough to call it the 53rd best game of the decade

game fun

adam, Saturday, 9 November 2019 11:51 (four years ago) link

i played for four+ hours last night and i didn't kill anyone. it didn't even come up. how often do you see that in gazillion-dollar non-nintendo games?

esp compared to the frankly unpleasant grand guignol opening of mgs5

adam, Saturday, 9 November 2019 11:55 (four years ago) link

sports and racing games but yeah i get what you're saying

ciderpress, Saturday, 9 November 2019 14:40 (four years ago) link

Obviously there is plenty of "killing" in Nintendo games, there's just a notable lack of blood, a la a lot of Marvel movies.

Man, somewhere I saw a recommendation of "The Evil Within," so I watched a bit of the opening, and it's literally like watching a torture porn movie, and I thought to myself, man, who wants to play this shit?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 9 November 2019 15:12 (four years ago) link

based on what i've read of death stranding it's v hard to believe i'll enjoy it (so many "yes it's a walking simulator but a good one" comments) but i'm still curious. maybe it'll be $15 one day soon.

Mordy, Saturday, 9 November 2019 15:23 (four years ago) link

I’ll maybe start a thread later when I’m feeling less lazy

I have spent a considerable amount of time in the game now, and killing people has yet to really be a thing.

I did spend a fair amount of time deviating from the main quests to steal a truck, load it with all the materials I could find, and reconstruct a large segment of road. I think reviewers may have underestimated the number of signs and likes you could receive from other players, because my status level jumped a ton during the day as things I constructed showed up in other games and were well-received

mh, Sunday, 10 November 2019 13:53 (four years ago) link

i did tie a mule dude up with a strand while i ransacked his lair.

upgrading from fun to owns. smashing that like button.

adam, Sunday, 10 November 2019 14:16 (four years ago) link

xpost I'm confused about the online element. Just about every review I have read has said you don't need online access to play the game, but that sounds like an important part of the gameplay.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 10 November 2019 14:33 (four years ago) link

It’d be a different experience, but you could definitely go it alone.

I regret to inform everyone I have found the Conan O’Brien character

mh, Sunday, 10 November 2019 17:48 (four years ago) link

But if the interactive (with other players) aspect helps you level up or gain status, is that symbolic or does that actually affect gameplay?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 10 November 2019 19:16 (four years ago) link

Looking at Spidey and DQXI.

Antonym Scalia (Leee), Sunday, 10 November 2019 19:58 (four years ago) link

$15 Resident Evil 2 is pretty good.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 10 November 2019 20:39 (four years ago) link

If I didn't have the system, slim with God of War, Last of Us and Horizon Zero Dawn for $200 ...

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 10 November 2019 20:41 (four years ago) link

i mean its the end of the gen everything's gonna be cheap

ciderpress, Sunday, 10 November 2019 21:05 (four years ago) link

wait until you see what a slim costs after the ps5 comes out next year

ciderpress, Sunday, 10 November 2019 21:06 (four years ago) link

def a good time to be a cheap gamer. you could easily load up enough games for the next year this month

gbx, Sunday, 10 November 2019 22:36 (four years ago) link

So uhhhh, Death Stranding. Been playing it all day and I feel like I’ve just gotten the tip of the iceberg as far as mechanics go, but it’s actually pretty cool? Less of a chore (right now anyway) than videos/reviews would have you believe. Grabbed me straight away.

*minor early game spoiler*

Your first real mission is carrying your mother’s corpse on your back to an incinerator. Sold me right there.

My belated dive into "Alien: Isolation" is still proving too intense to play for prolonged periods of time, but once the alien starts finding and killing you it, and once you realize there is no avoiding that, the game (ironically) loses some of its edge (in a good way) and becomes a little less stressful. My favorite aspects of it so far may be standard video game tropes. For example, stealth-mode is essentially just crouching, which is hilarious (tho alien less prone to fall for that than people or androids). I also find it funny how you run and hide in a locker or whatever and patiently hold your breath to avoid detection, but as soon the danger has (seemingly) passed and you leave, the animation has you burst out as violently and loudly as possible. Like, come on, Ripley, use a lighter touch, there are baddies looking for you!

If it's less than $15 I might consider buying this again when it finally comes out for the Switch.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 17 November 2019 15:08 (four years ago) link

I've always been a fan of the generative ambient PS4 background music. Today I finally got around to backing the machine up, which of course takes hours, and the entire time that ambient music has just been floating around just out of earshot. But every once and a while I stop what I'm doing and suddenly notice it again. Full Eno.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 19 November 2019 19:52 (four years ago) link

With a couple of exceptions, most black friday prices seem to be the same across the board, whether best buy, amazon, playstation store, etc. I guess that's good, right? Resident Evil 2 seems $5 cheaper for the physical version, but I think I've been converted to digital only, if possible.

A couple of titles I've been looking forward to, like Control and Concrete Genie and MediEvil (which got mixed at best reviews on release but I think might have improved with some patches?), I have a hunch they'll be a lot cheaper not far down the line.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 24 November 2019 17:22 (four years ago) link

I've seen a difference of $5 for some titles (Control being one).

Question about Dragon Quest 11: apparently some people find the MIDI score about and have suggested getting the Definitive Edition on Switch. I don't really plan on getting a Switch, but is it bad enough to make getting a whole other system more worthwhile?

Antonym Scalia (Leee), Sunday, 24 November 2019 17:30 (four years ago) link

there are a million other reasons to own a Switch besides that one! but yeah, it sounds like the benefits are way better - 16-bit mode, fully orchestrated score, extra content iirc

Nhex, Sunday, 24 November 2019 17:52 (four years ago) link

i don't think any of the switch additions are crucial, for japan the biggest one is voice acting but the PS4 version already had english voices. the soundtrack is a weak point regardless of whether it's recorded or synthesized. the 16-bit mode is more of a novelty than good content

ciderpress, Sunday, 24 November 2019 18:53 (four years ago) link

also you're obviously getting all that stuff in exchange for a graphics downgrade on switch

ciderpress, Sunday, 24 November 2019 18:55 (four years ago) link

DQ11 soundtrack is OK, only egregious one is the field music which can be changed to the DQ8 field music on Switch. The graphics really aren't that much downgraded imo, the artstyle helps a lot with that.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Sunday, 24 November 2019 19:54 (four years ago) link

I took advantage of the current sales to replace a couple of my physical copies with deep-discount digital copies, then put my physicals up for sale to cover the cost. Nice way to reduce the clutter. So many A+/AAA games for $10 ...

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 30 November 2019 14:40 (four years ago) link

I know! A lot of good $15/$20/$25 physical titles too. I'm guessing some of these might get ported to next gen, as well, so I'm trying to limit myself a bit...

Nhex, Saturday, 30 November 2019 17:02 (four years ago) link

Ha yeah I still have a stack of 360 games from the end of that gen. Gonna play mass effect 2 at some point... (right?)
